I really had a good time slowing walking the aisles identify items and see how much they were. There are two major supermarket chains in New Zealand: Foodstuffs (New World, Pak'n'Save, FourSquare) and Woolworths (Countdown). This was the second grocery store we visited on our cruise tour through NZ, and this one was significantly bigger. It pretty much had every item a traveler or local would need, and the prices were comparable to US prices (once accounting for the currency exchange). There were also quite a few Asian specific items, ones that I would only find in an Asian grocery store in the states. My brother was searching for very high UMF Honey and he found the place where it would be...but they were sold out. One thing to note was that they clearly kept their eggs in the unrefrigerated section.
What can I say more than a good sized supermarket, well stocked with both regional and…read moreinternational products; it seemed a little pricer than further out of Welly but to be expected for the city I guess. A great, wide range of produce.

Looking for some late snacks, I found New World Metro. It is a large urban grocery store with most…read moreeverything you might need if you're living in an apartment or AirBNB in Central Wellington. Kitchenware, pet food, pots and pans and cutlery and yes, lots of food items. The wine and beer section is large. This is also a location where you can add value to your Snapper card but you'll need to do that with a cashier. [Review 491 of 2024 - 140 in New Zealand - 21523 overall]

The sushi was fresh made that day and tasted great and a very good price. We also had smoked salmon, there was a big selection of flavors as well as hummus - also a big selection of flavors. The only improvement would be a larger produce section including greens such as spinach or mixed lettuce ready to eat.

Inside, bakery, prepared sandwiches and salads and lots of ready-to-eat stuff. Beyong that, pretty much a full grocery. Self-checkout worked quite well and I was able to put my stuff in my backpack and not buy another reusable shopping bag. [Review 455 of 2024 - 106 in New Zealand - 21488 overall]

So the time I saved in checkout was more than spent wandering around the store looking for what I wanted. But overall a great place to pick up minor items like bottled water and snacks.

I bought some groceries for use while I was in Wellington, and also stocked up on the NZ-produced vegan butterscotch and caramel sauces to take home. I'm also now a huge fan of Stir (a NZ brand) instant almond milk turmeric chai. The owner was super friendly and even recommended that I check out the "Vegan Vault" evening market -- he annotated a map for me and sent me on my way and I was so happy to get that recommendation (see other Yelp review!). Keep up the good work!
