There are a couple of things which stop The Old Brown Jug from being my local... firstly, the…read morelocation... it's not local to me which doesn't help as it means I have to drive there (a great opportunity to mention the ample parking outside). Secondly, the price. The Old Brown Jug is a bit more expensive than you're average pub. I view it as a place I go to as a treat or as a one off rather than a regular place otherwise you would just be skint all the time. One thing which does take me there is the great selection of drinks on offer. The pub has a number of continental beers such as my favourite Erdinger and also has a range of real ales and ciders. Thursday night is cheap cider night so a good chance to get along and test out some new brews!! The pub itself is very spacious with rustic wooden floors and a homely feel. The garden out the back is huge with plenty of seating and is covered by parasols and heaters meaning you can stay relatively dry if the weather takes a turn for the worse. A top pub in the Stoke area and well worth checking out.

Small, quaint pub near the end of Newcastle City Centre so can be easily missed at times. One quite interesting attraction to the Jug is all the live music/salsa/acoustic nights they host. Student friendly, worth a visit or two.

The theatre itself is nothing to write home about exactly (my mind probably clouded by being a student there and spending hours in the bloody place once upon a time ago), but when you go to a cinema, it's much the same thing you expect - some seats and a big screen. The choice of films here is where it stands out. It screens independent and foreign films, which makes it unique in Stoke. Rarely will a film play at the film theatre that has ever played theatrically anywhere else in Stoke. However, the films are often screened several months after their general release, and sometimes even after they're already out on DVD.

Located at the front of Staffordshire University, this cinema is Stoke-on-Trent's only venue which…read moreshows independent, art-house and foreign films. Only one screen though and the seating area is basic, not a lot of leg room. Unfortunately with it being used for lectures most of the time, film screenings are rare with only a handful a week and only a couple of films are screened every couple of weeks - choice is limited and can be a bit slow getting new releases on the screen but the place should be celebrated for continuing to bring the alternative film scene to Stoke as without we wouldn't get to see art-house, foreign and indie films on the big screen locally. The volunteers are helpful and friendly and the pre-screening bar is very cheap.

Apart from peak times, its £5 a film across the board, which is unbeatable value really. If you want to dress up and make an evening out or go on a date, the Cineworld in Hanley or Vue in Newcastle are better options but will cost you more. It has its place.

The…read morestaff were always so disinterested and unhelpful, and I can understand why, in a way - as to care about the job there would've been a mountain of stress. The cinema is situated pretty much next to a bowling alley complex, and both of them have arcade games and whatnot. Naturally, this attracts a bunch of idiot teenagers. And when they're maxed out on games, their favourite activity seems to be going into the cinema screens in huge groups and disrupting films for paying customers. I had several film experiences ruined at the Odeon because of this. I'm sure I was not the only one, and the strain of it likely just caused the staff to stop caring. But either way, it's not a pleasant viewing experience for a customer. Buying food and drink there is also ill-advised as it's the usual cinema rip-off. Festival Park does have several restaurants though, so I recommend going to one of those before or after your film. And good luck getting through the film without the worst of Stoke's teens making a nuisane of themselves.
