Great fire!
Jack D.

First things first, New Sydney Hotel might be the best pub in Australia. Big call? Possibly. True? Yes. On a recent trip to Hobart I asked the wise barkeep at Lark Distillery "where's a good pub with a cosy fireplace?" He responded without hesitation "New Sydney Hotel. It's a country pub in the middle of the city." He's not wrong. On a Saturday afternoon we nabbed a seat at the bar with our backs to the fireplace and were left stunned by the incredible beer on offer - from all over Australia and the world, there were craft beers left, right and centre. Pirate Life, Fuggled Porter, Bruny Island Beer and of course, endless Guinness. Not interested in beer? You could ry one of their mulled ciders or wine, or sink a cherry cider (I did and it was delicious.) The real highlight though was the Irish Jam Session that unfolded before our eyes. One by one more and more Irish instrument lovers came and sat down with a large group of other like-minded musicians and just... jammed. The result was a 15-piece band simply playing joyous Irish music. This happens every Saturday afternoon - it is simply too good to miss. It felt a bit like I was in Ireland and I absolutely loved it. Take me back there ASAP.

Tapas lunch menu

We visited in the middle of May 2016. They had a roaring fire which was beautiful! There were 4 of us here. We ordered off the normal lunch meals and tapas menu. The fish and chips was apparently delicious and came with a gorgeous little bottle of malt vinegar. The tapas dishes we tried were the croquettes, beef brisket and fried chicken. All were pretty nice. Tassie has some amazing food and produce and this place really showed it off. Doesn't look like much from outside but it's great spot to visit if you're in Hobart.

The rooftop makes an accurate pitch to guests at the nearby Mid City Hotel.

If you're after a friendly pub with a warm open fireplace on a cold night, look no further. Particularly recommended to travellers who might be on their own in Hobart for the night and looking for somewhere they can get a good meal, something interesting to drink and the chance of decent conversation while seated at the bar, spliced with taking in some great live music. The pub has plenty of character - enough that I was willing to overlook the few 'Irish' touches - a good range of beers and ciders on tap and a vast array of local Tasmanian whiskeys and spirits. On the chilly night I was there they were also selling mulled, spiced wine. The menu is a great mix of pub standards (chicken parmigiana, fish and chips, steaks) with some pretty fancy-looking fare thrown in as well, from what I could see coming out of the kitchen to other diners. It seems to attract a lot of locals, whom the staff know by name and drink, as well as the odd blow-in such as myself, attracted by the sound of the band playing behind its non-descript facade and the whiff of smoke from the chimney. Highly recommended.

The New Sydney Hotel is one of Hobart's classic pubs. Friendly and warm, great service, large selection of beers and fantastic pub meals.

Food and service both awesome. Cold night in Hobart and the open fire hit the spot. Will be back for sure!

The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

The raclette was delicious and a generous portion of melted and crispy raclette cheese and prosciutto over potatoes with a bit of salad for $15. There is a huge selection of spirits though we had a nice bottle of Cabernet which was also good value.

On my first visit to Australia, I took a side trip to Hobart. I arrived on the island just before…read moresunset and it was dark by the time I checked into my hotel. I didn't do a lot of research about eateries prior to visiting to Hobart. Instead, I decided to walk around the area and see which places piqued my interest. Walked over to Salamanca Place as there are plenty of restaurants in this area. Along the way I stumbled across Waterman's on my walk through the neighborhood. I was looking for a low-key spot and this fit the bill, so I decided to give a try. Waterman's is a beer bar/pub specializing in craft and small batch brews. Particularly of interest for me were the Tasmanian beer offerings here. The location itself is appealing as it is in an old sandstone building so the interior has a history behind it. The layout of the place consists of a main bar area in which you order your beers and food from. As for seating, there are numerous seating booths here with a wall installation illuminating light. The beers on offer are posted on a board above the bar. There is a nice array of different types of beers to choose from here. You can find the list of what is available currently on their website. In general, beer seems to be a bit more pricey in Australia and this is no different here. Though I like that they offer a smaller size than the standard pint. This is good as it allows you to try more than one beer at a time here. In addition to their beers, the pub has a food menu which includes pizza, schnitzel, brats and pub entrees (Australian name for appetizers). For dinner here, I decided to get a Bah Bah pizza ($15.90) and paired it with a 10 ounce Van Dieman Stout ($8). The stout is a dark brew and it was on the bitter side. More so than I was expecting. But fortunately the pizza helped to cope with the bitterness. The pizza portion size was huge and filling. And it had an interesting combination of ingredients including slow cooked lamb, dukkah, roasted pumpkin and feta. The lamb was tasty and had a sausage like texture. As a whole, the flavors of the pizza really go well together. Dukkah is something I have never seen before on a menu. Turns out it is a spice mix which reminds me of spices like cumin and turmeric. If you like Mediterranean food, I think you will enjoy this as it is like eating a pizza version of a gyro. If you are looking to try out different varieties of Tasmanian beers in one place while in Hobart, Waterman's is a good place to check out. I recommend getting one of the pizzas here to pair with the beer as they are sizable and delicious.

This place is just up the street from the open air market they have, so it was the perfect spot. There is both an inside area and an outside area in the back. They have plenty of games to play and a lively atmosphere, but perhaps the best treat is that men's urinals are built into a wall with one-way mirrors, so you can actually see the folks in the outside area and enjoy them having a beer right across from where you are standing. That alone was worth the price of the beer!

The salad particularly tasted good after a long couple of days off traveling. Overall the food was decent but nothing all that special or memorable. For a place in Salamanca, this was a poor experience and we will not be returning, how they're in business I have no idea.

Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.
