This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

I had the black pudding stack for starters and then the smoked haddock poached in milk. Both were very good. The black pudding was perfectly cooked with the bacon. The mustard sauce was a little overpowering but didn't spoil it. The smoked haddock was perfect, nice and light and just what I needed for a post New Year lunch. My father enjoyed his steak and ale pie which had huge chunks of steak and looked home made. My mum really enjoyed her Minestrone soup which again looked freshly made. There's a separate bar area which is child free so if you want a quiet meal go there. The only down side is they only had one real ale on tap. However it was very well kept Black Sheep so I'm not complaining.

The main bar downstairs is separated from the restaurant upstairs with a spiral staircase which is always a nice touch (though after a few drinks might pose a tricky descent!). Service was swift and with a smile, from memory there were a couple of ales on tap but it was mainly more commercial lagers and cider. As I'd enjoyed it earlier I went for another pint of Landlord. They also have a large selection of wines on their list. It was a vibrant place to finish off an evening out in Sowerby Bridge. If I get chance I'd like to try their food and update this accordingly.

Love the food, and the feel of the place - if it was in London, people would rave about it…read more We usually just eat downstairs, which is perfect for us - dog friendly, child friendly, wallet friendly specials I believe are 5-7pm (M-F) - I usually get 2 x pizzas for £10 - and if you want to take them out, they'll box them up too - cheaper than the local pizza takeaways (and nicer!!)
