There is also a much older, but historic, building known as Carondelet Center. The Village is a wonderful residential facility for older folks and is not necessarily a nursing home but there are nursing facilities. Explaining this is by offering different levels of housing from no care needed apartments, memory care and assisted living. Amazingly good food in the terrace main dining room. Decorated like a high level restaurant the food is top notch. You can't walk in off the street and dine but need to be the guest of a resident. There are other dining options for residents as well. There are daily activities including a pool, gym, classes on just about everything artistic and holistic, a library, music shows, movies. Visiting a resident I found it very quiet. There is a long waiting list, so long they even have listing closed for now as the wait is in years not months.

The employees I feel so little things for the individuals they serve to make sure they are treated with dignity and respect. Joy is the head nurse and she also does a great job. It is about team building and making sure new ideas are brought up to make sure residents are loved and cared for. I am so glad my mother in law care coordinator recommend to check out Gracewood when I was told there might be an open bed. They are very much about team approach.

The staff is like a family who are looking out and always interested but also give mom respect and privacy. She has had a variety of ups and downs and everyone including the house manager, the nurse and the staff all are honest and kind with me to keep me informed and connected even when I can't be with Mom as much as I wish. All the staff seem to really like the residents and visit and chit chat when they can. I am so appreciative that I am never "nickel and dimed" for all the little things like someone helping Mom to get dressed sometimes or doing a quick coat of paint on her nails. The building smells good and is decorated for seasons and holidays. It is relatively small which we all like so that Mom can stay active and have some freedom even though her dementia is significant. Her geriatrician visited and made a house call and was very impressed at how well rooms and overall layout were designed to accommodate the needs of elderly and ability to integrate different levels of cognitive and physical abilities together. Check it out!

She was allowed to choose paint colors, the rent was affordable and the whole place had a very friendly home-like feel to it. She was very happy there. Last year the building was sold to Oppidan with Ebenezer as the property management company. It's like a nightmare. They raised her rent $120 a month and went from a yearly lease to month to month with the option to raise the rent any time they like. They are forcing her to move out of her apartment to temporary housing that doesn't even have a telephone so they can "renovate" and put in a lot of changes that she didn't ask for and doesn't want. All the while pretending like they are doing her some kind of favor. They refused to let her keep her wall colors, she has to be without telephone or internet for at least 3 weeks while still paying for the service, she has to pack up all her belongings and to access her car she has to walk to the garage which will be 2 buildings away from her. I warn anyone in the area that has an elderly relative to avoid facilities owned and managed by these people, they are heartless. My Mom was perfectly happy with her living situation the way it was and the only reason they are doing this is for the almighty dollar.

But after adding up all the costs of living in our home, the cost of living here was basically the same - except we get much more bang for the buck living here. Never underestimate how quickly basic living costs add up. There were a number of options for us when we decided to move from our home to a senior living apartment. Seven Hills had everything we were looking for and more. An urban environment, indoor heated parking, accessible facilities, exercise room, in unit washer and dryer, and full sized appliances were on our list. Some surprising amenities include meals prepared by a culinary school trained chef, a pub, a movie room, exercise classes private meeting/dining rooms, and library. We can arrange for apartment cleaning, nursing assistance and maintenance services as needed. Should one of us ever need assisted living, it can be provided to us in this same apartment. No need to uproot or live separately. The in-house activities have been a welcome relief during the pandemic. Movies, morning coffees, happy hours, trivia, book club, and exercise classes have all continued. People join in as much or as little as they choose. The attention by management and staff to COVID protocols has been outstanding. We've appreciated their open communication and response. As the MDH has changed requirements, the staff have instituted the recommendations immediately. Masks are worn in all common areas. Activities continue to be socially distanced. Numerous hand sanitizing stations are available throughout the building. We received COVID vaccinations in February and before that had regular COVID TESTING. The neighborhood is great. It is the home to families, restaurants, and small businesses. Mass transit is very convenient. The people who live here are friendly, intellectually active and interesting. People laugh often and don't waste time living in the past. There is no daily litany of aches and pains. The staff is very helpful and caring. They respond quickly to any request and have kept good humor throughout the pandemic. We love our home and community. It is really a great place to live.

When I was moving my mom's belongings out of her room, I discovered her room had a rodent infestation of enormous proportions. There was a solid sheet of droppings under the cushions of her couch. Most of the interior fabric was eaten away. There were droppings inside my mom's bed frame and along her headboard. The shelf of mom's closet was blanketed with droppings. The infestation created a serious health risk to my mom as well as the other residents. The Hantavirus is contracted through breathing air contaminated with rodent dropping. And it can be fatal. A few weeks after my mom had left, I received a letter from Marvella, informing me they would not be refunding my mom's damage deposit because they needed to replace the carpet in her room. Yes, there was a blood stain on the carpet from when my mom fell and hit her head. After realizing they were never going to clean up the pool of blood, I tried to wash it out of the carpet, but it did leave a stain. I find it ironic that Marvella had my mom living in the midst of a rodent infestation (including droppings in the carpet) but they chose to further punish my mom by keeping her damage deposit. She didn't tear the place up by hosting nightly keggars in her room. She's a 91 year old woman with advanced dementia who fell and hit her head. Does that sound like treatment she should receive from a nonprofit, Christian organization run by Presbyterian Homes?
