Parking was $25. PBR was over two hours of relentless, thrilling bull riding action. Awesome music was blasting the entire event. Not sure if the guy was a clown or just someone to keep the energy level up, but he kept that energy pumped. He also has (had) great dance moves. Bulls are beautiful, ginormous and oh so fast. I realized that riding a bull with one hand while keeping the other hand off the bull and your body is an amazing display of bravery and athletic skill. Wow...8 seconds can feel like a long time. I was pleasantly surprised and the PBR really went beyond what I thought it would be. I had a blast watching the bull riders. Something new I learned: The strap underneath a bull is not tied around the bull's testicles like I've heard for my entire life. The rope is meant to motivate the bull to kick more with its back legs while bucking, which really puts a rider's skills to the test in staying on.

It was not crowded and you could probably find good seats anywhere. It was a little confusing walking in, as we didn't buy tickets ahead of time and weren't told which gate was selling tickets (which meant getting in another line). Parking wasn't bad either. But, $7 for hot chocolate? Ridiculous (I just wish the home team fans wouldn't boo the away team- sets a bad example for the rest of us)

I don't feel there is enough variety of activities for the young professionals in Albuquerque. That said, if you want to get away from the gym, work, life stress, and spend time making friends in a boozy fraternity like atmosphere then this is the right scene for you. It's a great forum for meeting lots of people (if in kickball, it's mostly for drinking and less athletic, with dodgeball it's inverse to that), with a range of interests including drinking, hooking up, and being somewhat athletic (aka glory days). Kickball is great for fun times and making you curse more in a game than you have in a year when your 'fun' team gets crushed by the competitive teams. Dodgeball is crazy competitive and exhilarating in its own way...but the drinks don't flow as much, at least til after the games. Both these leagues, plus the others, reward membership with a T-shirt and 2 open bars (mid and end season parties). Overall for $70 it's a great way to get away to college life again, just be sure to keep your day to day on the DL. No ones got time for your adulting.

If you're part of the "in crowd" calls get made in your favor, and if you're a newbie team or a less than "elite" team, there's really nothing you can do about it. It's also pretty obvious that the league's leadership wants to be well liked by the cool kids because they simply pretend like none of this is going on and any feedback or constructive criticism of the structure falls on deaf ears. Kickball is fun, don't get me wrong, but way too many people in this league think it's all there is to life. You'll find out quickly enough just how awesome their mad kickball skills are because they will let you know constantly...even in the rec/beginner league. If you're looking for a fun, relaxed way to play with people who like kickball, but have a life outside of it...I'd look elsewhere. After more than 5 seasons, I'll be looking for a new league to play in and so will my team. :)

Albuquerque Florist showed their stuff, as did emcees Jackie, Tony, and Donny, who made the award introductions drunk-fun, without actual drunkenness (I think). Venue Sandia Casino stepped up in a great way, offering a slew of swag goodies, and even allowing south-sider nemesis Isleta steal the foodie show with their AMAZEBALLS culinary samples. Might sporting of you, Sandia! Clear demonstration of the real value of our uniquely marvelous community. This is to say nothing about the spas, and travel agents, and healthcare providers, and artisans, and salons, and all the other bada$$ Albuquerque businesses that earned their prestigious victories in AtM's Best of the City competition. A recent article in one our Weeklies featured the place, emphasizing that two Minnesotan transplants owned and operated the business. So let's put two and two together: I'm a Minnesota transplant, and one of my kids is named - you guessed it - Iris. And it happens to be right around the corner from our home. The article also mentioned that the neighborhood, Sawmill Village (if you haven't heard of it, don't worry), will see massive development over the coming year, including restaurants, shopping and (drooling here) breweries. Did you catch that? Brewery plural. Um... Yes, please. The reality of the area is far from an urban utopia, however. Iris is situated on a street that currently sees traffic in the form of cement trucks and tractors. The signage from Bellamah, the main artery nearby, consists of a little white placard with a few words and an arrow (I was told that will change soon). And I had a difficult time figuring out what the other shops on the strip actually were, although I'm sure with some investigation I could find meowt. Regardless, the gallery is a lovely little slice of artistic heaven. A lot of the work reminded me of a popular and mature style often found in the midwest, photographs of lush green spaces around the world like the Netherlands and southern France, the great lakes, places that remind us that the lush natural world isn't simply crucial, it's also easy on the eyes. The pieces were very fairly priced and would grace the inner domain of an urban dweller with wonderful color. Another installation by a guest artist featured work that was far more abstract and challenging, but the tones were earthy, which allowed the two styles to co-exist. It's a small space, not crammed, but certainly full of work, and it was a joy to meet the owners. Let's hear it for a new neighborhood and some great new neighbors!
