This lush trail run offers scenic routes, several stretch points, and ample parking. I used it while training for my runDisney Tower of Terror 10 Miler last fall and am currently using it to prep for the 2015 Wine & Dine 1/2. I said it is a trail run and I do mean it (many a day I've had to pop rocks out of the bottom of my shoes). There are also plenty of wild animals to be found while running and at dusk you'll more than likely see a deer as well. I would say stay off the trails in the dark as there is little to no lighting on most parts of the trail and bring your own water as no fountain stations exist on this run either. Have fun out there and get those miles in, I'll see you on the trail!

The trails are well cleared, and a portion of the trail is shaded and is good to run through. I made the mistake of walking the 1st mile, and running the 2nd mile. The parking lot has an approximate of 20 parking spaces and a port-a-potty. (I know gross right, but it's still better than no facilities at all right? Am I right or right ??? Anyways the enterance is a bit hidden, and if you do not know thy this trailhead is here you could easily not realize it is here. But if you go to the end of Mainland on the side of Walmart. It is on the opposite side of the road as Walmart. The same side of those apartment buildings. The trail is composed of concrete for people looking to have a leisurely stroll and also had some more challenging trails, and when I say challenging I mean not paved. They are some very thin and windy trails possibly created by deers, since we know now that they usually have a daily route that they take, always passing through the same areas over again. Maybe It was produced by man, I have no idea- but I do know they are a lot of fun to ride on a mountain bike. I don't know about a fixie bike because I have never ridden one in the trails, because I like the convenience of the different gears since there are many hills and dales to maneuver over. When I am on foot, & on the dirt paths, I usually wear my ankle wrap because I don't have the most stable ankles and I would definitely advise anyone else to the same if they have an atypical or unstable gait, or ankle issues like tendinitis, because that would suck to hurt your ankle and have to limp on back to your vehicle or bus stop one foot. Also I like to slather on bug spray and sunscreen, so I can protect my skin from the mosquitos that troll these trees in vast numbers and voracious appetites. Some other wild life you may encounter on your scenic walk here are deer and squirrels. I believe they close at dusk and open at dawn. There is also a lending library, little mini library box here as well. Whee you can take a book you want to read and put one in there. I like to donate my old books I have already read to there as well. I will include some pics of that as well. Happy Trails

There are two SPARKLING CLEAN (I'm kidding - they aren't sparkling clean, but they are decent) port-a-potties. The parking lot has about 20 spots, so it can get full (especially on weekends), so get there early. And the best part is that there is a park right next to it with a playground. So, if you don't feel like dragging those annoying little ones along with you on the trail, just drop them off at the playground and then RUN! I'm sure they will be there when you get back! It's level, well-mulched, and features artwork representing the Stations of the Cross. It encircles open fields and a formal garden, as well as bird and bat houses. Branching off from the Heritage Loop Trail are side trails that take you to more springs that contribute to the San Antonio River. There is a trail to the foot of the Olmos Dam. I *think* you're allowed to park here without a university permit near the softball fields. I did for a couple of hours and didn't get a ticket. I asked a couple of people on the trails and they said they *thought* it would be ok, but nobody seems to know for sure. This is a good place for a morning walk in the summer since it's so shaded. It's all crushed gravel, mulch, or dirt with hardly any inclines at all. A cheap pair of tennis shoes will suffice. 99% of the trails are shaded as you walk through the beautiful woods. The main loop trail is marked well, but once you get on the side trails, they split into separate trails that aren't marked. You won't get lost, but it's kind of confusing which trails you are on. As Stephen C stated in his tip, head left on the trail and go clockwise if you want to view the Stations of the Cross art work in chronological order - BUT be warned, because when I was there, a couple of them had wasp nests in the boxes that covered them. Don't get too close and you'll be fine - just don't rush up to them and put your face real close to view the art. Stay a good 5 feet away and make sure there's not a wasp nest in it. Check the map at the trail head and make sure you find your way to the Olmos Dam - you can get really close to it, if you walk down a little hill and get off the trail a little bit. Little Blue Hole is located toward the end of the loop trail if you started clockwise or near the beginning if you started counter-clockwise (both of these are also listed on the map at the trailhead). Total trails might be a mile long, but if you head toward Blue Hole and the Heritage Trails at Incarnate Word you can get another mile or so for your walk. To get to Blue Hole, take an immediate right on the gravel walkway from the parking lot - this is before you walk into the park and get to the trailhead - look for the bridge in my pictures. I really recommend checking out Blue Hole - it's a serene, peaceful setting and a great place for self-reflection and just being by yourself if that's what you need. This pathway will also take you to the grotto and some other paved walkways that take you onto the grounds of The Incarnate Word to some other cool spots.
