I Moved back to area and decided to come back to the church where I was baptized…read more My other half had went to service on a Sunday and ended up getting preyed on from a creep that is well know to this location and priest. Unfortunately this is not the same church my parents were married at or where I was baptized.

I recently visited to give thanks to God for the election of Pope Leo XIV and was blessed to be able to attend both Confession and Holy Mass in the evening. I deeply appreciate the parish's availability with the sacraments.. ~ Confessions were offered bilingually, and the Mass was celebrated in Spanish. While I am primarily an English speaker, it was still a grace-filled opportunity to worship God through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As the Church teaches, the sacred liturgy transcends language, uniting us in the same Eucharistic mystery. ~ I could tell that the priest has a strong pastoral heart and a sincere desire to serve his people. I offer the following reflections in a spirit of fraternal charity, rooted in my love for the Church and her liturgical traditions. My hope is that these notes may encourage ongoing fidelity to the richness of our Catholic faith. 1. Proper Liturgical Vestments ~ The priest presiding at Mass was wearing only a stole over his alb, without a chasuble. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 337: "The vestment proper to the priest celebrant at Mass and other sacred actions directly connected with the Mass is the chasuble, worn over the alb and stole." ~ While this does not affect the validity of the Eucharist, it is an illicit omission unless there is a grave reason (e.g., lack of vestments or emergency circumstances). The chasuble, as a symbol of the priest's sacrificial role in the person of Christ (in persona Christi), is a powerful liturgical sign that should be preserved. 2. General Absolution and Canon Law ~ After going to individual confession, I noticed what seemed to be the priest giving general absolution to those still in line when he had to begin Mass. This raised some concern, as general absolution is only permitted in rare cases, such as imminent danger of death or grave necessity, as per #961 of the Code of Canon Law. ~ Simply not having enough time before Mass does not qualify. While the priest may have acted pastorally, Canon #962 also reminds the faithful that those who receive general absolution must still make an individual confession of grave sins as soon as possible. 3. Tabernacle Placement ~ The tabernacle was located off to the side of the sanctuary. While this is permitted under Church law, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal #315 states that the place for reservation of the Blessed Sacrament should be "truly noble, prominent, readily visible, beautifully decorated, and suitable for prayer." ~ While not illicit, when the tabernacle is placed centrally, it emphasizes the Real Presence of Christ as the heart of the church. Pope Benedict XVI echoed this in his 2007 Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis (§69), urging that tabernacle placement express "the centrality of the Blessed Sacrament." 4. Sacred Music ~ Guitars were used during the liturgy. While the Church permits a variety of instruments, they are used in a manner that fosters reverence and fits the sacred character of the Mass (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, §120 and GIRM #393). ~ The Church has consistently taught that music should "lead the faithful to the mystery of faith and the participation in the sacred rites." What's essential is that the music chosen be dignified and in continuity with the Church's liturgical heritage. **Final Thoughts** ~ These reflections are shared not as criticisms but as sincere hopes for continued liturgical fidelity. The priest's pastoral care was evident, and I am grateful for his ministry. ~ As laypeople, we are all called to love, support, and pray for our priests and parishes while gently encouraging deeper conformity to the Church's liturgical and doctrinal beauty.
