If you love mega churches, you'll love this one. This is a church that praises its own cafe, concert, and pastor over Jesus. They have camera guys trying to get every angle of the music opening, and pastor Jeremy that won't give most people the time of day. Security also acts like they have authority over you and act like the pastor is their God. The Bible verses they go over are for people with low attention spans because the explaining feels more like a ted talk. I liked it at first with the cafe, the clean seats, you can even drink coffee and sit whenever (you can literally order in the middle of service) and there's air conditioning. I attended and was heavily involved at Skyline for many years. From my experience, I thought there was always plenty of parking, decent coffee, I enjoyed their cozy seats and clean bathrooms! Many times I heard Skylines Pastors in their sermons say you can't hide anything from God! But I later discovered that the Wesleyan Disapline includes the use of Non Disclosure Statements. Are Non Disclosures even biblical? Don't Non Disclosures suppress the truth, hide misconduct and contradict Christian theology? I often heard What Would Jesus Do on Skylines campus! Well, would Jesus use Non Disclosure Statements? I have tried to talk to members of Skylines current staff and Wesleyan Headquarters regarding NDAs and I felt like I just got the run around and I don't think they handled things properly! read more

I'm Christian and just moved to the area. I went here for the first time today 5/1. They disarm you with beautiful music and then preach a political message, including putting senate bills on the screen and blatantly misstating facts about the bill. My visit here was a rollercoaster of emotion, welcomed by beauty, smiles and song, only to find that underneath they have a political agenda and are masking it behind faith. Extremely sad and disappointing experience. I'm happy my faith is strong enough to know God does not support the hate they preach but would caution the newcomer! read more

Skyline seems like a superchurch, what with it's four services and large auditorium, but it really is a place for families who want to get to know the Lord in a close way. The church is diverse as far as age and race and it's easy to fit in. The church has an excellent children's ministry and Sunday School subjects that are really engaging. The campus has excellent parking and shuttle service. They always have big events, such as football games, sailing excursions, Halloween night, Christmas programs, etc. They put an emphasis in joining small groups because they believe that if something were to happen to you in the middle of the night and you were to need 3 or 4 people to help, you should be able to get that type of help from your small group. I fell in love with this church when I went to SDSU and found that Pastor Jim Garlow's teaching is a good mix of academia and passion. He really loves the Lord and so do the people. One time I was crying at the end of a sermon and was sitting in the sanctuary after service. An older woman asked me what was wrong and then she stopped and prayed with me. That's the kind of church this is- the kind made of people who will pray with you. You will feel comfortable at any stage of your spiritual walk, whether you're just barely curious, seeking answers or wanting to get in touch with the Lord. I grew up in church all my life, and this was the first church that really helped me to understand the intense love God has for me and helped me to realize that being a Christian isn't something you do on Sunday, but it's something you are in all aspects of your life. I am not a member of this church (but will probably join) l was looking for a safe halloween activity for my son to attend and randomly came across this church. I was expecting a small gathering with a few families passing out candy. Well, l was truly amazed at this church and its members! First of all thank you for hosting this event for the community and opening your facility for our families to enjoy! Secondly l know a lot effort and heart went into this event alone. There were tons of activities, food vendors, trunk or treat and just overall a great safe family atmosphere. At no cost or really reasonable prices for food/beverages. I had to go inside and take a quick look at your actual main auditorium, it was very beautiful indeed. Your entire building was just beautiful and very welcoming overall! Once again l am so grateful l found this event and l am looking foward to attending your religious service in the near future. Skyline church is the real deal and the real message of God is spoke. I was there this last weekend for the Come Holy Spirit conference that was held there. The structure itself was a work of God. They honor all the Martyrs of God with their names engraved on the ground concrete slabs around there church. I can tell you this is a spirit filled church and the word of God is not watered down. People will get offended if they want a nice sugar coated message so they can feel good for the week. I am glad this church does NOT do that. I heard the lead pastor Jim Garlow speak and he had such a brilliant intellectual message on people of the past who sparked revival. As for the flags like the one person who commented below cried about. Israel flag. you want to know why it is there? number one the scriptures you are pulling are completely irrelevant. I will set you straight since you are so into king Jesus. 1.Israel is the apple of Gods eye 2. Skyline Church has a new pastor who is practical and gives you something on Sunday you can use on Monday. While Pastor (Dr.) Jeremy McGarity has an amazing message for the church every Sunday, he encourages everyone to make their faith a part of everyday. This is the church for me! People that genuinely care about you no matter your past, and who don't race to be the first out of the parking lot after service. Everyone seems to love to spend time in the cafe and actually get to know each other. If you're looking for a church home, this may be what you've been looking for! No perfect people allowed! Really disappointed by Jeremys open attack on the LGBTQ community claiming they are trying to "convert" people. I was also disgusted by the attack on the diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" not to mention bringing charged political discussions into every service. I rate two stars instead of just one because I appreciate the music and kids program but honestly, I wont ever return after such a hate filled message. So sad to see. I've been a part of skyline for a couple years now and love everything about the church. Pastor Jeremy is so honest and preaches the truth in love every week. He is constantly applying scripture to our daily lives and helping our sanctification process. I'm involved in two different ministries at the church and have been so happy with the experiences and how well they are lead. No church is perfect. It is made up of humans like you and me, it can't be. However, Skyline teaches love, communication, honesty and the truth. But as the Bible says, most of all, love. In Southern California, among vanity and a self absorbed culture, this church is the most outwardly loving church that I have experienced. Could things improve? Of course. Always. Back in the day when the hideous building that is the Skyline Church was being constructed, I found myself having conversations with my mother about it. "What is that, a jail house? I mean, I know there is quite a bit of crime in this part of town, but really -- that -- much??" Not too long after this, we discovered it was a church. Whaaaaat? Where's the steeple, where are all the doors that open up to see all the people?? This ain't no church. Dumbfounded by this sight, what'd we do? Why, we jumped on that bandwagon straight away, of course! My mom, dad and I went probably three times. We didn't like the large sitting room where the minister or pastor would speak at us. Instead, we went upstairs to a private room on Saturdays where we had discussions about Tim LaHaye's "Left Behind" series. It was quality learning, but definitely made my disbelief in the idea of the Bible and Jesus and all that mumbo jumbo even stronger. I am not the church type. But... I guess if you were going to go to a church in the El Cajon area, this is the one I'd choose. It's up on the top of a hill so you can feel all high and mighty, and even closer to the Lord, God, Himself. read more

Was incredibly excited to attend the 100 year anniversary of Sunrise Service on Mt Helix, only to be incredibly disappointed by the lack of substance offered by Dr. Garlow. The man may have only spoke for 30 minutes, but I know he moved to SD 22 years ago, he's from TX, he's a widow, his new wife is from SF, she's been to Isreal 59 times, soon to be 60, he rented a white Mercedes to court her, etc etc etc... What of scripture? On Easter? He concentrated his sermon on "this guy, Jesus"... emphasis on how he folded his clothes and took his time, nonchalantly with his resurrection, emphasis on the moving of the stone from the tomb by an angel who apparently had a sense of humor (really???), emphasis on the other's who left their tombs with the resurrection of our Lord and apparently went to visit their grandchildren (are you kidding?!?!??! "Grandma's at the door", Dr. Garlow imitating a child at the breakfast table telling mom and dad that dead grandmother has come for a visit?!?!?!), emphasis on HIS INTERPRETATION that mentions of "The angel of the Lord" in OT was surely a reference rather to Christ himself... No!!!!! I wanted to take something meaningful from the morning service, from the EASTER morning service - I wanted a message of hope, I wanted a message of renewal, I wanted a message that would sustain my soul in troubling times, keeping my heart intact and looking blissfully, contentedly toward the return of our Savior - rather I heard sad attempts at stand up comedy about this guy, Jesus, the rock star... Tell ya what... MY Lord was a man like you and me, a man who appealed to the humanity in us, who gave us hope that any person had the potential to be saved and do good works; Jesus certainly was not a rock star like Dr. Garlow seems to believe himself to be. read more

My family and I have been attending here for almost 3 years now. We were baptized 2 years ago and our daughter was also dedicated here. The staff is always friendly, my daughter looks forward to Sunday mornings and had a blast at their camp this summer. We love how every single pastor here is unified in what they preach and they aren't afraid to talk about issues of the real world that other churches brush off. My family and I attended Skyline for more than 10 years and still would be if we had not had to move for job reasons. Pastor Jim Garlow is a top notch pastor, speaker and author. He truly understands the Bible, Christian history, and consistently challenges his congregation to live a life that truly follows Christ and God's Word. He stands up for Biblical values in his preaching no matter what the cost and together with the church makes a difference in a very dark world. Skyline is definitely a leader among churches. Well here goes. There are times I dint want to hear what I am hearing but I feel that Dr.Garlow is telling me the biblical truths. He is the type to tell me or us the way it is NOT what we want to hear. Been going to Skyline for about 8 years and have learned alot. Alot of churches are feel good tell em what is correct today and get the member numbers up,well not here. Its nice to go and hear what has been squelched for years. Its time for the churches to teach us. Lots of programs,great preschool. When I walked into this church I wasn't expecting much. My faith had been shaken by life's traumas and to me 'a big church' only meant disengaged. I was completely off. The first thing I experienced when I stepped onto the campus was people that seemed genuinely happy, normal and full of life. Upon entering the sanctuary, I was met by a smiling greeter with a pamphlet of announcements and information about the churches' ministries and contacts. The service opened with passionate worship that washed over me, and I actually felt like I'd finally come home. The worship was respectful to others and still carried a lot of power. For the first time I truely understood what my grandfather meant when he used to say, 'still waters run deep'. That's what these people were in their worship, soothing and non-invasive but powerfully moving in their singing and devotions. Then the pastor gave a message that was relavent to people today, full of content that I was able to apply to my life. Everything was genuine and that service was the beginning of my healing. The people at this church are the real deal. they're not so religious that they try to turn every conversation into a spiritual experience. They are what they are and completely comfortable with it, therefore, they make everyone else comfortable being who and what they are, without feeling like they're being sized up or judged. I would gladly encourage anyone to attend this church with confidence that it would be a good experience for them. read more

This seems to have become a modern day lovers lane. Any given night you can drive up and around the massive parking lot to discover at least five cars parked far apart from each other on the opposite end of the parking lots complete with the windows fogged and everything. The people at Skyline Church have all been friendly and welcoming to us (we are new around here), which makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. The pastor is easy to listen to: he doesn't preach at us, it is more like he is having a conversation with us. And the things he is talking about are applicable to every day life. Another great thing about this church is that our adult children, and our grandchildren, all love going there on Sundays. We can sense God is present there in the people's hearts and we are wanting to get involved. The various leaders at the church have all made it easy to get involved and no one has dropped the ball where we are concerned. They phone, they reach out, they meet at agreed upon times and places, and they make you feel like you really do matter. It is a great church! read more

I've been going to Skyline for 6 years, & it's one of my favorite churches I've ever attended. The core reason I love it is because the teaching is so good. I always learn a lot about the Bible not just from a theological perspective but also the historical perspective, as well as how to apply its teachings to my life. Jim Garlow is a very gifted teacher. I also enjoy the worship music, and I feel like the church's programs are very well run. I volunteer with AWANA, which is a fantastic program to help children memorize Scripture in their formative years. If you're looking for a church to help you grow in your Christian faith, and also connect with like-minded people, Skyline is definitely worth checking out. read more

I went to Skyline for a couple of years. I even became a member. However, I didn't like the music and when I suggested there be a choir, I was told by Pastor Jim's son Josh they don't have a choir and he wasn't going to put one together, I left. Plus, as the first person posted, Pastor Jim definitely is pretty heavy handed when it comes to certain issue and I think he really is turning into a Jim Jones. He has his henchmen above him (other ministers) who do his bidding and Pastor Jim himself has body guards. Gee, I wonder why. I'll never return to this church. I see that even some of the congregants had to call other congregants who used to attend to see if they would come back for Christmas Eve. I think their attendance is going down the tubes. It couldn't be about Pastor Jim and his other ministers could it? read more

I attended this church for about 7 years before finally breaking my ties. The middle school program is awful. Many of the kids that attended were bullying and judgmental to a friend of mine. One of the worst instances was when an aide or assistant named "Shane" grabbed the back of my friend's chair and literally threw him out of the chair and onto the floor, saying that he should "go socialize." The pastoral staff picked favorites, and would not engage you unless you went up to them while they were surrounded by their clique of "cool kids" who sneered whenever you walked by. Overall, a very negative experience that has tarnished the reputation of this church forever in my eyes. The mega church vibe is very strong; no personal connection at all to any of the head staff, they just push you for more tithe each week. Just a huge production that makes the Christian Church look like a joke on Broadway. Find a smaller, more intimate church if you actually want to enjoy those few hours on a Sunday reserved for worship, not judgment from bratty kids. read more
