UGH. Flu and cold season is upon us. And like, that's crappy in its own right. But now, every…read moresniffle or cough or sore throat I find that I question myself. 'OMG, is it COVID?!' If I assume it's allergies or heaven forbid a run of the mill, annoying as you know what common cold-- but then it isn't-- I am that person. That person walking around, prolonging the pandemic. Well, since the US has a 'rapid testing shortage' or sorts and I have kids that get sick constantly this time of year, due to school and kids just overall being gross. (Additionally, they're a bit squeamish when it comes to a swab being shoved up their nose, touching their brain...) I decided to take Test Iowa up on their free spit tests. I went online, signed up to have some sent to my door. Boom. All Iowa residents are eligible to have up to TEN sent to your doorstep. Well. They just sat in my pantry. Waiting... Then I had a coworker get a breakthrough case of COVID a couple weeks ago. While I wasn't in direct contact with him, I was in the same room with him during one of his more contagious days. The minute I heard about his test, my throat started to hurt. Because why not? Well, luckily I had these tests on hand! I spit in a vial. Followed the easy instructions provided and then dropped it off at this State Hygienic Laboratory. (Cutting down at least 48 hours of wait time for the results-- how lucky are we Johnson County that this laboratory is located here!) After dropping it off, I received both a text and email when they processed it. Yet another text and email less than 24 hours later on when the results were in. (Negative... but better safe than sorry.) No complaints here! Get your tests at TestIowa.com-- have them handy and drop them off here. Painless.

I called to ask if they provide a cervix dilator before their IUD procedures. I was told by the…read morereceptionist, "The nurse said they will not give you any narcotics just because you asked for them, because the IUD shouldn't be that painful anyway." If you are a woman considering an IUD, and you have not had a baby before, do not go to this clinic. If you are planning to use this clinic, and you have questions about the pain of this procedure, do not ask. They will assume you are drug seeking. I had my first IUD done at Robert A Mesropian Center for Community Care, in New Hampshire. Because of my size and the fact that I have never had a child, they wanted me to use a dilator the night before the procedure. I didn't know, and I didn't apply the pill until the next morning. When they put the IUD in, I was in so much pain that I threw up, and I cramped for the rest of the day. I wasn't given any narcotics from that doctor though, and there's no reason why I would expect that a new doctor would give any narcotics. But, it seems that they also don't offer any dilator's before the procedure, and this is what I wanted to get clear on. Based on my last experience, I would be too afraid to do the procedure without a dilator. Given my past experience, it's reasonable why I would be overwhelmed as I prepare to have the old IUD removed and a new one put in. It's unfortunate that the receptionist is more concerned with trying to "out" potential drug seekers than answering the questions of prospective patients. When it comes to smaller, more personal clinics, the most important thing is feeling safe as a patient. I would never be able to feel safe to share my concerns at this clinic, so there would never be a reason for me to ever go here. Anyone with similar feelings or concerns should also avoid this clinic. Planned Parenthood was much more helpful and supportive on the phone. They do not offer dilator's before their IUD procedures, but it was really easy for me to get that information. They were very kind and understanding as I explained my situation. I may just go back to New Hampshire to have it done. I will also say that I told the receptionist that I would get a recommendation from the doctor who did my first one, in order to verify how unusual my IUD experience was. I don't even think the receptionist heard me. She literally just repeated that the procedure shouldn't be that painful. I don't even know if this clinic offers dilators before the procedure, to be honest. They very well might! So, it really just speaks to the importance of professionalism on the part of the front desk.

I've had severe, almost unrelenting pain radiating from my neck down my entire left arm with most pain localized in my arm/elbow area. Started over the weekend and got bad enough that I went to this urgent care Monday night. They did provide a prompt exam and cardiac work-up which wasn't conclusive so recommended I go to the ER because my blood pressure was "crazy" (165/110) as described by the PA that saw me. I also filled out paperwork to set up a primary care provider here before I left. Went to the ER Monday night (UIHC Iowa City - another place to avoid!) and after five hours to certify that I wasn't having heart issues, I was discharged with likely cervical nerve pinched or damaged. Despite the pain I was experiencing, the University of Iowa ER wouldn't even give me a Tylenol while I waited or before sending me home. Wednesday (2 days later) I go to PT at the University for my first appointment. Too much pain to do anything beyond applying a TENS unit at max power for 10 minutes with no relief. They send me back to my primary care provider because they state that I need something strong to get the pain under control. So, I go back to this Mercy "Urgent Care" in North Liberty and my primary care account isn't set up yet or something (pain makes it hard to concentrate) AND the best they can do is set up an appointment for me the following Monday!!! WTF is "urgent care" when they don't even screen your vitals, see you with tears on your face from the blinding pain and again, can't even offer you the medication you were sent there to recieve?!? Now I'm home, searching for the gabapentin the vet prescribed for our dog (one of the meds they mentioned at the PT appointment) and will have to use WebMD to find out what dose I should take. Maybe I'll find some old leftover opiates in the medicine cabinet somewhere, again, on my own to determine how to live with this pain for another 5-6 days. Thanks for NOTHING!!!
