A few weeks ago my friends and I rushed over to the New Headingley Club for a gig, as it was their friends performing, and as I understand it they don't often get a chance to see them in Leeds. We came from town, and discovered the club down a leafy backstreet in Headingley, tucked away from Otley Road, in its own delightful bit of privacy. It has a long drive, with lovely tall trees, a delightful front garden, and some lovely flower pots.
As I understand it, you need to be with a member to come in, and once we'd entered we walked through into a typical social club lounge, with a bar to the side. The decor is much more plush than your standard social, with lovely carpeting and light fixtures -somewhere you could easily imagine whiling away the time with a pint and a good friend. The locals upstairs told us where to find the gig, since it's a bit of a maze, and were really friendly, if all a few generations older than us.
We managed to navigate to the function room, paid our fees, and wandered to the bar where the entire room was filled with audience members. Now, the odd thing was, everyone was seated. The whole room was filled with chairs, each one taken, for the gig - this made it nigh on impossible to find a space. We grabbed some (very cheap) pints at the bar, and delicately tried to make our way through, with more than a few grumbles from the folks already seated. We stopped twice to find somewhere to stand and were actually told off by people behind us, which really wasn't very welcoming -despite being nearly thirty it felt as though we were being reprimanded as teenagers for disrupting things. We hadn't intended to...
Eventually we managed to find somewhere at the back to sit, without bothering anyone, and tried to avoid moving. Whilst the gig itself was excellent, and the audience warmed up a bit once we were out of their way, it didn't make for a good start. Perhaps I'm wrong, but we certainly felt like we were (unintentionally) invading the space, and perhaps not so welcome but some of the members. The joke of it is, that despite being younger than 90% of the attendees, I actually have sciatica and could have done with finding a seat sooner-but no one was to know.
During the break we sat in the smoking area, which is in the lovely garden, and it has to be said that they really take care of the space. It's delightfully clean, and you can see into the huge games room next door to the garden, where there are snooker and pool tables to enjoy.
Overall, it's a lovely building, with cheap drinks to save your pennies, and a mix of welcoming and not-so-welcoming folk. I can't say I'll be rushing back, mostly as I'd rather enjoy a gig where you can stand and dance (which the band tried to encourage at the end, to no avail) but I can see it being worthwhile checking out the event listings to see what's going on. I may be entering a new decade in a year or so, but I'm still young at heart, so it's perhaps just not for me -not for a wee while, anyhow. A gorgeous place, with some amazing outdoor space, and perfect if you're into escaping from the younger generations! read more
