I only know mine on the basis of Sub Dub - a monthly dubstep…read morenight, held there because it's big, friendly and - probably - rather cheap to rent for an evening of bass-based fun. You get me? It's not just Sub Dub which is hosted by the WIC. The likes of Riff Raff and the notorious night Cabbage have all called the West Indian Centre home before. I'm not sure what it is about the place that makes it so special, it just is. The way the bass vibrates your rib cage like it does no where else. Going here for a night out is a different experience but one you'll always remember, that I've no doubt. It's as close to an old school rave as you'll get, trust me. Of course, by day, this is a community centre. If you're after a review of that, then isn't it.

The first few years I lived in Leeds I never knew where it was, arriving and departing in a taxi and being transported somewhere that was not in either Headingley or the city centre. One Summer someone suggested we walked to SubDub as the night remained light for longer. And then I realised it was more than a small warehouse and lay in the West Indian community of Chapel Town - hence the Dub night we religiously flocked to once a month. Back in the day it was much less than a tenner to get in and at some point in the evening there was a bit of elbow room to dance. These days it costs a lot more but still the Irration Steppas boys boom their dub beats out. Be sure to take your earplugs as last time I went I had a ringing in my ears for days. This venue has plenty of other nights - psychedelic trance, drum-n-bass, hard house - that are usually on once a month or a few times a year. I'd rather go here than any club in town on a weekend. The vibe is an alternative one and sometimes they sell curry and chips in the venue!

I think it's more for the locals, this one. Other social clubs such as the Brudenell and Hyde Park have more life swarming around. But then you may just fancy a quiet one! Drinks are cheap as chips.

It's light and airy, given the huge windows, and the tables are spaciously laid out for groups, solo coffee drinkers, and couplets to arrange themselves. There are 60s style tables and chairs, low standing long wooden blocks, comfy cushioned benching, and groovy bar stools. Top tip: if you've a laptop, there are electric outlets abound to plug in, and naturally, free wifi. The back wall displays plentiful curious prints and paintings, there's wallpaper with pineapples on it, and even a tiled bit of wall that kids are welcomed to deface - Outlaws will even supply the pens. Delightful phrases such as 'Darwin Rules' and 'it's really hot today!' currently decorate the wall. To eat and drink, you have an array of hot drinks (the usual suspects) and a curious menu, offering up toasted sandwiches, home made stew, sushi (from Sushiboy) and salads. If you're more into cake, the bar has a myriad of gooey goodness. My personal recommendation is the spongy raspberry offering, whose name I do not know. Get involved in a bit of that, with an Americano on the side, and you'll be a happy chap. Bored? No probs. They've all the board games you could want to while away a few hours. And don't even get me started on how cool the music is - these guys know their chill out. (I realise it's not to everyone's taste, but I'm a fan!) Also, try the home made stew, it's warming and awesome. One last thing - ask about the magic till, if you've a small child with you. They'll love it. The Outlaws bar: By night, this place transforms into a cosy hub of creativity, music and cool. They've a range of regular events that are most worth checking out, more notably, their DJ nights. Their Baleraric social is something to put in the diary, with world famous DJs performing fantastic sets, and of course -you can enjoy regular evenings of excellent music from Joe's Bakery and co. The monthly performance poetry night, Sticks And Stones, is another awesome event to get booked in. Expect a host of wordly musings from the open mic-ers, waxing lyrical in hip-hop style, thoughtful abandon, and hilarious commentary. Every month features a highly regarded poet, and now I've been lucky enough to have seen Mark Grist in the flesh. The drinks are ultra cool, with a select few cocktails and spirits on offer, alongside Brooklyn Lager and Estrella on draft, Brewdog, Anchor Steam, Belle Rose and more in bottles, and a varied amount of guest beers appearing depending on the season. Prices, of course, are a little higher with such premium offerings - but, this isn't a complaint as such. I like good beer, if possible, excellent beer. I don't expect to get that for £2.50. In the evening, when the place is full, there's an interesting effect where the windows steam up - even that is cool, as it feels like you're enveloped in a secret blanket of awesome. So, there you have it. Most of the things I love, rolled into one great big hug of a hang out. Wifi and power, check. Good coffee and lush cake, check. A range of good food for lunch, check. High end beers, check. Interesting and artful events, check. Quirky vintage décor, check. Amazing music, check. Good people? Don't even doubt it for a second.

The bar is small but spacious, mirrors complimenting the decor along with disco balls and bottle-storage globes dotted about the room. The seating is comfy to lounge upon, and the windows make the most of the limited light stolen by the NCP car park opposite. The Yacht Club has an extensive selection of drinks, ranging from fruity teas to more spirits I've ever seen crammed on a shelf; apart from one snag. As a whisky drinker, I asked if they had Jack Daniels Honey Whisky in, and the bartender was puzzled, offering a cheeky quip of, "we have Jack Daniels, and honey?". The bartenders are charming lads who keep the place clean and tidy while retaining the laid-back atmosphere - one of them had Facebook open on his laptop behind the bar! The drinks are kind of pricey, but you would expect it from bars of the type. The food is great too - I had a sandwich and it was the best I've had in Leeds; soft bread and great quality cheese resting on a crisp salad. The only bad thing about the place is the bartender from next door's Rebel Pin-Up who storms through the bar from time to time with a look of pure anger on his face, and I promised that I wouldn't bring the Society of Young Publishers into this review! I'll echo much of what others say about this excellent little club…read more It's unassuming and small, but is efficiently run with really nice people - both punters and staff alike - filling the place. A well priced bar with one quality draught ale available - it was the superb Roosters Yankee when I went but is likely to change at any given point - and a relaxed room in which to meet friends, chat and catch up. Connected by a small corridor is the venue itself. Not too large again but comfortable and with a half decent sound system too. I've seen 2 shows here and both both were very enjoyable with a casual approach on the door and enough space to move about. One thing - if you see something heavy in here it'll be pretty intense as people are very close to the stage. I saw local Leeds heroes Hookworms here and 2 of the guitarists had to stand in the audience as the stage simply wasn't large enough! But no matter - it just felt more cosy and laid back! Very conveniently sited by the bus station it's dead easy to get home after too. As others have said this is a members club, but membership is a quid or something so fantastic value. Just make sure you are a member before turning up and expecting to get in!

An almost town hall vibe (if that makes sense to the country folk). You know the place. The bars bussed in from some friend of a farmers, the seating's all handed down and its manned by the local PTA. Basically what i'm trying to say, in the same way any village without a pub manages to put together a sort of community bar, the chambers manages to fashion a real atmosphere of here but for the grace of good people. You feel like everything is built on goodwill and i think the vibe tells. As soon as i entered on my first visit i was asked what i wanted to drink, on uming and ahhring i was suggested a beverage (tick the box for effort). I clocked the table football in the corner (tick the box for free to all fun) and then i was charged a pound for my drink and 20p for space raiders (tick the box for affordable and tick the box for space raiders - yes there's a space raiders box, every bar in Leeds knows it and that's why they all fail!). They were friendly, it was cheap, it was nice space just to be, not overcrowded, not full of people who "just love the cultural aspects that are soo..." (whatever hipsters these days say). It might feel a little out of the way but i can quickly see it being first stop before the calls if i ever have to show my face at parties with less "local savy". A proper little find i feel and well worth dropping in!

This centre has been a community and social centre for the Irish in Leeds for decades. Inside there…read moreis a beautifully refurbished building, with a bar and huge seating area, and upstairs are the conference rooms including the O'Meara lounge (also with a bar) where many events are held. Whilst most cities now have their own Irish centers, none could boast quite as much community involvement as the one in Leeds. As well as working together with many of the Leeds Irish cultural groups, such as the Leeds Comhaltas and the Irish Arts Foundation, they also hold ceilis, musical events and the Tuesday Club - a special event for over 55s with activities, refreshments and irish entertainment. Although their website might look like it hails from the beginning of the 90s, there is certainly plenty going on in this buzzing community resource. From room hire to Sunday carvery, it's worth checking out! (And I shall resist the urge to write 'for the craic' or some other naff Irish themed joke!)
