I am dumbfounded by an experience I recently had with O'Gara. I hired him to mow, mulch, do spring…read moreclean-up and trim an overgrown weeping cherry. The weeping cherry was overgrown when we bought the house and we did our best to get it back into shape. Unfortunately, it became out of shape again after my husband passed In 2020 from cancer and the tree went unpruned. On April 6, Mr O'Gara came but left before trimming the tree into shape. I assumed it was due to the cold day and contacted him to ask if they were coming back to finish. He said "Well come back not today but we'll work on it" On April 18th, I contacted him again regarding trimming the tree and where best to park in my driveway due to construction going on at my house. He replied "OK" On May 4th, I received the bill for the spring clean-up & tree trimming and sent this text: "Hi....Received your bill but need you to come trim the weeping cherry before I pay that portion." I received no reply. On March 6th, I paid the $150 clean-up (which amounted to blowing leaves into a gully) and sent the following email: "Two questions: 1 When do you think you will be trimming the weeping cherry so I can pay the remainder of the bill? 2 When will mowing begin?" Seemed simple enough. Mr O'Gara replied he'd be there the next day. And he did show up. With an obvious attitude. In a nutshell, he said he had no idea what I wanted done to the tree, and that it wasn't a weeping cherry. I said it was, reiterated what I had said before and said for him to just do as best he could. Then, out of nowhere, he said he had really shown up to let me know I needed to find someone else to mow and mulch cause he didn't like that I said I wouldn't pay the $75 until he did the tree. Huh? Of course I wouldn't! He'd been saying he was coming to do it for a month! His attitude was so arrogant and his demeanor so unwarranted that I agreed he should no longer be doing work for me. I also told him not to cut the tree as I was concerned about what he would do to it. So here's the thing. Im not going to debate the tree itself because the issue is not whether or not it is a weeping cherry, the issue is why did it matter to him how the tree was trimmed (and had been historically trimmed)? Isn't whats important what I want done? And how is it that my politely asking him to trim the tree so I could pay the $75 bill balance so offensive? That makes no sense. Maybe he didn't know how to cut the tree. Maybe he didn't like dealing with a woman. Maybe he regretted his $35 mowing estimate and wanted out of that. I have absolutely no idea. This was very bizarre. I cannot recommend O'Gara and would suggest anyone thinking of hiring him to think twice. He clearly has no respect for a verbal contract, for the customer's wishes or for the customer themself, for that matter. The fact that we discussed all this while standing on a lawn that needed mowing and, for no apparent reason, he had no qualms leaving me, a 68 yr old woman with mobility issues and no lawnmower, high and dry to fend for myself, should say it all. If you want someone irresponsible and unreliable who might stop working due to some imagined slight, he's your guy, otherwise, move on. Behavior like his is not only unethical, it is not normal.
