It took me almost three years to finally make the decision to file for Bankruptcy. I had researched attorneys a couple years before and liked what the reviews said about New Chapter Law Group. I tried credit consolidation and everything I could think of. I had a decent credit score and had never been late or missed a payment in my life. But, eventually felt I was drowning and had no choice but to find an attorney. I contacted New Chapter Law Group in early March and spoke with both Kristin Lamar & Nik Chawla. Because of Covid-19 the initial interview was done with Nik by phone. After speaking with him and asking all my questions, I felt ready to move forward. That's when the work begins...and it is a lot of work to get all the documents together that will eventually go to the Trustee. Just when you think you have every document possible, something else comes up. I did meet with Nik at their office before the date was set for the Trustee meeting. It's a beautiful office and we both wore masks and kept a safe distance. Nik completed the final papers on the computer while I was there and turned the screen so I could see everything. He is so knowledgeable about bankruptcy law and everything that could possibly be asked of me that I felt very safe. Eventually, everything is ready and you get your court appointment date with the Trustee. Again because of Covid-19, rather then go to the Trustee downtown, it was done by phone. This really scared me at first because I would be alone at home calling in and Nik would be at his office calling in at the same time. I wouldn't be able to communicate with him without everyone on the call hearing what was said. But I have to say everything went so smoothly that all my anxiety was unnecessary. I'll start off with a couple of thoughts about my experience. First, I HIGHLY recommend getting more than one opinion on your situation. I went to four law firms, three of which attempted to steer me (without too much listening or personal attention) into a Chapter 13 that would have probably ruined my finances for the rest of my life. Second, insist on a face-to-face meeting. If your law firm can't meet you personally about something that will impact your financial life this seriously, kiss them goodbye. It's a stressful process and you need to have someone personally in your corner. Third, don't worry about rates. They should all be charging the same, which is the court-allowed rate for your area. With all that said, Nik and Kristin crushed it in my case. They started off with an in-person meeting where they worked with us interactively, showing us our options and counseling us to get into our Chapter 7 where no other law office could. They were thorough, went through all the details to uncover the truth about out situation, and made us feel completely at ease. I was FINE writing them a check at the end of my first visit. They also showed me the roadmap-- step-by-step, what would happen and when it would happen, so I could track where I was in the process at any time. Following the first visit, their follow-up was perfect. We were in their office twice more to get the paperwork ready, complete the filings, and make sure everything went well. Again, they were detailed, persistent, and our advocates through the entire process. Kristin was most engaged with us at this point. On my court day, she met me there and provided representation. Now, when you get to the trustee hearing, you want things to go quickly and smoothly, but there was an unanticipated couple of questions that came up in mine, and they continued the hearing-- meaning that another hearing was scheduled a month later. I was almost palpitating with worry, but again, there they were to let me know it was a technicality and that they were watching the case. As it turned out, they were right to ease my mind-- we provided an additional piece of information and the next month's hearing was cancelled. Once the discharge letter came, they then followed up by notifying my creditors and sending me the materials I needed to follow up as well. I will not tell you that the process is easy. It is fraught with concern, one of the most difficult decisions that anyone can make. I was particularly concerned with the idea that bankruptcy was a symbol of defeat, and was sort of a necessary evil. They spoke about the other side of things, that the law provided bankruptcy as a financial tool for people just like me, and reminded me of my creditors' intransigence in negotiating with me for years. Nik and Kristin provided me with a great education on the process, were super-diligent about responding to questions and fears, and were amazing partners through this successful process. I could not be more enthusiastic in recommending them to anyone considering bankruptcy as an option.
