The New City hall is only 150 years old located in main plaza (Marienplatz). They had pride flags up for Pride month. There is a copy of the building in Brussels. It chimes on the hour. The mayor resides here with offices and public offices here. There's also a sculptor of the marriage of the Duke there. Fans are on the square cheering up to the sports athletes standing on the balcony. Surprisingly, the building is not that old, having been completed in 1905. The Neo-Gothic architectural style throws everyone off, making them think the building is much older, but no, it's new to the old world. Sure, you're here to see the Glockenspiel or the Christmas Market, but did you know there is an elevator you can take to the top of the hall? Facing the hall, look for the tourist info entry way (but don't enter it - this is just to get your bearings), and then look to your left - head to that first entrance on your left, through the wall, and look for a window booth on your left. You won't pay here, but you'll find the elevator. Take the elevator up to (I think) the 4th floor. There, for €2 or so, you can take yet another elevator up to the top of the building, where you'll find a spectacular view of the city. Enjoy, and enjoy Munich! read more

Absolutely stunning old town hall right smack in the middle of downtown Munich. The location is great since it's right off the Marienplatz underground station and it's in the middle of the pedestrian and shopping area .. and it's just a short walk away from the popular outdoor market. The architecture is beautiful and it's always great to see the lovely clock in action every hour. It's one of the signature places to Munich and I strongly recommend anyone who visits this beautiful city to definitely stop by, take some nice photos and take in all the lovely culture and shopping in this area. read more

Yes, this is a beautiful building that has a Glockenspiel that plays a couple of times a day. Everyone comes here to see it and yes you should too. It's crowded, so expect that. Everyone will be looking up at taking pictures of movies for the 10 minute show. There is an elevator inside the archway and for a few Euros, you can go up to the top of the tower and get a spectacular view of Munich. So much easier than taking the stairs over at St. Peter's church (did that too and the elevator is sooo much easier). I wouldn't want to be in the tower when the bells go off as I think you'd be too close. Why not a 5 star rating, well, it's a beautiful build in a city of beautiful buildings. read more

Such an amazing looking building. It is incredibly ornate, looks ancient (but really isn't), has the one-of-a-kind glockenspiel, and is on a very lively plaza full of people, shops, and restaurants. This place is amazing. It is the new town hall, although it is not that new. It's only named so because the old town hall still exists, having been rebuilt after being partially destroyed. Anyway, It is gorgeous. A noteworthy tip is to make sure you're outside it at either 11 am, noon, or 5 pm. The glockenspiel goes off at each of these times, and traditional Bavarian figurines dance. If you choose to go inside, you can pay something like €2 to go up to the top. It's a lot of walking, but it enables you to see the entire city of Munich from otherwise not seen views. read more

One of the most iconic places in Germany, which is right smack in the middle of Marienplatz. Everyone goes their to see the Glockenspiel play, but most leave WAY TOO EARLY. The Glockenspiel will make an initial noise and appear to be done, but you have to give it 5-10 mins to start the real show. (That insider tip is free ;-) ) There's nothing funnier than watching hundreds of tourists point their phones in the air, only to miss the very thing they came for by a few minutes. DON'T be one of those people. Stay and look around at the inside of the Rathaus and check out the nearby churches. There is so much to see in the vicinity which is why this place get 5 stars from me. This place will be a highlight of your trip to Munich, I promise :)! read more

The New Town Hall or New Rathaus is located in Marienplatz. This is the main plaza where locals and tourists flock. CSD parade was held around this area as well. This is a great place to start a walking tour of Munich. It's central location and access to public transportation makes a great meeting point. read more

While the Rathaus, per se, is nothing special other than the architecture, it is special for what it holds. Daily, crowds gather at 11, 12 and 5 to watch the mechanical Glockenspiel do its thing for about 15 minutes. While not all that entertaining, it is synonymous with Munich and a must-see. It is an engineering delight even if you get bored with it after the first few minutes. Take your video and photos for posterity while sipping coffee at one of the cafes. Additionally, you can pay a small fee to take an elevator to the top for some great views of Munich/photo ops then scribble some graffiti on the walls as generations have done before you. read more
