Australia has a pretty limited marketplace with regards to food shopping, but this locally owned…read moregrocer seems to be bringing something to the table. It has a bit of a warehouse feel, and some clearance sales lying around, but also a fairly respectable selection, including things that aren't all that easy to find; some nice vegetarian specialty items and a decent international section. They have ample fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of dried beans and grains, so we're not talking unhealthy food either. The location is reasonably convenient, near the hospital with ample bus access and a train station on the other side of the hospital. Some of the sale items will understandably be a tad sketch, buy you can certainly find some deals here.
As you'll see in my review of the Gabba Fruit Market, I'm a little bit attached to it. However, I…read morewas driving past Mother of All Fruits the other day and decided to check it out. I've gotta say, I was pretty impressed with the range and presentation of fruit and veg. Tucked just inside a Spar-owned shopping centre, Mother of All Fruits occupies a huge floor space. Most of this is taken up by rows of fresh produce, but there's also a section for packaged and frozen goods. The range of fruit and veg is great and their herbs come in huge bunches for around $2.95 each. There are also lots of "bucket" specials to be had where you get a reduced price for buying a large amount. For $30, I filled a green bag and walked out with a tray of 20 bowen mangoes. Pretty good value, especially the $10 tray of mangoes. Whilst extremely well organised and well presented, the only thing I don't like about this produce store is that it feels a little too much like a supermarket. I remain faithful to the Gabba Fruit Market, which has a more local feel to it and has a less hectic carpark.

Instead, you become sidetracked by all the lovely deli products on offer and before you know it, your basket is full of French cheese, home-style lemonade and artisan ice-cream. (Oh and there might be a cucumber or carrot someone in there.) Rock'n'Roll Market Place is a really fun place to shop if wanting to treat yourself to some nice, fancy foods, but not great if all you want to do is get your basics for a reasonable price. The fruit and veg there is a bit too pricey for me, but the quality is good and all the food is displayed well. Staff are extremely friendly, making this a pleasant place to shop and with a baker and butcher either side, it's conveniently placed. I would say it's a good place to shop for a weekend treat or special picnic.

I was first introduced to Kaitlyn's handmade chocolates when visiting Scrumptious Reads on James Street. You can still get a selection of them from there or order direct. It was after tasting her chocolates at SR that I had to order some for my colleagues who would be visiting Brisbane in a few weeks. The process of ordering directly with Kaitlyn was without trouble. In fact, the most troublesome part of the process was deciding the combination of flavours that would go into each box. There's currently 16 flavours to select from including the likes of a cold press coffee and dark chocolate, whiskey and dark chocolate, Guinness and dark chocolate, and the list goes on. In an age of convenience and mass-produced everything, these chocolates are a rare and welcome bite of something made from high quality ingredients and made with heart. Whether you are buying for yourself, for a gift or for an event - the beauty of being a custom chocolatier is that there is a solution individual to exactly what you need. And it's worth it. So, so worth it.

When I first lay eyes on the UQ Lolly shop, I felt like I was in a sugary heaven. The wall was…read morelined with self serve lolly dispensers filled with everything from jelly beans, to those banana lollies, chocolate sprinkles, and honeycomb. Venturing further, I found a section dedicated to American Candy. Spotting the Reese's Buttercups I could no longer resist and had to empty my wallet (even thought the import price makes them a little on the expensive side). They also stock Australian favourites like sherbet, Eucalyptus drops, Tim Tams and the like. But my oh my, it was the American Candy that had me hooked and returning to the Lolly Shop at the detriment of both my wallet and my wasteline. The shop also stocks a few basics, like cup noodles, chips, etc. and a range of drinks and ice-cream. As well as this they stock a few basic student needs like tissues, sunscreen, bug spray, panadol and the like. Situated in the Student Union Complex at the University of QLD St Lucia Campus, the Lolly shop is a favourite of many. They also have these amazing chocolate covered coffee beans. They uses to be in the same area as the rest of the self serve but after being ravaged by crazed studying students, you need to ask for them from behind the counter. There will be a line up here during busy periods (you can see the peaks between lectures as students stock up) but the lines move pretty quickly. As I have been writing this I have finished off two Reese's and think I will need to return to the Lolly Shop again in the near future.

On…read morethe way to the ferry, on the way from the ferry, on the way to lectures, on the way from lectures... Lollies serve several life purposes. You just can't go past getting a bag of clinkers and sitting at the bustop eating them until you hit a yellow or green one (why are they mostly always pink?). It's an excellent time taker-upperer. The bag o' lollies is also a great tool for making friends in lectures. "Hey, you want a chocolate coated strawberry?" (the ones who say "no", obviously have poor taste and aren't worthy of being your mate anyhow). They charge you per the kilogram for the sugar treats. You can usually walk out with a decent sugar pile for around $2-$5. You can also get handy things like cookies, gum, mi gorengs and other useful student supplies there. My only complaint might be that the staff are often super surly. They don't say hello or use their manners. Maybe they're suffering from a constant sugar crash. Who knows. All I know is that you have to suffer their service to get to the lollies, and we all know that nothing, NOTHING should stand in the way of a student and their brain food.
