My wife and I continue to use Safehouse Contracting for our home improvement needs. We've used them…read morefor a basement finish on our personal property, and for work on our rental/investment properties, including roof replacements, electrical repairs, attic insulation work, and grading. They have a great crew, and there was nothing we asked for in our basement finish that they weren't willing to do for us: from a hidden bookshelf doorway, to 12" x 12" cubbies along an entire wall, to tiered seating with special wiring for our home theater, and even removing walls we didn't want/need there anymore. They were very professional and highly skilled. The cost was affordable, and Joe Brose (one of the owners) was able to help us use our investment to finish the basement to the fullest. For example, we would ask for an added feature, and he would tell us how much it would cost. But sometimes the cost could be curbed by changing it slightly, to take out a feature or changing to materials that were less costly. I feel like what often happens is that builders just say, "A cubby costs this much" and that's it. Instead, Joe says, "If you use wood, it will be this much, but if you use PVC, it will be this much, and you have other options as well." When they had wrapped up the build, Joe walked us around and asked, for the sake of him improving his business, what we would do differently if we could do it over again. This made us feel comfortable with giving constructive feedback to him and his team. It was a great experience! I have recommended SafeHouse Contracting to several friends and family already (two of my brothers have used them for basement finishes and other projects), and will continue to do so going forward. They are worth getting a quote from, even if you build with someone else!

Right after they received the agreed to initial funds to start the project things started to go…read moredownhill. Lack of communication and responses Wrong material used on flooring- tile instead of wood refinish. 4 week promise date of completion turned into 10 weeks. The quality of workmanship was very poor New Hot water heater was wired incorrectly and not operable- fire hazard- which they would not correct leaving me to have to pay another electrician to rewrite correctly. Copper piping was installed incorrectly causing a flood from the upstairs in two different bathrooms ruining subfloors and new vanities. Two foreman were fired during this 10 weeks, three different plumbers, multiple electricians. You get the idea here- many more items I could go on with. I have a sale contract on this property, finally, and have items that need to be corrected to finalize the sale before closing. I was given a one year warranty on rehabbed items from Safehouse. I contacted Joe Brose from Safehouse to formally repair the listed items (sent via email with photos and detailing what needed to be completed). Initially I was told via email that they would schedule someone within a week and let me know the date and time. One week later no response. I called, texted and emailed to see when they were going to repair the agreed to items and no response. I even called multiple people within their company and they kept giving me the run around. Finally I got a hold of Joe Brose by phone and he was initially confrontational but at the end of the call he agreed to have someone at the property to correct the issues by today. This morning I received a text message and it is quoted below. "Matt, the list of things we would do is small. I'm glad it's that small. We can't come to fix it. Sorry. SHC is probably going out of business. Alot of shit has happened this year and good intentions don't pay the bills. Thanks and good luck." "You will have to sue us. Pathetic huh? You don't know the half of it. Good luck" The items needing corrected are not small items. Open junction boxes, exposed wiring, breakers tripping because the stove was wired incorrectly, the brand new hot water heater doesn't turn on due to the incorrect wire used and the incorrect breaker size installed. New garage doors were installed so poorly that they are coming off the track and won't close properly. Gas flex line installed to hvac unit that does not meet code.

In the meantime, our cast iron bar stools swiveled into the edge of the bar, causing chips in the main Formica countertop. It finally felt like the right time to make the change. Edan at Midwest Marble and Granite helped me select attractive elements like the sink, faucet, quartz material, and backsplash ceramic tile. Because of her experience as an interior decorator, I really valued her insights. On installation day, I was truly impressed by Jake, Carlos, and the team. They worked tirelessly to remove the old countertops and backsplash and to ensure the heavy new countertops were perfectly aligned and level. I had no idea how physically demanding this work could be. The next day, during backsplash installation, the same praise goes to Patrick, Frank, Eddie, and Austin. They spent hours bending over the counters, meticulously cutting, placing, and grouting ceramic tiles on four walls. That has to be backbreaking, especially for someone as tall as Frank! Midwest Marble and Granite transformed my kitchen with high-quality materials that were expertly installed in a timely and friendly manner. What more could I want?
