I visited Picasso's Moon as a quick detour before dinner, shortly before the 4pm closing time. When…read moreI lost track of time and stayed past the close, Debra, the owner, didn't comment on it or rush me; instead, she sat peacefully weaving in the back room. I left with three hanks of hand-spun and -dyed yarn after extensive deliberation. I knew for certain I would never step foot in a Jo-Ann again. The environment inside feels more like an eclectic knitter's home than a shop. Draping shawls hang from the ceilings, wrapped around the furniture, alongside a plethora of beautiful yarns of all colors. Debra's yarn comes in small batches, but yarn from the same batch is never the same--each skein is unique, some even featuring multiple materials bound together. The speckles of color bring life to the knitwear scattered around the room. Even with the diversity of the yarns, there's something cohesive about Debra's creations. I purchased three skeins of superwash merino yarn. They are not only beautiful, but are soft and stretchy as well, perfect for any project meant to be worn (or anything else, if I'm honest--they're fantastic.) The unique blends of colors pop in my stash, and even the solid is gorgeous. If you're a knitter in the Sarasota area--or even just visiting--Picasso's Moon is a must. You will be inspired by Debra's passion and creativity, and you'll pick up some wonderful materials at the same time.

I went into the shop several months ago and can't stop thinking about it! I now stalk Picasso's…read moreMoon on instagram because the textures, colors and owner are soooo amazing to see. The yarn is out of this world...so beautiful and the owner/knitter/dyer/weaver is an incredible artist. Debra is not only a spectacular talent but incredibly kind. Debra warped a loom while I was there just so I could see her super easy way to do it....who does that?? Really nice people, that's who. I don't live near by but I hope to get to Sarasota once a year and when I go, PM is on the list. In the meantime, Instagram. Amazing place and person.

I bought some sale yarn from Four Purls on-line. The price was good and triggered my curiosity…read moreabout the place. The pictures showed a HUGE shop. I was in Florida, visiting a friend, and talked her into making the 2 hour trip to Four Purls. Walking in, I was amazed! The place really is HUGE - the largest yarn shop I'v ever been in. The owners were really nice, explaining how the store in laid out with regard to the yarn weights. I asked about Cashmere yarn; they had it. Yak yarn; they had it. Yarns from countries that I didn't know produced yarns - Japan. They have their own private label yarn as well. This is a destination store if you're anywhere in Florida. If you use yarn in any way, you will love this place. I told my friend I'll be back to visit, if only to go back to Four Purls.

Every city I go to, I have to check out the yarn store. I went to Winter Haven eight years ago, but…read moredidn't know about Four Purls back then. I had no reasons to visit Winter Haven (nothing there), but I found myself on the way from Tampa to Orlando on a Sunday so I stopped in. It's rare for a LYS to be open seven days a week - but they are so that was a definite plus. There's a decent amount of free parking on the street and in a nearby small lot. The store has a great selection, although I found it to be eaten up by a ton of Emma's yarns (local, but having one wall of it takes away from other yarns they could stock in my opinion). For example, I wish they stocked Cascade 220 since no stores nearby stock it. Although there is a yarn for everyone, and a few interesting finds (Biscotti self-striping, multicolored roving, art yarns, crochet animal kits). I met Noelle, and she was very sweet in helping me out, and showed me around the shop since it was my first time there. Overall, there's a good range of yarns organized by weight (my preferred layout for a LYS), and is definitely one of the top yarn stores I've been to in the Southeast.
