When visitors come, they tell me my apartment always looks clean, neat, and tidy. "Your aide was here yesterday. Right?" And I say, "Yes. My aide is a Companions & Homemaker." First of all, my aide is prompt, ringing my doorbell ten minutes before the scheduled arrival time--ready to begin helping at 9am. * I depend on her to do what is impossible or very difficult for me to do. Using my vacuum cleaner, for example. Two hands are needed; I have use of one. * After my laundry is finished, she sorts and folds my articles of clothing so they fit compactly in my wardrobe furniture. * When we are at the supermarket for my weekly grocery shopping, she is quick to find the best prices and deals matching my grocery list. My aide has an eye for finding the freshest broccoli crown, tomatoes, salad greens, and other produce. By now, knowing what I keep in my pantry and refrigerator as staples, she reminds me of what else I may need. * My hard floors in the bathroom and kitchen are first swept and then sanitized with wet mop. * When I reach for the bath towel after showering the next day, the towel is a fresh new one that she had put out for me after taking the used one away for laundry. Sometimes after she leaves I feel like I'm living in a five-star hotel. * With her help, I am able to keep a scrapbook of photos and documents and prepare photos for framing that I exhibit. * We both enjoy cooking. We exchange recipes and ideas about them. * I think she has the mind of an engineer, for she can troubleshoot why certain mobility devices I have don't work right. It was my aide who discovered that my manual wheelchair had become hard for me to propel and hard for her to push--because a welded frame joint had come apart. I had not noticed that. She did. And I bought a new wheelchair. * The "companion part" she provides is very important. My aide and I can have lively conversations on many topics. Plus, she lets me "ventilate" from the stresses of living as a person with disabilities in a community that, 28 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, is still an inaccessible, unlivable community. I want everyone at Companions & Homemakers to know how much I appreciate my aide.
