One morning I woke with a blocked nose... I instinctively stuck my finger up a nostril (not something I usually do I might add) and it came out black. I was shocked and for a second there thought something was seriously wrong with me. Then I remembered I'd been burning candles in my room the night before. My little sister did the same thing not so long ago and I couldn't stop laughing at her reaction - more so because I'd done the same thing rather than a reaction to her distress. So I've known for a while that traditional paraffin candles are not so good for burning indoors as they produce a lot of soot - 90% more soot that soy wax based candles in fact. Soot in the lungs is not cool, nor is it cool when it coats the furniture and walls. I came across Lisa Bowen's natural soy candles - which she pours herself - at the Kirribilli markets. They smell beautiful - no synthetic scents here the essential oils are far more appealing and less invasive to the senses. I love the glass mosaic jars she pours the wax in. They're beautiful and sweet. Once the wax has melted down you could put tea lights in them. read more
