Outside Alumni Hall on the campus of Marian University is a brick relief sculpture of the "Nativity". The image is a classic depiction of the stable scene from the Bible.
The story about how the image was created is unlike any other art piece I've read about. The 16 x 16 foot image was originally built by assembling wet bricks (unfired) at the approximate depths that they would be to add dimension to the finished sculpture. While keeping the bricks wet by misting and covering in plastic at night, the artists had to carve the image. Once the carving was done, the bricks were removed and oven dried individually before being delivered to the final destination for reassembly and touch up. There is as much as 16" of depth in the finished work.
The work was designed and created by Jay Tschetter, Susan Horn, and Sten Eisentrager of Kansas City. They completed the work in 2015.
