This piece is located across from the Indiana State Museum and is in front of a Friday's. It is very eye catching and can be seen from far distances. It is titled Cardinal, which is the Indiana State bird. If you look at it closely, it does resemble an abstract cardinal with the tail pointing towards the zoo and the beak pointing towards the convention center. The cardinal is supposed to be perched on a tulip tree leaf, which happens to be the State's tree. It took me a while but I saw it. The cement base that the sculpture is laying on is in the shape of a tulip tree leaf
The sculpture is the work of Jeff Laramore and fabricated by Linel Signature of Mooresville. It took over 6 months to make and is made of aluminum and steel and painted bright cardinal red. It is massive, soaring over 35 ft high and 50 feet long. This is just one of three pieces of art paying tribute to the state. You will find art representing the state tree (the tulip poplar), and state flower (the peony) in the same plaza, the White Art Plaza, that cardinal is located.
It is located in a small valet round-about (It was not attended), so that is where I pulled in to, parked, got out and took a closer look. There are also some paid garages nearby if you are going to make a trip out of it.
Well, as is the case with most public art that I review, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. It is probably best to plan out additional stops and make it part of a larger itinerary to maximize your trip. read more
