Thank goodness for the Hawaiian Airlines direct flight to JFK, but I digress..... Jolie was very responsive via email when booking the tour and answering questions. We had no problem finding her in the Essex Market to begin our tour. She is personable and communicative and very easy to hang with. She was very creative in her tasting choices for the tour and did her best to tell us about what we were eating and to show us around her neighborhood. afternoon with her and learning a little about the history of the LES. The only reason I took of a star from this review is because I would have liked more history and culture and would have loved some jewish food on the tour. Otherwise, everything was awesome and Jolie is the perfect hostess. If you are thinking of taking this tour, please do. You will not be disappointed. Mahalo Jolie!

Reva's knowledge of the history of the city is vast and she is able to weave stories into the walk that bring that history into clearer focus. In addition, when she learned about some of our interests, she included examples and stories of those interests that made the tour personalized, unique and spontaneous. The route was well-planned and the walk was just the right distance and length of time. As a New Yorker, I was excited to learn so much about the place I live, and I imagine that the tour would be just as, or more enjoyable for visitors.

We had a chance to walk with the Mott Street Girls tour of Chinatown. Sponsored with support from…read moreCitizens Bank. Chloe and Jesse left us with anecdotes of growing up and coming to Chinatown with their families on weekends, taking piano lessons and becoming immersed in the culture and food that comes with being Chinese American in the New York sense. We met the owners of one of the haircutting emporiums on Doyer Street. You can get a haircut there for a mere $10! We also stopped on Mott Street at Golden Steamer Bakery for black bean buns and milk tea. The strength of Chinatown lies in the resilience of small businesses still recovering from COVID-19 and xenophobic conceptions. Chinatown had grown from a predominantly bachelor society up until the post WWII era when immigration was tightly constrained by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The tour wound up at the Crispy Bakery where we met the owner and his wife. We were treated to delicious Portuguese egg tarts.

Getting tickets is very easy. Just go online and purchase. When we arrived, the other people on tour started to arrive. This tour focused on the Chinese Exclusion Act. I admit, I didn't realize this was government enforced. We knew what it was by its name but needed to think about what it meant. Chloe Chan was our guide - very knowledgeable. The tour is about 90 minutes, and you learn a lot quickly. We started on Mott Street and walked around the older sections of Chinatown to give us an appreciation of their history. There were some very memorable moments. "Funeral Row" is a short street where one gang in the early 1900s had their headquarters on one end of the street and their rival gang on the other. We learned that people were warned not to go there because the gangs could start shooting at any time. We had the chance to walk into a few stores. The most intriguing one was one that was closed. A porcelain shop that has been around for four generations. They only carry very high-end products, which are beautiful in the window. The statues, the murals, and the art were indeed a highlight. There were six of us. Half of the group had Chinese heritage. I'm sure they knew the Chinese Exclusion Act, but each talked about how much they had learned. One person was visiting from Germany, and there was one more. When the tour ended, we walked around some more. We even went into an electronics store and got some great deals. And, of course, we had to eat at a local restaurant before leaving. The MSG Girls have other tours. I'm sure we'll take another next time we're in for a visit,
