Fascinating shop with a unique collection of art and books, but the owner was needlessly rude.

Of all the fabulous shops on Alberta Street - and there are oh so many, - this gallery/art shop is…read moremy favorite. There were so many art pieces there when I visited that I loved. Of course, on any given visit, there would be different local artist's works exhibited, and there's no guarantee that some or any works would appeal to me (or to anyone, on any given day. Art is so subjective, and the featured artists here change regularly). I was just lucky that I loved so many pieces of art when I visited. There are many things I loved about this gallery: they showcase a wide range of artistic works, from photographs to paintings to sculptures to glassworks to artisan hand-made jewelry and more. All the artists are local. All the art pieces are for sale. There is a huge range of prices for the works, so there really is something for any budget. (Note: when I was there, there were postcards and small prints with the featured photographer's works on them, and these were super reasonably priced). And best of all, you can often chat with the artists who are there! I loved the fact that the featured jewelry maker was there, and she talked about her inspirations and her artistic process. It was fascinating (and she was super talented - and nice to boot!). I love supporting local businesses and local artisans and artists, and this gallery checks all the boxes.

Ceramics, pottery, paintings, prints, photography, metal works, sculptures and greeting cards. Truly something for everyone across a spectrum of prices. What I particularly liked is that the art isn't all about PNW scenes. So many local galleries predominantly filled with local scenes and while stunning in real life, it may not necessarily go with everyone's style in their home. At Alberta Street Gallery, there are abstracts, nature scenes, people, birds, animals and more. Definitely worth a walk through any time you are in the area and also worthy as a destination. There is never any pressure to buy, but always helpful and informative service if needed. The art is always changing so stop back frequently.

It means big murals to look at, wall projections that are responsive to movement, sounds meant to augment what you see, and more. Two rooms (trampoline and ball pit) require shoes to be off, socks to be on, and stairs to be climbed, in order to access them. The rest of the place is flat concrete floors. They do also have a food and drink program that I have not personally gotten to enjoy. I recommend everyone who visits brings their sense of wonder and play. You may also want to dress confidently and snag some new photos of yourself. If neither of those (playfulness or selfies) are of interest, this may not be for you.

There's a "trampoline" that's more of a cushioned floor (probably due to safety and liability), a ball pit, snack/drink counter, and gift shop at the end. Lots of kids there and it feels a little awkward as an adult trying to balance enjoying your experience and watching out for the kids running around. Good for families to kill a an hour or two together.

The back room had a nudes exhibit with some paintings, sketches and photographs including a Matisse sketch which I enjoyed a lot. The front was the main exhibit. Christopher Rauschenberg, the son of famed artist Robert Rauschenberg ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rauschenberg). Christopher is a photographer and the photos being shown are a series of shots taken at various famous artists studios including Chuck Close and his father. I even notice a bottle that was painted by Roy Lichtenstein in one of the pictures. Really cool view into their worlds and very colorful pictures. This exhibit just opened recently so I believe it will be around for awhile if you get the urge to get over here. It also doesn't hurt that Christopher Rauschenberg is a Porlander and also founded Blue Sky Photography Gallery, which was my last stop of the day. Really nice work here and I plan to be back.

Most are mid career artists with solid resumes. More importantly, the art looks good. They have two major rooms, two simultaneous shows and a large back area. She has also developed personal relationships with Portland's major collectors. She has been the early champion of artists who later achieved great international careers, like Dinh Q Le and has been the Portland outlet for prints from the likes of John Baldassari, Donald Judd and Richard Serra. She has hosted spectacular shows in the past by Richard Misrach (who was first brought to Portland by Blue Sky Gallery). A great gallery and always a great education to see what is showing.

PDX Contemporary Art is doing that. This gallery specializes in quiet minimal work from Portland artists, American artists, and international artists. The work runs from maybe $300 into five figures. They select artists that have art career potential and nurture that. They have a few Whitney Biennial http://www.yelp.com/biz/whitney-museum-of-american-art-new-york artists. They signed them and promoted them before they showed in New York. They understand that artist and gallery careers are made outside Portland. They are the only Portland gallery that consistently brings work to art fairs where whale collectors and museum curators gather, like Art Basil Miami. They sell Portland artists there and through extensive collector relationships worldwide. If you are a collector, this is a good spot. It's always free to look, an essential part of developing your personal taste in art. The staff is chill, knowledgeable and helpful, Northwest -style, no haughty Chelsea little black dress syndrome. The gallery takes its work seriously, they invest in their artists and the work of their artists is a good investment, as well as being beautiful.

Very modern work similar to Rothko on one of the artists. Two others were more in the graphic design area (at least that's the way I interpreted the work. Some were a bit more literal, like a series of small paintings of flowers. The space itself is not that large so there really isn't a lot of time you can spend in here. Right next door was a place called Uproar which I though was just part of PDX, not sure but they had some instillation pieces and sculpture work by one artist. A nice little place, I look forward to seeing more work there.
