This college campus has intrigued me for a while. I read an article in Forbes last year that had…read morethe 25 colleges with the most bang for your buck, and Cal State Channel Islands made that list. I think the average student debt upon graduation was a few thousand dollars? I have since been trying to convince my high school age daughter, subtly of course, that this is the college for her! I came here once to see a play that was in the black box theater. That was at night time so I didn't get to check out the campus very much. But it was really pretty at night- there are a lot of strung lights around the small streets. Makes it seem very intimate and inviting. Another time, I came during the day just to drive around and check out the various buildings/layout. I believe this site was an old state hospital? You can still see some of the old buildings versus the new ones. It all comes together really nicely I think. I came for another visit last weekend & walked around the campus with my daughter. It was a Sunday and we were looking for a non-crowded place to get outdoors, as we are trying to practice social distancing while getting some fresh air. I'm happy to say my daughter really enjoyed walking around this campus. It's really open and there's plenty of parking, plenty of visibility for sure. My review doesn't include anything about the academia of the school from personal experience, although I have read great things about it and know a few people that have gone here and enjoyed their experience (they were all gainfully employed, as well). I'm glad to have this lovely campus near us to visit and enjoy walking around. Oh, and my pup loved her walk here as well. Keeping fingered crossed that my daughter gives it a deeper look come college time!

I've gone to this school 4 years now ok…read more You've probably read it a thousand times, but it REALLY is a beautiful school. I took an 8 am class and wasn't even upset about it because there is nothing like standing on that campus with few people around looking out on the harbor, and the water and the sky and its all really just too much. West Campus is my favorite side (sorry not sorry east campus) :3 I've only had ONE less than preferable professor amongst many others. (Ratemyprofessor.com became my best friend js) Classes are interesting, they offer a wide range, especially PE. I've had a fun in each course I've taken one way or another. Food in the Cafe on the west side of campus is sort of expensive Food in the Cafeteria on the east side is ok. Library: A+ and they have a computer/tutor center right across from it. Tutorssssss. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THE WONDERFUL TUTORING THIS SCHOOL HAS TO OFFER. They have a comm lab (its beautiful), math lab, tutoring center and other such things. The Administration staff: I have never had such a great deal of pain in my life, like trying to plot my academic path with the counselors at CC. However, I've been told that this is a common theme amongst colleges so I'll just say "Dude prepare for frustration" and leave it at that. -Financial Aid office, always nice and helpful. -If you need DSPS, which is a service offered to those who need special amenities or have some sort of disorder that hurts your academics (I have bad anxiety) this is such an amazing program. Ex: I can take my test in a different room and be given more time. Eases my anxiety so much! Parking. The amount of parking here is insane, but the amount of people that need that parking is of greater insanity. between the hours of 9:30-11:30 parking is the fevered dream of a madman. You can find it sure, but be prepared to fall quickly to levels of desperation you never dreamed possible. -looping around a lot over and over again -sitting in a lot waiting for someone to leave -stalking people by driving slowly behind them, with your fingers tightly crossed that they're leaving -parking very far from where you need to actually be. Well that's all I have to offer. I'm really sad to be leaving here. It's beautiful ok. c:

Now you can only have a counselor appointment once a month, which makes it extremely challenging for students who have questions or challenges. The only support is a counselor for most things, but too bad. You better pack in all your questions and future questions in your 30 minute once a month session. There's lot of bullying that i've seen on campus, and the staff do nothing about it. As well as much drug use and people smoking weed on campus. If you need to withdraw from a class due to pregnancy or other circumstances, they will not take it off your record unless you PAY TO TAKE MORE CLASSES. Again - they just care about money and the tuition is abnormally high for a community college.

Some of the classrooms are in the same funky 1970s buildings, but the art/design classroom has updated computers and huge monitors. The library building has cool architecture and a vast seating area with computers. The online registration process is challenging (you need a Master's degree to figure it out), but after an hour and a call to the helpline which confirmed that the error glitch would require me to re-input all my data again, I was able to register. The open hours for the store and registration are tricky too, so check online before venturing over. The teachers are as cool as I remembered them, so it has been rather fun revisiting some of my college memories. I even find parking spots on Loma Vista like I used to, and they will still ticket you in the permit parking lots too.

A young friend of mine, a recent convert to Catholicism, went here and I was absolutely horrified at her stories. To give one small example, it is required that all of the students sit and listen to all of their teachers talking about them with no filter. The criticism is just complete spiritual putdowns to absolutely crush the spirit. No mercy, no kindness. She was literally crying and they didn't stop. It's a place where you are broken down. All of the alumni look alike, which says a lot. Another thing people should know is that neither Catherine of Aragon nor Queen Victoria would pass the modesty standard. I am not joking. any neckline more than two fingers under the collarbone is considered slutty. The culture is so utterly out of touch and sets such an impossible standard that the alumni cannot function outside of the subculture, mostly because they are so full of themselves. The library provides free books and iPads for students. ‼However, opinions about the teachers vary. I have never encountered a worse teacher than German Bermudez! He is very arrogant, unfriendly, and the atmosphere in his class is always tense! He speaks with a strong Latin accent, and he never explains new words. He always speaks quickly, and he gives strict deadlines for homework that you can't complete (on an iPad), which other teachers don't do. As I was informed, he used to be a student and now he's a tutor, which is why he has a sense of grandeur. I am very disappointed that the college doesn't have control over who they hire... Additionally, I would like to recognize the most excellent teacher in this college, Patricia Viveros! She always smiles, jokes with her students, and is very helpful in explaining new words!‍‍ Her lessons are easy and fun, and the atmosphere is friendly! She is a great teacher with a lot of experience and a kind heart! Her teaching methods make it easy to understand and learn English! I would recommend her as the best teacher in California!

There is no way I'd have gotten this job without the knowledge of the two excellent instructors in the class, Scott and Dennis, who have a wealth of experience when it comes to AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Revitt. My favorite aspect of the school is that you're treated like an adult. I'm in my mid-30's and haven't attended classes of any sort since my early 20's as I'm not a fan of the 'typical' classroom environment. Here you're treated respectfully and with and understanding that there are other things going on in your life while you're attending class practically full time(M-F, 8-4). It's a professional environment without feeling stuffy. I've been in the work force for 15+ years and the school is a nice proxy for what a working environment might feel like. Another great aspect of this school is that they want you to get a job and will fall over themselves to help you get there. I think I interview very well and have good resume making skills, but the experts at the school who help you when you're in the final stretch with these things were immensely helpful in making me feel prepared for the interviews I went to. I've heard other graduates say the same. All the staff here are very supportive and if you're looking for a fresh start and a new career, I really can't recommend VACE enough. it was a life changing positive experience for me and I'm sure it will be for you too.

The resources provided in her program (medical assisting) we're not sound pedagogically, not androgogically. It is a very self paced program with little scaffolding. I could not get ahold 9f the placement person to ask about internships and job placement. There were very few students in the building during the two weeks of her trial. Did theyattend 8n the morning or did few come? The website is not very descriptive and cites 100% placement rate. That seems unlikely, tho I suppose possible. It does cost much less to attend this program than other local for-profit medical assisting programs, but I think you need to be a much more sophisticated learner than most high school grads without work or life experience. ((I find it truly abhorrent to charge as much as these programs do to enter a relatively low-paying occupation. There is a two week trial period, which is good. Unfortunately, when it looked like my mentee was going to struggle with the pace of the program, they just wrote her off and told her not to return until they contacted her and have not done so for over two months since then. To be fair, I'm going by her side of things ,but I have no reason to believe she misrepresented her experience with me. I was very disappointed for her.
