National Night Out is an annual event hosted by police departments to provide outreach to their communities. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the event began in 1984 with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their houses. The event has since grown to more than 38 million people in more than 16,000 towns across the United States. During the Margate event thousands of people came out to learn about the services provided by the police as well as other law enforcement agencies.
A popular event highlight is getting to tour law enforcement and first responder vehicles. Fire trucks, a prison bus, an F.B.I. command center and even a helicopter were available for people to climb aboard. There were informational tables set up for the F.B.I, U.S. Custom and Border Protection, Florida Department of Transportation, police, fire department, Broward Sheriff, Marines, Coast Guard, Navy, Army, Broward County Emergency Command Control and Communications, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Free hot dogs, soda, popcorn, and snow cones were given out along with many other promotional items like lanyards, bags, and pens. A rock climbing wall and several inflatable bounce houses were set up for the kids. Live entertainment was provided on a stage.
This was my first time attending the event. I was impressed with how much there was to do and see. Aside from learning about law enforcement it is just a great event to get out and mingle with your neighbors. With everything that is happening in our world it is always worthwhile to bring a neighborhood together especially if it is to see all of the resources our community has to ensure our safety. read more
