It's pet friendly and a great place to come alone, or with friends and or family. Where else can you have a picnic as well as shop nearby? I also highly recommend stopping into the Saratoga History Museum located in the Canfield Casino right inside the park. It's a very interesting place to spend an hour or so. The exhibits begin with the Revolutionary War (focusing on Burgoyne's invasion) and continuing clockwise take you through Vietnam. It also has an impressive Naval exhibit. I believe I was there for more than two hours. The exhibits included placards explaining what you are viewing. Of course the central theme is NYS's connections to each war, particularly the contributions of the famed NYS National Guard. Many of the relics were either made in NYS or presented to the museum by NYS veterans. If you admire military weaponry this is the place to visit.

This weekend, I finally took my own advice and toured the museum for the first time in years. The Sept. 11th exhibit is among the current features marking the 25th anniversary of the terror attacks. Since I was there to watch the Twin Towers fall in lower Manhattan, I found it difficult emotionally to walk through the exhibit though somehow it was also cathartic. There were interesting exhibits of New York birds, mammals and minerals. I also enjoyed seeing the dinosaurs exhibit and the so called, "Cohoes Mastodon," which was unearthed near the Cohoes Fall. I had so much fun riding the antique carousel with many families. The museum is even open on Sundays. Admission is free with suggested donations. The staff is wonderfully helpful. The attendees are nice and friendly, too.

The museum was intimate, but the content was very powerful! During our particular visit the museum had contemporary art pieces featured by tribal residents to share opinions about how the confederacy has been shaped throughout time. For those that are not aware of the history can find it "boring", but for those reconnecting to indigenous heritage it is so important to listen to and see the voices of these communities. Many pieces had official statements with their art and it was just as moving as the art displayed. One sees the continuing greed outside and surprisingly inside the tribal communities. Through the displayed art one sees the continuation of colonization and continued removal of native land from its people. Reading the statements one can feel the frustration and empathize with its peoples. Moving toward the stairs leading to the younger generation appeal, me and my children learned of how the US and history has used indigenous culture. From the fictional story of Pocahontas and her "choice" to leave the VA to Looney Tunes portrayal of cowboys and Indians. There is a display of an indigenous women that helped convert others to Christianity that was very worthy of some time spent learning (forgot her name). Downstairs was absolutely aimed for the younger generation. My kiddo (8yr) spent time putting together learning puzzles, tracing nature on paper and watching the video that shows age appropriate examples of cultural appropriations that continue to happen at the advantage of large corporations. Since that video, we as a family have changed some of our shopping trends and have a better appreciation for our indigenous kin. The walking trails were easy on the little feet in my family and had some beautiful creeks (can't attach video). Finally!! The Oneida social dancers were fantastic, intimate and so inviting! It's definitely worth a trip of you're in the area or combine it with a visit to Howe Caverns in the same area. They have an extensive collection of arrowheads and some beautiful and moving art and history well worth studying. Nice that they have a lot of activities and space for kids and the community. I was expecting a bit larger museum but am still glad I checked it out.

I brought my two kids here and as usual was worried about what the baby, who is 1 year old, would want to do or try to get into since this is a museum. The very friendly woman at the desk was so encouraging of letting the baby explore and touch everything. This museum is very educational but kids can touch and play with everything. It's not one of those museums where you are constantly reminding your kids not to touch something. There are exhibits representing many different places and cultures, and the kids can play in all of them. There is a Central American kitchen with items stocked in the kitchen that would commonly be found in that region. There is a Japanese tea house, a Parisian cafe, a West African market (my personal favorite as there are so many fruits and vegetables that one wouldn't see here and cards describing what each plant is), a rainforest where you can learn about how chocolate is made and hold and smell a real cocoa pod. Such a cool place. If we lived closer, I'd take the kids every weekend. Still plan on going multiple times a year. It's just such a unique place.
