Being that they are the only proper newsagents in the village and they have a good selection of sweets and canned goods, there's not much wrong with the Village News. Their collections of magazines is especially impressive, with a range so extensive it nearly puts WH Smiths to shame. One thing that is a bit annoying though is that all the sweets are just in front of the desk where you pay for everything, so choosing which sweets you want becomes somewhat of a palaver. There's nothing worse than having someone watch as you umm and ah over whether you should buy a Boost even though it's 57p or just play it safe and go with the tried and trusted Mars Bar at 40p. Aside from that though, this newsagents ticks all the boxes. They also have a container sat outside with different sized balls in, come rain or shine, which can be especially handy on nice days when the kids are outside. Not so much when it's pissing it down though.

It's important to support the shop for that reason alone - although you can buy newspapers and magazines at Waitrose, Marks and Spencer and even Caffe Nero it's important to keep these places going. After all where else in the local area are you going to be able to get hold of a copy of Angling World or Tattoos Today? Nowhere, that's where. They do sell beach goods - inflatable balls, buckets and spades, that sort of thing - which are always indispensible should you find yourself heading down to Formby beach with youngsters in tow. They are also the only place for miles around that does loose Lions Sports Mixtures and Midget Gems which are like my very own version of crack cocaine.

They have a good range of collectables as well as reasonably priced jewellery. We have bought two Christening items and each came well presented with and offer for free engraving, because we were buying more than one item they also knocked a bit off the price. Last Christmas i wanted a ring for my partner but they didn't really have anything i had in mind. Anyway the lady who was serving me was very helpful. She showed me a plain ring and explained to me that i could get it sent away to be engraved and have a diamond added to it. I wasn't sure at first but she managed to convince me in the end! When the ring came back it was absolutely gorgeous and looked better than what i had imagined it would. I don't think i mentioned that this was two weeks before Christmas. The lady went the extra mile to make sure i would have it in time for Christmas and she rung me frequently to let me know how the ring was getting on. I will defiantly come here again for any jewellery. I had a great customer experience and would recommend this shop to everybody!

They sell magazines, confectionary and cigaretes. I think the staff in here are lovely and very helpful. The lady who works there did a lucky dip for me the other week and i won a tenner i think shes my lucky charm! :) The only bad thing about this shop is that it is very VERY small. It only fits about 3 people in at a time! Quite often they have offers on their magazines chocolates. I like to get a good bargain from here. Also they have just started selling wispas again so i ithink im guna stock up!

They stock the following types of jewellery:- precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) precious metals set with precious or semi-precious stones precious metals set with lab grown stones (i.e. cz or diamonique) costume jewellery (this is mostly on display in the stores rather than the display walk way) men's metal jewellery (stainless steel) All items are clearly labelled as to exactly what they are and what they are made of. There are no mistakes here. They stock items to suit every pocket. Items start from 1.99 (silver stud earrings) and range upto a few thousand (diamond eternity ring). The staff are friendly and helpful and once you've chosen you item you go in and the staff will bring the item to the counter to let you see it. If you are happy with the item and wish to purchase it you will be asked if you wish to buy the gift box. This is how they keep their prices so low, i.e. if you are buying a ring, the ring box does not automatically come with it. Gift boxes start from £1.50 and they also do gift bags too which means if you were buying for Christmas you can have it all sorted and wrapped in one trip. Not everyone likes the fact that you don't get the gift box with your item automatically but I think its a good idea as it means if you were choosing somethign for yourself you might not necessarily need a box. The staff are friendly and helpful and their stuff is fantastic quality. This is a perfect place for special items for presents at a low cost.

If you cant find it here or if John cant get it for you then it either doesn't exist or its not worth having! The shop offers a delivery service for newspapers (i did once work there as a newspaper boy) or he will order in for you and pick up on your way past and get some of the proper sweets out of the jars mmmmm. The shelves are always full no matter what time of year it is so if its something for a kids birthday prezzie or a witches hat for halloween pop in suprise yourself and support a great local independant shop!
