Growing into adulthood is a struggle for anyone, and I was having a rough time. You meet people that care, and then you meet people that both care and can engage you. The latter is Joan Normandy-Dohlberg. Not only did Joan make me feel comfortable & safe to express my feelings (& share my deepest darkest,) but she engaged me in a way I knew I was heard & felt I could accomplish more & do better for myself- no judgment, no falsity. She helped me every step of the way, ESPECIALLY when I was in my own way. As someone who's seen a lot of therapists in the greater Burke/DMV area, I want to be clear that I am leaving this review as a GLOWING review of Ms. Dr. Joan Normandy-Dolberg-- and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better therapist than her.

She is very knowledgeable and uses different methods to help you cope and understand your feelings and so you can process a painful past and not let it impinge on the rest of your life. She is a great listener but unlike another therapist I had in the past, she doesn't just listen and tell you its "normal", she actually discusses how it's affecting you and ways to lessen it's impact on your mental health. She uses EMDR, a therapy that helped me SO much by lessening the pain of past trauma and now the remembrances of these events is much more infrequent and does not cause high levels of anxiety. You can ask my husband, my life has vastly improved since I started seeing Joan. Karen, her office manager, is very sweet and friendly and it is just such a great environment. If you are in need of a genuine, caring and highly qualified counselor, I highly recommend Joan.

Her caring style and warm personality immediately made me feel welcome. I looked forward to seeing her because she helped me discover things about myself that allowed me to live a more balanced life. She would challenge me, and allow me to think of things in other ways, which helped me have better and more healthy perspectives on many situations. After every session I had with her I left feeling lighter and enlightened. I whole-heartedly recommend her to anyone who has concerns about themselves as individuals or their relationships.

I was able to come to terms with some difficult changes I needed to make, and then follow through to actually make them. I made more progress with Frances than with most of the psychologists and psychiatrists I've seen in the past. She treated me for ADD and depression.

My consultation meeting with Hannah was eye opening. She carefully explained the methods of EMDR and made me feel comfortable speaking about my feelings and fears. Hannah has extensive knowledge and experience with EMDR, and it was clearly reflected in my results. After just a couple sessions we were able to release anxiety from those traumatic events, and I no longer could feel the pressure in my chest of fear. My self-esteem and confidence has much improved, and my anxiety has lessened dramatically. I feel like a stronger and more capable individual. I am so thankful to have met Hannah. She is an excellent EMDR therapist and I highly recommend her services.

I'm so impressed with how skillfully Hannah incorporates several therapeutic approaches into our work. Also how well she balances so many aspects of therapy, like guiding the patient vs following the patient's lead; and fostering a close connection while maintaining healthy professional boundaries. I always feel seen, heard, and understood, and I feel so lucky to have her help managing trauma but also with "smaller" things like connection and boundaries, confidence, and emotional resilience.

I write to inform former, past, and future clients that they may or may not be correctly diagnosed…read more Before I explain, I want to say the Dr Itoro was an accomodating and nice lady. She tried her best to meet my needs while I was 3 hours away for college. For that reason, I was grateful. However, I was misdiagnosed as Bipolar by Dr Itoro. During the 1.5 years I was treated, I chose to believe the diagnosis because I was desperate to return to my original self. I followed every guideline and suggestion. Took every pill, even when I felt emotionally worse, gained 30 lbs in 2 months, sickly, yeast infections, and my flawless skin turned cystic (rolling scars to this day). In an attempt to be a 5 star patient, I joined a Bipolar support group. It was during those weekly sessions that I realized, I was unlike the 30 regular attendants. So much so, the group leaders and the group consistenly inquired about my diagnosis, believing I was NOT bipolar. From there, I sought out other professional opinions. Not two, three, or four, but seven! Each and every one told me to immediately stop my medication for it was doing more damage than good. 1 month after stopping all medication, the depressive cloud faded, acne cleared, chronic sickness haulted, and I began to lose weight without trying. I felt balance the best I could be for having Post Traumatic Stress (my REAL problem which is in a good place now). A few months after stopping the medication, I tried to schedule an appointment with Dr Itoro to explain what happened, and ask questions. Her response was to find a new doctor since I did not see her during the last 3 months.... Lesson learned- seek mutiple opinions before signing up to prescription drugs. It will be three years come February since I stopped all medications prescribed by her (AND from anyone else). I STILL have reactions from those drugs.

I've had four psychiatrists and two therapists since I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 1999…read more Dr. Ibia is by orders of magnitude the best psychiatrist I've ever had. She's a psychiatrist, not a therapist, but she talks to me! And she listens! She has told me things about the meds I've been on for 16 years that I never learned in the 12 years I was on them before beginning to work with her - about interactions with OTC drugs and possible long-term side-effects - and she is extremely diligent about monitoring for these effects via asking questions and ordering regular blood tests. Dr. Ibia asks incisive questions about my life to determine whether anything medically significant is going on, while at the same time being warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental. Her stated goal is to keep me in a place where my symptoms are being managed - not just where I'm surviving them - and she strikes what I perceive to be an excellent balance in being willing to "tweak" my meds to deal with changes in my mental health, without reaching for drugs as a solution to everything. She is competent and caring and extremely concerned that I am getting the most helpful care possible. Possibly the best doctor - not just psychiatrist - I've ever had.
