Greenhearts Family Farm - Fresh picked produce!

I'd love to be able to purchase a whole year at a time, especially because I know that that would be a help to their operation. The farm is so much fun and so beautiful. I love when CSA members are invited to pick fruits, veggies, and flowers. They also have a place for kids to play! My only gripe is that when I have tried to get in touch by email I have only received a response about 30% of the time.

I gave the Greenhearts CSA a try and overall, it was solid. They gave me a box of strawberries as a…read morewelcome gift plus another in that week's produce box. Also included blueberries, 2 green peppers, an onion, celery, snap peas, mini romaine lettuce (little gem), romanesco, spinach, and Nantes carrots. Their CSA model is a bit different than others I've tried. Rather than giving you everything from their farm, they source from different local farms. They also deliver which is probably why the price is a bit higher ($44 I think). And the produce seems to be a bit more polished. I mean the carrots and spinach still had dirt, the produce seemed fresh, it clearly still came from a farm. But it was like a smaller cut bunch of spinach tied together, not a huge more wild bunch mostly left alone. Strawberries and blueberries were in plastic boxes. I think the produce visually looked better (and the strawberries were noticeably more fragrant) than other CSA boxes which makes sense. These farms are producing them for Greenhearts which is essentially a distributor or buyer or something so aesthetics playing a bigger role than a farm selling you whatever they have directly makes sense. The produce was all good. But it kind of felt like stuff I could just get from a farmers market or something. The exceptions were maybe the romanesco - very beautiful - and carrots - I don't see the Nantes variety that often in stores and the roasted carrot dish I made was truly exceptional and the sweet carrots were the star. For me, I think I prefer the single farm model more and I don't mind picking up my produce. Given the coordination they have to do and the delivery aspect, I do think the price is probably fair though the quantities are generally pretty moderate. There's also fewer add on options than other CSA models if you care about that. Overall it was a solid box but I did wish there was more of a few items and you do pay a premium for the delivery and the visually nice produce.

I appreciated how Veggielution has posted videos showing how and where to enter the property. Staff explained the instructions thoroughly and handed out gloves. It was a hot day so I was thankful that the event was under a shed and the food packing itself was straightforward and not very strenuous. We filled the boxes with fruits and vegetables assembly line style and then stacked them all up. With our big group, we finished packing 725 produce boxes in about 90 minutes. Some of us also helped remove weeds around the shed using hands + shovels. At the end, one of the employees gave us a guided tour of the farm which was super fun! He talked about the different events they host - on Saturdays there is a Farmer's Market and youth garden for little kids. The farm is huge, so it was cool to look around and learn about their farming practices. Also learned that they offer low-cost fruits and vegetables to the community! Staff was very friendly and efficient! They provided us with all the necessary tools. There were some leftover fruits and vegetables, and volunteers were allowed to take them home which was super nice! Overall, I would definitely volunteer at Veggielution again. Their website is up to date with helpful information which makes the whole volunteer process very easy to navigate. They also host interesting community events that I would recommend checking out!

When Two Small Farms reorganized, I stuck with my usual pickup spot, which went to High Ground Organics. I was a little nervous. I'd been getting Mariquita Mystery Boxes all winter, so I knew that I liked what Mariquita alone produces. But what about High Ground? My worries were for nothing. The produce is as high quality and varied as I could have hoped.

Site doesn't offer any bug spray, but maybe should? As far as Covid safety, only thing is a reservation system which limits attendees. About 8-9 rows so plenty of space to spread out, but it's self regulated. Some parents corral their Children and others don't so you're at mercy of others, or have to speak up. We also got chased down rows by an oblivious sneezing and coughing man who prob had allergies and wore a mask... No one from farm is monitoring people once in. No questions or temp checks for admittance, though email prob asks that you mind it. Also: expensive! Expect to pay about $20-25/gallon baggie, which holds about 3-4 pounds. Blueberries are delish. Ticks are not so be prepared.
