When I arrived weary from the long road I'd traversed from San Francisco to São Paulo I was met…read moremostly with indifference at the front desk and told there wouldn't be rooms until closer to 12:00. (I get it, the hour was early and it was Sunday morning.) Resigned to my fate I made myself a bed in the lobby with my backpack and a rolled sweatshirt and curled up for a little shuteye. After a few hours passed I noticed people checking in and went back up to the desk to claim a room key. It would have been nice of the front desk dude I spoke to upon arrival to have alerted me that a room was available but alas... The room itself was spacious enough with a simple desk and a big bed. The sheets were a tad on the scratchy side but my major beef was with the wifi. Spotty at best, it made getting work done here pretty challenging at times. If breakfast is included in your rate, take it. You'll find an assortment of fruit, cereal and some cooked items. I mostly subsisted on pão de queijo and infused water after finding most of the rest of the items rather unappealing. My colleagues ate more heartily than I did so I suspect most people will find something they like. Location is Tryp Paulista's main redeeming quality. It's very central, easy to get a cab and it's across the street from Bella Paulista which is open 24/7 (try the soup buffet!) and has a small grocery inside. Tryp Paulista mostly got the job done for me on my last trip to São Paulo. It's not a place I'd be excited to head back to but I might stay there again if the price was reasonable mostly because of there it's proximity to lots of other great spots in the city. In short, this hotel is A-OK.

Based on only the room and the hotel's common areas, I'd give TRYP Paulista 3.5 stars, but I'm…read morebumping it up to 4 stars based on the convenience, fun and safety of the surrounding neighborhood. First, the popular Avenue Paulista is only 1 block away, with plenty of stores and restaurants, and a lovely street fair on Sundays, when they shut the street down to traffic. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants on the smaller streets surrounding the hotel, especially Rua Augusta. Our favorite bar, though, turned out to be the small Bee.W, which is connected to the hostel on the same street as TRYP, a half block away. Friendly service, and good food for snacking! (Tell the bartender hello!) Also, there is a great little market on the corner next to the hotel called Bella Paulista, which is a great spot to stock up on bottled water, beer and snacks for the room, as well as grab brunch or lunch at the on-site restaurant, or put together a picnic lunch for later. There are a couple of subway stops within walking distance of the hotel, and most important of all, the neighborhood itself is safe to walk in. And note, evidently the hotel has smaller rooms than the ones my friends and I stayed in, but the upgrade fee is so small, I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading. Our room had a nice sized bathroom, a desk and a small refrigerator and tea kettle. Also of note, the front desk staff speaks English, and were all very friendly and helpful. All in all, I was very pleased with this hotel, and would definitely stay there again, next time I'm in Sao Paulo.
