I attempted some French, and though completely butchering everything he still told us in English my French was good. I laughed at the obvious white lie, but I appreciated the friendliness. 0. Amuse Bouch of salad and miso soup (complimentary): They started us with a bowl of miso soup and salad. The miso soup definitely had a French spin to it--didn't taste like your typical traditional miso soup. Was interesting. I don't remember how the salad tasted except that it was okay, but I appreciated the unique presentation where it was served in a large piece of bamboo. 5/10 1. Maki au Foie Gras par 6 6,50 EUR: 6 pieces of foie gras sushi roll. So, honestly, it wasn't the greatest combination. I think the softness and silkiness of the foie gras just made the rice texture feel weird in your mouth. But, had to try it--I mean, where else are you gonna get foie gras sushi!? 5/10. 2. Tempura de Crevette au Fromage 6,20 EUR: So, this is shrimp tempura with some rice. The tempura was different than your standard American-style tempura (ultra light) or the way they have it in Japan (extremely crispy and crunchy), but I forgot exactly how. But it certainly was different. Otherwise, tastes good, but somewhat plain. 5/10. 3. Saumon, avocat, fromage Sushi Flocon par 6 6,50 EUR: Salmon, avocado, cheese sushi. You've probably had similar before. Nothing special here. 5/10. 4. Wakame salade d'algues au concombre 6,20 EUR: Sorry, do not remember this at all. 5. Salade de poulet 8,50 EUR: Sorry, again, cannot recall. 6. Boule de sushi, Magret de canard fume au foie gras 3,00 EUR: This was probably the best sushi we had there. It's duck on top of foie gras sushi. For some reason this was a better pairing than the plain Maki au Foie Gras. I liked it. If you get any sushi here, get this. 7/10. 7. unknown ice cream sundae dessert: I just remember it was good, but sorry not much else. 6/10. So, no, the food wasn't spectacular. I certainly don't recommend you to make a special trip here if you have other choices. But we didn't. And this place did save our night. If you're curious what French sushi tastes like, well, this place would probably satisfy your curiosity. I read a few reviews saying this is as good as French sushi gets, so, again if you're craving something different from stuffing yourself with all the awesome traditional French food, this would be good break. Since the closest authentic ramen shop according to Google Maps is Naruto in Aix-en-Provence, Wafu should consider making a legitimate ramen. It would be unique to the immediate area since there seems to be a fair amount of traditional Japanese restaurants including sushi shops. Avignon deserves a true ramen shop, not something masquerading as one. In the meantime, if you have the time and the ease of traveling to Aix-en-Provence, I highly recommend going to Naruto. Their ramen is excellent especially for ramen offered outside of Japan.

Naruto was there because they make an excellent ramen. I highly recommend ordering any of them. They are on the mark authentic to what you can get in Japan. While I wasn't able to try any of their other dishes, I highly suspect they are on par with their ramen as Naruto is always packed. From the moment they open, all the tables are filled with customers. It doesn't matter what day of the week nor time of day. They are busy, busy, busy. The owner is a fun character, who enjoys being silly. He clearly takes preparing his meals seriously though. Check out his business cards. They will make you smile. He's something of a local celebrity. And you can see this is true fore he has that certain charisma that draws you into his world.

Kobushi is a cute little sushi restaurant with a French twist. The restaurant is owned and seemed to be completely run by a very nice woman named Najette (I may have spelled that incorrect). She was born in Avignon, but learned to make sushi in Marseille. She mentioned she will be traveling to Japan in October to learn even more (not sure if that will impact the restaurant being open). While we were there, she took the orders, made the food, and did the dishes - all with a smile and warmness about her! To start, we had a lovely rose wine (for just 16 euro) and miso soup. The miso was a very generous portion. We were brought a sample of torched salmon nigiri which was quite tasty. For dinner, my husband and I ordered Plateau France - Japon. This came with 5 different rolls, most with a French twist, such as foie gras! This combo also came with a traditional California roll for the less adventurous foodie. While I wouldn't say this was the best sushi I've ever tasted, I certainly appreciated the creativity behind the menu. The ambiance in Kobushi is very hip and modern, as well as romantic. There is some cool track lighting, and soft music playing as well. If you are looking to venture off the standard French menus, and a fan of sushi I would definitely recommend Kobushi. Since it is so small I would definitely call ahead for a reservation.

Today's soup of the day was "curry soup," which was interesting, since Japanese curry isn't soup. It was basically watered down curry with lots of vegetables. The rice ball had the option of fish, vegetable, and maybe a meat? The rice had seasoning on it. (It was cold when I got it, so I dunked the rice into the "curry soup" to make it into curry.) The seasonal salad was very interesting as well. I had to keep on looking down at the salad as I ate it, because it didn't taste at all like what I expected. Takoyaki was what you'd expect from takoyaki. Very wet inside though, so if you aren't a fan of wet batter texture, is skip it. We also ordered ramen, which wasn't on the menu. It was also interesting, because it looked like shoyu ramen, but it had a very deep flavor. And the pork didn't seem like chashu. Overall, I accept the tastes as a "spin" on Japanese food that I've grown up with, and enjoyed them.
