I was here to pick up my friend and her kids to go for a day out. The station is small, so easy to get around. There is plenty of free parking spaces behind the station. read more

This is a small train station that can often be surprisingly busy thanks to tourists coming and…read moregoing to Aviemore for winter sports and mountain biking. There are two platforms, a ticket office and a waiting room. The platforms are partially covered and there are a few benches to sit at. It's a station that could really benefit from a cafe and it's a bit surprising to see an estate agent taking up the space I'd expect a cafe to be in. As small as the station is, I'm sure there are enough travellers for a small cafe to be profitable. Fortunately, there are a cafes and bars not too far away - about a five minute walk if you turn right when you leave the station. If you have a long wait I'd suggest stopping at one of those rather than in the waiting room; it's warm enough and much better than waiting on the platform, but it's not very big and the seats aren't especially comfortable. There is, however, free WiFi.

The fish & chips is the best I have had anywhere, and the portions are enormous - I got two huge pieces of battered haddock that filled the plate to such an extent that I could barely see the chips lurking underneath. I'm not kidding! The specials are also great and well above the standard you might expect from such a small hamlet (two words - seafood platter!), and there's always a choice of 3 or 4 veggie dishes on the board too. Prices are pretty reasonable and certainly don't strain the wallet too much given the size of the portions. Beers are a more standard Belhaven range, but they do always have one speciality real ale on hand pump. Worth booking at weekends as they can get pretty busy.

It avoids the claustrophobic feeling all too common among train stations in various parts of the world. This one seems right-sized relative to the activity level. The stored luggage facility here was particularly useful for us as we were able to leave our luggage here on our last day in Inverness after we had checked out of our AirBnB. We were able to conveniently pick up our bags just before our train to the airport. The connections to other major cities in Scotland from here are quite useful. We did our ticketing via the kiosks there. They were in good working order and accessible the three times we used the station. We bought our local tickets directly at the kiosk and we bought our intercity tickets on-line to claim them at the kiosk. We had no problems. The building is not an architectural gem by any means and it does show its age in many ways. But it's kept up well enough and it serves its purpose.

No problem I hear you say. Wrong!!! Well it's wrong if you attempt to buy it from the ticket office at Inverness Railway Station. Heaven forbid that you should complicate your order by asking for facing seats (due to motion sickness) & want the two seats together. The female staff are rude, arrogant, condescending & the most unhelpful staff I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. I only wish I could select a minus star. So maybe they were having a bad day? Wrong again!!! This is not a one off. This is a journey made at least six times a year. Unfortunately you can't book directional seats together on line or we wouldn't darken their door again. It's not as though it can't be done without all the drama & sneering. There is a male staff member (who even knows how to smile) who will book the journey without any fuss. So my advice is, if you can get your tickets any other way, do so & keep away from this nasty little office where customer service & Highland hospitality is an alien concept. RxXx
