Disappointing Experience After 4 Years of Loyalty I've been going to Nails by Vivian for over four years. My mom and I were both regulars, and we always had a good experience with Vivian herself. Unfortunately, my most recent experiences changed that completely. In May, I got Gel X nails for my graduation. I showed a photo of exactly what I wanted, but the result was way off. I left disappointed but didn't say anything at the time out of respect for the long-standing relationship. After showing the nails to several friends who confirmed it was a bad job, I called to share my feedback. I had paid \$75 and ended up spending another \$60 to have them redone elsewhere. Vivian was understanding and told me she would "take care of" my next visit. That visit was today--and it ended my relationship with this salon. Vivian was out of town, and her husband took over my appointment. Although he told me the salon was fully booked, it was nearly empty when I arrived early. He took me right away, but from the moment I sat down, I felt rushed. He kept pressing me to choose a color--something they've always known I take my time with. After trying one color and not liking it, I went to choose another, and he snapped, "You still haven't picked a color?" Then added he had other customers coming--as if I wasn't one. Keep in mind, I was there to fix a \$75 set that I had already paid for and was unhappy with. When I asked for chrome powder, he got visibly annoyed and said, "What does she want now?" The tech explained, and he told me it would cost extra. I gave up and just asked her to finish with regular polish. When I asked if we were all set, he told the tech I was paid for. I walked to my car to grab cash to tip the tech, and as I was leaving, he called out, "What, no tip?" I told him I was getting cash, but the comment was incredibly rude and uncalled for--especially for a correction visit. I tipped the tech and left, knowing I'd never return. After four years of loyalty, I expected to be treated with basic respect. This experience was frustrating, uncomfortable, and completely disappointing. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I'm shaking after the experience I had here today. As if the dried out polish and the flies and wasp buzzing throughout weren't bad enough, the owner was extremely hostile to me, my friend and our three young daughters (5, 6 and 6) in what should have been a most special memory. Her agitation began when my daughter reached for a nail polish when choosing a color. She snapped to me to help her which I was happy to do but had been helping my other daughter. The mani/pedi were uneventful with two customers mentioning how well behaved they were, "like princesses". While my treatment was being finished, our youngest was slowly spinning the nail polish rack and occasionally lifting colors. This didn't strike me as problematic. When their voices got loud, we reminded them we were in a salon and they needed to be respectful and stay in their seats. They weren't perfect but in terms of kid's behavior, we were proud of them. When paying the bill, the owner began to lecture my friend to say our children were not behaved and had mixed her colors on the rack creating work. As I went to tip she sighed and rolled her eyes. I mentioned that I understood that she had an issue with the kid's behavior and I was surprised and disappointed. She then repeated the same complaints in a loud and frustrated voice and said with exasperation that we do not parent appropriately. I asked to speak to the owner only to learn this was the owner. I then said to her that if this was her position I do not think it advisable for her to offer this service (by the way, she charged $40 per kid so definitely highest end of market). I also said I found her remarks to be both inappropriate and rude. She then said- that's fine, I have many loyal customers, they will keep coming to me. As I said to her, I truly cannot imagine how she is in business or will remain so. She proceeded to ask the people in the salon if they agreed with her as her loyal clients. A big guy who had been taking selfies throughout proceeded to say that it became my issue bc I had continued to engage. My daughters thanked her despite this and then we rushed out as the oldest began to cry because this woman "didn't like her". I gave up and threw my shoes on so ironically will be getting a polish change due to smeared nails bc she didn't wait for me to dry to give me this treat. Came here for a powder gel manicure for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was able to walk in right away. I was immediately taken, which was nice, but there were not a whole lot of colors to choose from for a powder manicure. When I finally did select a color I liked, they told me they did not have it and had to choose another one (which I ended up still liking). The one thing that I like about powder is that *usually*, places don't put your nails under the UV, but here they did and the gel top coat started peeling off my nails within the week, which was very frustrating since I paid $40 for my nails and expected them to last for more than a week. Extra charge to shape the nails. Really??? $200 for 2 pedis, 1 mani, and a set for something that runs $100-$150 with tip. Gave me a hard time about my Apple Pay, after I asked them if they took it. They wanted an actual card. Apple doesn't automatically come with a card, you must request it. Next I asked to include the tip and they insisted on cash. "Cash is king" is the motto here. Well, it's 2023 and they need to get with reality, we are an electronic society and not everyone has the CIK mentality. We were in town for a funeral and this visit added so much unnecessary drama. My daughter and I had a terrible experience at this salon. The owner was very rude to us, super unprofessional and treated us the way no patron should treat their customers. The place is filthy and I would not recommend anyone get their nails there. They have flies, mosquitoes and wasps everywhere. This was supposed to be a daughter and mom special time but it was ruined by the unpleasant experience and rude remarks but the owner. My manicure was rushed, the cuticles cut too deep and bleeding, and when I asked Vivian to fix things, she got really angry and asked that I she thinks I do not know what good manicure looks like. My daughter who's 6 was yelled at for moving her chair and when she asked to see different colors, she wasn't allowed bc she already picked one. Best Nail salon on Long Island I recently moved up island and have tried soooo many different Nail salons and they don't seem to measure up to Vivian's Staff. All so professional and sweet. I have been a customer at Vivian's for over two years. The staff is great and always respectful. I was in the shop on the day the other women complained. It did not happen as they said. The mothers never once asked the daughters to stop. Yes they were being children, but as parents you need to stay on top of them. After all it is a place of business. I was trying to read my book but gave up because of the distraction. The gentleman getting a pedicure defended Vivian, as she was right. So don't pay too much attention to the 2 women who gave a 1. Had a wonderful pedicure and powder gel manicure. John did my powder manicure. He was meticulous and they came out wonderful. They lasted over 3 weeks and I only had to have them redone because of the nail growth. The salon is clean and the owner, Vivian, is very pleasant. I have been coming here for the past 3 years for pedicures and lip and eye brow waxing. My regular girl is Luisa and she is amazing! I have had a couple of different surgeries on my feet and knees and she has always taken care not to twist or hurt me as other places have done. My pedi's last without chipping. Nail Tech guilt tripped me into tipping more for a service when I originally gave $7 for a $65 mani-pedi, she proceed to ask if she had done a bad nail service due to the low amount of tip and gave me a scowl, I really would recommend not going there if you don't want to be treated rudely. The nails themselves were fine, and so was the whole experiance until we paid and left the building. The very quiet lady who did my nails ran after us and told us we "forgot a tip for her and her colleugue". We didn't have any change apart from two twenties so gave her one of them for the two to split. Really great work by the techs but VERY RUDE OWNER. When you are made to feel as if you don't matter to a business owner, it does not matter how good the work is. END OF STORY. Yesterday, they were out of the color I always use, even though I have been there countless times and had made an appointment. I had to choose another shade but when I asked the owner, Vivian, if she would be getting my favorite color again, for next time I come in, she blatantly said NO. "We have too many colors already." On my previous visit, Vivian was to do my SNS manicure. When I sat down at her station, after my pedicure, she was also busy with walk-ins and phone calls. Before she began my manicure, again she was making an appointment on the phone. I took the moment to say I would be right back as I needed to visit the restroom. I began to stand up and she said, "I take somebody else." I immediately sat down and told her that I did not have time to wait and after all, I had made my appointment weeks before. I was not a walk-in. Her look of I DON'T CARE was so obvious, I believe she herself was embarrassed by it. In the spring of this year I made an appointment for my daughter and myself weeks ahead. It was a birthday gift for her and we had an event to attend 2 hours later. I told that to Vivian when I made the appointment as well as when we walked in for it. Pedicures first, went well. She was finished first. When she moved over for her mani, I made clear that I wanted to sit next to her for the mani and got a shrug and something about it being the wrong station for SNS. When I was seated 3 stations away from my daughter and then ignored for the next 20 minutes, I began to get angry. Asking Vivian why I'm sitting unattended for so long, I was again reminded HOW LITTLE THE OWNER CARES with "We're busy." Having had my first and last manicure here I now understand why nyc has imposed strong sanitary laws for nail salons. This is a dirty and disgusting business and I am sure they would fail a health inspection on every count. The polishes are old and thick and the rims of the bottles have never been cleaned. The table I was seated at was filthy. I asked the masked worker to clean it. She wiped it with her dirty hand and said it was clean. Then she tried to file my nails with an emery board that looked like it had been used by 100 others. I bought a fresh one for a dollar. I could go on and on but if you are desperate this looks like the only option on North Fork do bring your own polish, a mask for fumes, and purell. Vivian came up to me and noticed right away on how fragile and sensitive my nails and cuticles are so she was very careful with them which I loved. I had a manicure and pedicure at this salon on Monday. It was a nice day and they had the front and rear doors open. As a result of this, I spent an hour and a half swatting flies and bees away from me. This was extremely annoying. On top of that, Sunday morning the soles of my feet hurt and they still hurt today as a result of an over aggressive filing of my heels with a metal tool. Find another place to have your nails done. The guy though! One of the worst manicures I've had. Didnt even cover my full nails, uneven, crooked, not painted well, talked shit about other customers while we were sitting there, didn't clean my cuticles at all, and then bitched and complained when I asked him to fix certain parts of my nails and made sure to emphasize that they don't give refunds while throwing in rude comments. Let alone him making almost sexist rude comments to me. Hes just generally rude to customers AND their employees. Definitely a complete turn off for me ever going there again. Would go for the pedicure girls and maybe to try some of the other girls that work there but that guy should be fired because he's absolutely horrible and made my mostly enjoyable experience really really bad. Extremely UNSATISFIED and left UPSET by the service I received here. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR SERVICE. I walked in Vivian's with my hard earned money hoping to receive quality service but I walked out crying and the worst part is they did not care. I requested a gel manicure and regular pedicure and chose a color that they said they had in both gel and regular and would MATCH. I had my toes done first and when it came time to do my nails the owner VIVIAN RUDELY told me it would not look the same as my toes due to the consistency of the polish. Why did she not inform me of this before I got my toes done I do not know. She then told me she was in a rush and spoke very quickly so I could not understand what she was saying. She hastily did my nails and I was obviously very unhappy with the end result. I started crying in front of my mom because I felt I had wasted the money I worked for and when my mom expressed this to Vivian she was RUDE and basically said she didn't care. My mom asked her to fix it and SHE DIDN'T WANT TO. My mom said I wanted to remove my gel manicure and she would pay half the price and Vivian did not want to compromise. VIVIAN DID NOT CARE ABOUT MY, A PAYING CUSTOMERS, SATISFACTION. A very nice nail tech saw how upset I saw and tried fixing it for me and Vivian told her not to waste her time. I am half Spanish so I don't want to play the race card but I believe she may be RACIST. Very disappointed by the way I was treated.
