I have been through certification in a few states, but none has been as thorough as the training Dave conducts. Is it monotonous if you already know what you're doing, perhaps. But if, like me, you desire to always know the laws of each state, and you enjoy a good refresher, Five Rings Armory is great for the seasoned pro as well as the absolute beginner. Dave is friendly and well versed is all things "weaponry" related. It is obvious that he takes great pride in making sure his students understand the safety and precautions necessary when handling firearms. Once on the range, he and his team are meticulous and measured to ensure each firearm is secure and that each pupil does what is necessary for certification. Five Rings offers courses at different times for different skill levels and has an accessible facility and parking. All of scheduling information can be found on the website. I enjoyed the weekend course which included a mix of skill levels: some professionals and some beginners. Full club house with bar and kitchen including twice monthly Friday fish frys, 6 Trap fields (open to the public), 2 stocked fishing lakes, brand new 20-lane covered rifle/pistol range (members and guests only), archery and a pro shop--ALL for the astoundingly low membership dues of $125 a year, family included. Need I say more? Okay, let me mention that the Thursday League Night burgers, fries and deep-fried mushrooms are delicious! EGC has the claim of being the oldest continuously chartered gun club in the USA (since 1879). Whether there's a private club somewhere in the original 13 colonies that can beat that claim, I'm not sure, nor do I care. EGC has none of the pretentiousness that usually accompanies a "private club". In fact, they welcome the public on weekends and guests of members are always welcome. A "round" of trap costs about $5 for non-members which includes your 25 clay birdies. Ammo available for sale or bring your own--(shot heavier than 7.5 prohibited). Hours: Saturday: Noon - 5 p.m. fun shooting open to the public Sunday: Noon - 5 p.m. fun shooting open to the public Thursday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m -- League competition on Thursdays begins @ 7 p.m. (year-round) All other time, you are welcome to use the two lakes for fishing. There is an additional $20 per year fee if you're using non-powered boat. And be sure you're insured because the ground by the rifle seating is covered with wood planks that you will for sure trip on. Don't recommend this place to anyone over 60 or with disabilities. If you have a disability you will not be able to access the rifle range at all. He finally laid gravel down by where you would park after years of parking and walking on clay. His gate to the range is archaic. If you're handicapped you won't be able to open the gate at all. You push a code in it unlocks the chained gate but you have to manually pull on a gate with a wheel on it across gravel so you can drive in. Worry about your safety because with the gate unlocked anyone can drive in while you are there. Not a safe range for women wanting to shoot by themselves. No Range Safety Officers on duty, it's completely unstaffed. Not safe range by NRA standards.

There was lots of hands-on involvement by participants in attendance. I think the SIRT exercises/drills were a huge hit with everyone there. The course covered Illinois law in great detail, took the class through various simulated situations and impressed upon us gun safety as well as formulating a home safety plan. I highly recommend this "academy" in which to take the CC 16 hour and 3 hour renewal course. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I learned a lot over the two day course and feel that they cared that I was doing this to protect myself and family. Thanks, guys!
