The bread and olives are complimentary and delicious. I ordered a salad which was wonderful. My mussels came and the sauce, OMG!!!!, so so good. So good for sopping with the extra bread. I ate all of the mussels and I was by myself. Then, my main course came. My Salmon was cooked perfectly. I would go back and have the exact same thing. It was that good. It seems simple but restaurants do get it wrong from time to time. Also, the service was superb. Two young ladies seem to run both inside and outside. Prompt and attentive service. Highly recommend this place. I'll be in Saarbrücken again on Saturday and I'm trying to convince myself to try a new place, but I'm probably just going to go back to La Bastille.

We decided to have lunch after strolling the city at the end of our holidays and I saw the "Boudin Noir" (aka Black Pudding) on the menu and begged my family to enjoy our meal here - It was no mistake at all. We tool a table outside and where bothered a little by some hungry wasps, but we know how to live with them and so it was not much of a hassle. The food was delicious, my kids went for the Piccata Milanese (escalope or Schnitzel called as well) and my wife had the Dibbelabbes one of Saarlands specialities. I tried all plates and was really surprised, a very rich meal, but not drowned in grease, but every single one with its own fine taste that made my day. The dressing for the salad was based on a French mustard sauce, but had an additional flavor added that I didn't decipher completely, but it contained sesame and reminded a bit of Asian fusion kitchen and was very nice as well. Needles to say that the service of the host was very good, she explained everything without being arrogant or unfriendly and kept an eye on the customers wishes, we changed the side orders for the kids without any problem. The prices were reasonable and we didn't wait much for the orders. An absolute recommendation for Saarbrücken.

The place sits on a lake & last night was frozen & extremely pretty as we walked up to the house. Seated inside where the bar was located, it felt just like a cozy pub & the waitstaff was super friendly & attentive Mr ordered the onion tart & I chose the potato soup for our appetizers. The onion tart was filled with tons of tender onions and lots of gruyere cheese while my soup was thick & the roasted potatoes did all the talking. Nice smoked flavor from the roasting Main dishes included the potato dumplings filled with spinach and ricotta for the Mr. He loved it & the spinach was very dry and fresh - cooked perfectly I opted for the barley risotto with mushrooms and chestnuts. Tons of wild mushrooms and lots of chestnuts. Our portions were huge! I ordered the special of the day, Mix Grill, with grilled meats. The dish was simple, perhaps even conventional, but the quality of the ingredients and the preparation was indeed very good. The place is cozy and the decoration of good taste. Coupled with reasonable prices, Die Kartoffel is a pleasant choice. PS: just the owner spoke some English, so it really feels like Germany.
