We had a full day of hiking at Cape Blow Me Down and Cedar Cove, and we were ready to eat some good food. Lark Harbour is a tiny little bayside town with small colorful homes dotting the hillside overlooking this scenic setting. As soon as you walk in, you'll see a pool table and a couple of electronic casino games. There's a little bar, and several tables inside the dining room. Where you want to sit here, if the weather cooperates, is outside on the deck. This looks across the deep blue water across to the forested hills of Blow Me Down Provincial Park. What a view. At the same time we arrived, it seems like every local and tourist in the area got there at the same time. They were busy, and they just had one very nice woman waiting tables and (I assume) Mrs. Myrtle was back in the kitchen making all of the incredible food. We went into this place without having any expectations, figuring we'd get some decent fish and chips. The beer selection was mostly just domestic cans and bottles, so we opted for the cool blue Quidi Vidi Iceberg lager bottles. The outdoor deck was full when we arrived, but it opened up right about the time our meal arrived. We learned early on that you should try the seafood chowder at every single place you visit that offers it. On this stop, we almost forgot but I ordered it and we were treated with the #1 favorite during our entire trip. That chowder had huge chunks of lobster, crab, and I'm pretty sure a little salmon. Around the rim were a couple of fresh local steamed mussels. I'm not a big mussel fan, but those were fantastic. The chowder had the absolute best spice combination, and I am thinking they use a bit of paprika to give it this little orange gleam around the outside edge. We also split a fish and chips, and once again that turned out to be the best one we had in our whole trip. They have halibut fish and chips on the menu, but it was not in season on our visit. The staff here is working their tail off, and it may take a little longer if they are very busy. Just be patient, it'll pay off in the end! I can't recommend this place enough.

Tuesday, January 19…read more I had supper at Emile's Pub and Eatery ... it is in the Days Inn, which is attached to the mall. I ordered lasagna. It was good and freshly baked just for me. The two servers were friendly. When it came time to get my bill and leave, though, they'd disappeared. I waited at my table for a while and then waited at the bar. I could hear one in the room with the VLTs (gambling machines). Just as I was ready to walk out, the other one came in from the kitchen. Wednesday, January 20 It was storming so I didn't want to go too far for supper so I went to Emile's again. I had wings with honey garlic sauce and lattice fries. It was really good. There was a lot and I left most of my fries and all of my carrots. There were different servers this evening from last night and they were friendly. They just weren't overly quick or attentive. At one point, my glass was empty and I put it at the end of the table to catch their attention that I wanted another. Fourteen minutes later I still didn't have a drink. One of the servers was giving the two guys at the table next to me extra special attention all evening so I flagged her down as she went past for another drink.

It has the usual hotel menu items, with some unique additions. I had a Hot Top Salad. Grilled onions, mushrooms, chicken on top of a romaine & spinach salad, finished with parmesan. It was fantastic - so great that I wonder why I haven't previously come up with the idea myself. I will definitely be back the next time I am in the area.

The Cat Stop was our choice after the hike and out back to do the Western Brook Pond boat tour on a…read moreperfect summer afternoon. We really wanted to grab some good local beer on tap, and my research pointed me to this spot. The setup is a little unusual, because the dining room area is mostly taken up by a nice bar with a couple of tables. Walk on through to the outdoor deck, and you will see why this is such a great spot to grab a beer. We were there on a Friday evening, and they had a fantastic solo acoustic musician playing out on the deck. I can't even begin to explain how large the deck is, right on the water in the most beautiful spot of Norris Point where it overlooks the East Arm of the bay. They've installed solid plexiglass all the way around, so that cuts out any gusty wind that might be swirling around in the bay. The local draft selection was pretty good, serving up a bunch of the Quidi Vidi beers from St. John's. In addition they have a few other beer offerings, wine, and mixed drinks. Grab a scenic table on the deck, order a couple of drinks and enjoy this view. That's where I may stop you, though. I will say that this is a very popular spot on a weekend evening. The deck was absolutely packed, and they had two wait staff just running from table to table the entire time we were there. I'm just not sure about the food setup here, because they don't actually have a true kitchen there that I could make out. It appears they use some commercial fryers behind they bar, so the girl who was pouring and making all the drinks behind the bar was also managing the food preparation. We just split a fish and chips, and the fish was more or less food service frozen and formed cakes. The fries were great, but the fish left a lot to be desired. I'll give extra props to this restaurant staff for all the work they were doing to handle a completely full house on the deck, along with a couple of people inside at the bar and at a few tables. This place is well worth a stop for drinks on the deck, but I may steer you elsewhere for lunch or dinner. If we were back in there area, we'd definitely go back there and have a couple of beers on the deck. They do also serve pitchers!
