Autumn bounced back after surgery and looking at her, you would never guess she has cancer. Well, my mom and I refused to give up on her, and I called around to many different hospitals -- we were turned away by two due to it being COVID and them not taking on any new clients/patients at the time, which is totally understandable.. but then I found Olney-Sandy Spring Veterinary Hospital. They are about an hour away from where we live, but it is well worth the hike. When I called, I was emotional and spoke to this lovely lady, Kathy. She helped me feel calm and taken care of while making my appointment. I am forever grateful for the compassion she showed me that day -- she could tell I was upset, made a point to make a connection with me, and didn't just ask me for information about my pet. After sending in Autumn's records, we were quickly scheduled for her first chemotherapy consult. Dr. Krueger beautifully explained our options and that she thought Autumn would be a good candidate for chemotherapy. After every chemotherapy appointment she has there, I get a phone call from either Dr. Krueger or Autumn's amazing chemotherapy nurse, Alyssa, on how she was that day; I also get an email from Dr. Krueger with a great summary of her day and what our next steps are. Dr. Krueger is very kind and compassionate. Alyssa sent us this beautiful photo of Autumn and let us know that she enjoyed her hot dogs and beef flavored pill pockets while she was there. Since I am a vet tech myself, it is hard for me to let go but I never had that concern here since I know she is loved and in amazing hands. Autumn was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma in March and was given 1-3 months to live. It is now August and all her follow up diagnostics are clear -- we are cherishing every day we have with our girl. Her quality of life is simply the way it was before any of this happened, and I do not think any of it would be possible without Dr. Krueger, Alyssa, and the rest of Olney-Sandy Spring Veterinary Hospital's staff.

Longer version as a 10 year CUSTOMER. Pros - -They provide veterinary care at a large facility that can do all X-rays, surgeries and grooming under one roof. - Good experience with surgical outcomes, specifically with Dr Rapp. - Front staff- Patrick was always helpful and kind. He was not the only one, but he definitely stood out. - I'll be fair and post this as a positive but they are 1 for 2 on medical emergencies. One time they helped the next day but there was another time they wouldn't let us bring our pet in and told us to go elsewhere. Cons -Financial meat grinder -Not flexible with appointments. Appointments are often a month out before you can be seen. Is your pet just supposed to suffer for weeks? -Everything is at minimum twice the cost as you can get anywhere else. One of the vets breeds miniature schnauzers for profit - where in the world is the integrity in that? -Different vet every time so they even if they did act like they care- they never actually get to know your pets. This also leads to wildly different speculations on treatment. - Just an overall miserable, lousy experience over a ten year period. Everyone seems miserable and unhappy. -I would dread going here every time, but thought there were not any vets out there any better than they are. I was wrong. I found a far superior veterinarian experience. I have to drive an hour away, but it is absolutely without a doubt worth it. I suggest you do the same.

I wish we had used this practice for all of her care. My husband and I feel so grateful for the doctors and the staff at Town & Country. They are a wonderful, attentive, respectful, and caring team! When the moment came when we saw our cat was beyond help and feeling discomfort, the practice responded with such care and compassion for our cat, and for my husband and myself. I believe your pet will receive top care here. Also, communication is clear, the practice makes time for urgent needs, and their prices seem quite fair.

At one point the vet, Dr Walker, recommended that I hire a driver for our dog to drive her to several other states for care. I asked if she was joking, she was not. I was pleasant and asked relevant questions. The interaction took me by surprise. But this interaction is very telling, because it indicated how little she was interested in helping my dog. She was dismissive of my concerns of serious chronic illness, too. I want an advocate not an adversary. I can chalk it up to every one has bad days, but I dont want to go back to confirm. I cant motivate her to help my dog. I can't even motivate her to be respectful or courteous. Therefore, I will seek care elsewhere.

I seem to come across vets of two extremes: the "anything at all costs" vet, and the hands off, "whatever" vet, and my experience with NAC is more of the former which can be a good and bad thing. When I was treating elderly diabetic cat he was able to diagnose our cat with diabetes within our first visit which was a RELIEF because it was something that I suspected but was brushed off by more than two other vets. Now here comes the tricky part- I felt pressure to treat my cat because "there are options" but I believe treatment differs on a cat by cat basis. We did our research and were aware of the possible outcomes for cats with diabetes. Diabetes treatment in cats is uncertain and from what I gathered would have just been uncertain torture for our cat. We had an old, irritable cat who HATED vets and would practically have a panic attack every time she was at the vet. Her sister from the same litter exhibited the exact same symptoms and had to be put down suddenly months before our diagnosis so from what we gathered her prospects where already grim. Monthly vet visits and shots just seem like hell for a cat that is even temperamental about being touched. We believed we had her best interest in heart and decided to put her down. We were able to follow through with our decision but not without a bit of a guilt trip. I understand vets have the training and experience that I do not as a cat owner, but when it comes to ethics it's not about passively nodding your head to the doctor and submitting. It's about looking out for your loved ones and making the hard decisions; I staunchly believe that quality of life trumps longevity. I will still seek treatment from NAC for my second cat and I believe they care about our pet(s), but I would like to highlight the need for pet owners to advocate for their pets when it comes to ethical decisions.

Somehow my dog was given a Gabapentin prescription which is a medication for seizures, anxiety, and…read more(maybe) pain. Gabapentin is not a drug approved by the FDA for dogs. An extremely common side effect of Gabapentin in a dog is confusion and wobbly walking. I took my dog to the Norbeck Animal Clinic because of these side effects, and the vet I got on that particular day was bad. That vet decided that the problem was a cognitive disorder and thought the Gabapentin would cure it (which is not what Gabapentin does). She also prescribed clindamycin for meningitis. Clindamycin is not recommended for meningitis (at least in humans), and she had no reason to say that it was meningitis except for the wobbly walk. (I do know that medical doctors never prescribe medications until they test for the disease.) After three weeks my dog was in really bad shape, and I was informed that the dog should be put down. Fortunately I was able to make enough sense of what the vet was trying to do, and I stopped giving my dog Gabapentin, and he had a total recovery in less than two days. There are so many vets in the Norbeck Animal Clinic. I don't know how informed all of the vets are, but I now wouldn't trust any of them. I feel very lucky that my dog survived Norbeck Animal Clinic.

My dog has a health condition, Addison Disease. It has been a great concern to me, and has not always been dealt with at other animal hospitals in a thorough and knowledgeable manner. The staff even obtained the necessary records from our former vet. The cost here has been reasonable.
