This dog park is HUGE! There is a fenced in area to the left of the parking lot where you can let your dogs run off leash, if you're unsure how they'll do in the open. Or you can venture out on the miles of trails to the right of the parking lot (off leash, as well). The trails in the open areas are pretty wide (think car width) & easy to navigate and follow. One of the trails even has some freshly laid crushed gravel. The trails through the woods are narrow but well packed down. However, If you have any mobility issues, you might stick to the open area trails as you're likely to encounter fallen logs or have to scale up a creekside when on the trails through the woods. Close to the parking lot, there are some obstacles set up so your dog would like ride on the seesaw or climb the A-frame. I've been at multiple times of day. The middle of the day seems to be a little less populated. It does get pretty busy towards late afternoon/early evening as people are getting off work. Parking can be sparse at that time. If so, people tend to park off the side of the road & walk over. Be sure to slow down & pay extra attention as you are coming or going as dogs sometimes venture into the parking lot or road. Lawrence needs more dog parks, but this one is a good start. We enjoy coming out here in the warmer days with our pup because there's so much room to run, smells to smell, and good hikes for us. If you hike it right, you'll come up to a little waterfall that's pretty cool. One thing I'd warn, make sure your dog responds well if you venture off on a hike. We took Scout here when he was really small and he all but disappeared into the wilderness chasing birds... Took a while to find him! But overall, it's a good one if not a bit far away from downtown Lawrence (located out by the lake). The other dogs we've encountered are friendly, and it's got that overall nice Kansas-nature charm that you'd expect from the area. read more

This is no normal dog park, this is a doggie Heaven. Plan to stay awhile because once you start walking down the path to the river and open fields, not 1, not 2, but 3 open fields (each one bigger than the last) your dog may want to stay for hours. read more

Wow! 30+ acres of open area for dogs to play! Augie, my dog, loves it here! My girlfriend and I took him to the fabulous Mutt Run for his first time today; he ran his tail off. The Mutt Run is an off leash dog park which always has a great mix of all breeds and sizes. Warning... If Fido is not trained on off leash recall, he may or may not come back. I would recommend keeping your dog on leash the first couple of times to avoid any roughhousing or running away. A happy dog owner could lose their furry friend fast if they can't be trusted off leash; this 30+ acre wooded playground for mutts is large and in charge. I also recommend passing on this great dog park if your four-legged child is under socialized. There are 150-pound Great Danes, Giant Boxing Boxers, Overly Hyper Labs, and Snarky Chihuahuas. If your "child" is under socialized, both of you could be in danger. Even though our furry children are cute and cuddly, they are animals. The Mutt Run is a great place for my bundle of fur. Our family has been through several obedience courses that gave him great off leash recall and he has been socialized on a regular basis through doggie daycare and socialization events since he was a small puppy. We love Mutt Run, or as Otto knows it, "The Park". A wide variety of people and dogs come here at all times of day to give their dogs some exercise and companionship. There's a fenced-in area, an open area where you can usually see dogs playing fetch or frisbee, and some short trail loops. I personally love that the trail loops are short, because our German shepherd, Otto, tends to take off after other dogs down the trail, and it makes it easier to get him back. There's also a pump for water, a bowl, a lost and found, and sometimes a kiddie pool. You can tell that the Friends of Mutt Run organization loves this place. read more

One of the best dog parks I've ever visited. It's a loop in a huge open space, so even with lots of dogs there, it's hard to notice if you're all going a different direction and pace. We met some friends here for a dog play date and it was awesome! A wide range of different dog breeds, with good dog owners who watch their dogs and make sure they don't attack other dogs or people. At the entrance, they have a hose and bucket for dogs to drink water. Bring your own poop bags! read more

This is one of the best off leash parks in the metro area. The size is tremendous and perfect for large breed dogs, but not unwelcoming to small breed dogs. Like all off leash parks, make sure your dog is obedient and sociable. If your dog doesn't play well with others, keep it on the leash. If your dog does not listen well, keep it on the leash or you will be hunting 30 acres! Parking here is not the greatest. Most of it will be along the sides of the roads. Make sure you are careful driving through the area due to this. Although the off leash area is huge, a lot of people think they can keep their dog off leash in all areas of the park. Keep in mind the other areas of the park dogs are required to be on leashes. read more

This dog park is only one of two in Lawrence. It's a decent park with a lot of walking trails. There's also a small fenced in area if you don't trust your pooch off leash. The down side of this park is that most people don't pick up after their dogs. It's an open area and I get that dog poo is natural, but no one wants to take their dog for a walk through another dog's business. Other than that, it's a great place to exercise your dog! Waterfall is "closed" haha Park is HUGE!! No fence. If your dog doesn't come to you... Keep them on a leash or they'll go bye bye. Liked the open space. But be aware of running with your dog in the fields as there are scattered divots and holes you can break your ankle in. Parking can be limited, but winter time it looks decent. This place sets the bar, and I have zero shame saying that I now hold all other off leash dog parks to the same standard I hold this to! The ONLY bummer I can think is, parking isn't necessarily the easiest, but it somehow works out every single time! With that being said, once you pull onto the road, you never know when you'll come across a rogue dog, so make sure to drive slow, and keep a look out. For starters there's a small fenced in area that my girls and I have hung out in a few times. It's great, but when I bring them here, we're typically coming for the off leash walk! This place is HUGE! There are a few different paths you can choose, some shorter than others, I typically just follow my dogs on our chose your own path adventure. There's typically balls and frisbees left behind to place with, but make sure to bring your own too! Also, somehow my girls always manage to get dirty, so make sure to have a towel, just in case, for your cars sake! One of the best dog parks I've been to in Kansas. The area is huge! Gives my dog a ton of space to run around, and the small waterfall area is also a favorite. There's always a good number of pups there, giving my dog a lot of new playmates. I was in Lawrence for a couple of days with my dog. First of all, the dog park is about as far as they could get it from town. Second, the fenced in area is unkempt and the fence is cheap and sagging. Hard to tell the last time it was mowed and the fence line was cleaned up. There is no water source inside the fence so you have to take a jug across the parking lot to get water. Really disappointing. They should go to other cities and discover how it should be done. I did walk some of the trails the first day. They were mostly deserted and it was creepy walking around out there by myself even with my dog. read more

Mutt run is a good size dog park with plenty of space for dogs to run, play, and get wet. The small fenced in area is also a great feature and they have provide benches through out the park to sit and take a break. Down side is that most people don't pick up after their dog and others don't know how to control their dogs. Also don't go early morning on Sundays between 7-9. There is a group of middle aged and older men and women who get together with their large dogs to have a play date. Their dogs have attacked my dog twice in the past two months. They do not try to stop their dogs and one of them told me my dog needed to learn how to fight. My dog and I grew up in Colorado and are use to dogs having tiffs but you can't expect a dog to defend itself if this being penned down by 4-5 dogs at one time. Even after it was apparent that there was an issue they continued to not to do anything to get their dogs off of mine. These people are inconsiderate and are not to be trusted. If you see a large group of them I suggest you head the other way. Other then that most people at the dog park have control of their dogs and are polite. read more

We started using this dog park not long after it opened but it has deteriorated significantly over the years. This dog park is large (30+ acres) but NOT well maintained, and there is no fence. We have used this dog park 7 days a week, 65 weeks a year in the past when it was better maintained. I do wish people had better sense than to take aggressive dogs to the park. This dog park is unsatisfactory in several respects: inaccessible due to being constantly muddy because its located in a flood plain with poor, poor, drainage which leaves standing water much of the time, mud-holes are too numerous to count along with scattered divots and holes, the service road is no longer mowed which allows musk thistle and other weeds with burrs to grow unabated. Another down side is that most people don't pick up after their dog. Don't know anyone who wants to take their dog for a walk through another dog's business. The people using the park are nice but one shouldn't say anything critical about the park or you will likely be ostracized. These people prefer to wear waders rather than request the City of Lawrence do anything to maintain the park. If you love nature its wonderful but you don't have to go to a dog park to observe nature. As a pet parent, I would prefer to take our dogs somewhere that doesn't require a bath and combing for burrs after each visit. Oh, and by-the-way, did I mention that one of our dogs was bitten by a coyote and other people's dogs have been bitten by rattlesnakes. Please be observant or you may become regretful! read more
