Fabulous. Contemporary art usually goes right over my head but that wasn't a big piece of the…read moredisplays here when I visited Strasbourg in November 2021. Modern art, yes. Political art, not so much. My visit started with a large exhibit explaining the history and origin of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise. Me, I love a rounding rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. When done properly, it gives me goosebumps. So to have this opportunity to learn about this song was interesting and enjoyable. From the "Chant de Guerre" that was the battle hymn for the Army of the Rhine and adapted to become Chant des Marsellois and subsequently La Marseillaise. From 1792 and through the 19th and 20th centuries, it represented a rallying hymn in the struggles for freedom. It was even taken up by Chinese students demonstrating in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Other exhibits included sculptures and art pieces and portraits, many of them absolutely interesting. I particularly enjoyed "Three Elements" (1925) by Vasilly Kandinsky and bought a print of it in the gift shop. Masks are required throughout the museum and QR codes were checked at entry. We drove to Bitch from Frankfurt specifically for this place and were not disappointed. What an amazing structure...and, to consider it was built in the 1930's. The Simserhof is a fortification build on the French/German border to protect the French from the soon-to-be invading Germans. I don't want to go into too much detail here, you will learn all bout it once you take the tour. The facility is HUGE! Almost all of it is underground, making this a real fun tour. Our guide was French and spoke some English. She struggled at times but took it all in stride and was very informative. We expected maybe a 1 hour tour or so. This thing took over 3 hours, and I say that in a good way. You will get to tour 2 parts of the bunker and watch a film on the development of the bunker, the politics surrounding its creation, and the history. All of that for only 10 Euro, what a steal! Bring a jacket, hat and gloves. Trust me, you will need them. I don't care if it is 80 degrees outside, bring them! The inside of the bunker is very cold. You can thank me later!

The museum is a bit of maze. However it is thoughtfully organized with the understanding that people can easily get lost. There are guides situated throughout the museum to guide you in a forward direction so that you don't get lost. Be patient. If you don't get to see an adjacent room in the moment, just know that you will get there. There is a time and a place. Located right next to the Cathedral Saint Etienne! Very quiet. Not crowded on a Monday. Small but interesting, and not overwhelming at all. Took me about 2 hours and I tend to linger and sit.

Everything was well-displayed and labeled, although most was in French only. We used Google to help us with translations. There are Roman baths, full skeletal remains in graves from an ancient cemetery, fine examples of woodworking, pottery, sculptures, glass, Renaissance paintings, architectural pieces, and much more! 5 euros per ticket, and my husband and I spent a full 3 hours here. We did not finish viewing the whole museum, but no worries. The tickets are good for 24 hours, so we can return to see the last of the exhibits tomorrow.
