However thankfully I did not book a room with a view of the city hall and Av Aliandos. The rooms with the view would have to face the noisy construction. Our room was facing a quiet courtyard with apartment buildings surrounding it. And it was quiet as a pin drop! Even during New Year's Eve! They even had heavy blackout curtains. The service was certainly top! They always put more tea for me, extra water bottles in the room, and snacks throughout each day of our stay (from cakes, pasteis de nata, fresh fruits, and chocolates). They were certainly always thoughtful with their touches. On top of it all, the breakfast was excellent! Fresh made to order egg dishes, plus a plethora of hot dishes (beans, cooked tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes and even miso soup!). They certainly knew how to cater to different tastes. Also the location could not get more central! Right in the middle of all the sites and walking distance from any where you wish to visit in Porto. Overall we loved every second of our stay and hope to come back!

Kudos to the gal who works the front desk (unfortunately, I can't recall her name, but I believe she may be the only female front desk attendant), who so graciously recommended some fabulous restaurants for us! - complimentary Portugese Egg Tarts and port, which seemingly was available 24/7 - a nice sit-down breakfast in a Michelin star restaurant, located in the lobby - a mini fridge stocked with complimentary snacks and drinks - a basic room that did the job CON: All that being said, there's one aspect that was not so appealing, which was the clawfoot bathtub/shower combo. It's literally located in the bedroom, separated only by a partition. Whenever we showered, humidity filled the room, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. I doubt this is a European feature, since I've traveled all over Europe and have never encountered this. Also, the shower curtain definitely needs to be replaced, as it was moldy on the bottom. Yuck! Because of this, I left the curtain wrapped around the outside of the tub, which resulted in water all over the floor. Neither a practical or good set-up at all! To top all that off, the most frustrating aspect, and I'd go out on a limb to say even dangerous aspect of the clawfoot tub/shower in our room, was the fact that the tub wasn't even bolted down. When Hubby was showering, he swore he felt that the tub was sinking into the floor. I thought he might have had too much to drink, except for the fact that he barely even drinks. So, how could that possibly be?!? Upon further inspection, I noticed that the tub wasn't at all stable, and that I could easily push it back and forth. What?!? We notified the front desk, and they fixed it but that was plain unsafe. How could a bathtub be wobbly whenever you moved around in it? That was really an accident just waiting to happen!! If you can tolerate the clawfoot tub/shower I think you'll find this hotel flawless. Just take this aspect into consideration, since you'll be showering everyday, right?!?

We were able to walk everywhere in just a few minutes. It is located a little off the beaten path which made it really quiet and relaxing. We stayed down by the river front and across the river most of the time. If you want to go up into the city center, I recommend taking the funicular or uber if you don't want to walk up a huge flight of stairs. The walk to the city center is straight up the entire time but it was fine because we took a break at a coffee shop. This hotel has a beautiful rooftop bar with a really pretty and quiet view of the river. Our room was clean and the tile accents were beautiful. The front desk and bar staff were really friendly and everyone spoke English. If we go back to Porto, we would definitely stay here again.

The shower was broken, the room seemed slightly unclean, and there was an unpleasant smell. The carpets and overall hotel was ugly, the breakfast was mediocre. It was very sterile and bare bones, not a pleasant experience for a stay. They told us we would have to book a new hotel for the second night as we could not stay in our current room, and when we checked out to go to the new hotel they refused to refund our second night that we never stayed in the hotel. We went to the PortoBay Flores hotel and it is exponentially better.

The only thing I didn't like about our room was the glass wall with mini blinds that separated the bathroom from bedroom. Sexy as the idea might have been it is a great disruption to be woken up multiple times during the night when the restroom is being used. When our flight home was cancelled last minute... the hotel staff was very accommodating and let us stay in the same room as well as assisted to reschedule our transportation to the airport the following day. I'd stay here again as the hotel was centrally located, the staff was great, the room was nice, and morning breakfast as outstanding!

One hour later I had to inquire again. Finally the manager stepped up and explained there was a maintenance issue on the connecting room and moved us to a new room instead. The associate never made eye contact with me after her "10 minute promise" on the wait time. Then, my room key was not working. I went downstairs and asked for a new key. The associate Francesca literally just handed me a key without asking for my identification. So unsafe! So I mentioned this to Beatrice right after and her explanation was "If we know the guest, we will issue the key without any identification. BUT, it told her Francesca never met me. She could have just reissued the key to any stranger not registered to the room. Beatrice took my complaint down and scribbled away. No follow up was done. I went ahead and reported this to the Marriott Customer Service and they provided me a case #. Apparently, the property was to get back to me in 24 hours. No follow up 10 days later. Apparently the case was closed without any follow up. They have re-opened the case and now they have 3 business days to get back to me. Disappointed with the customer service.

AC doesn't work well, so you are warned for the summer months. Room was spacious, super clean and very comfortable. Not as many ammenities as other hotels, but you do get the robe and slippers and toiletries (attached to the wall). Not too shabby. The staff for the most part are GREAT. On our first day some really couldn't answer questions/seemed confused and had issues with both English and Spanish, but we got through it. They try hard, and that is worth something. The lobby is small and can get crowded quickly. And now Bicicleta - the most unfriendly, obnoxious and unhelpful group of people I have met in Portugal or in most places. ABSOLUTELY THE PITS. Starting with Mr. Grumpy bouncer with an idiot attitude that is like a drill Sargeant when it came to checking on people not walking in from the streets on their way to the CROWDED breakfast room. (with bfast included in your price I can understand their concerns, but this guy was a bully). Most of the staff have a godforsaken look on their unfriendly faces, so if you are just wandering in to look around, expect to be inspected from head to toe and treated like you are a threat to society. NOT FRIENDLY. Breakfast: Where the coffee machine is located creates a mess of a line in front of the hot breakfast buffet area. Food is not bad, but navigating it gets very confusing. And when you add on the most of the staff are simply the worst you will encounter in hospitality, it makes for a mess. KUDOS however to how management handled the power outage. With back up generator, aging adults were able to use the elevator and toilets flushed. COLD shower, but they had power. What didn't manage the situation well was of course Bicicleta, who could only offer salad and didn't think about bread and cheese and cold cuts. Hotel management of the situation was SUPERB. Bicicleta? They should just keep peddaling into another country and leave for good. Have I said they are a dissappointing crew for the most part? All in all, I would still stay here, now that I know my way around town, because the location is great and management works hard to please!
