"Captivate!" is curated by German supermodel Claudia Schiffer who is a native of the North Thine-Westphalia district making the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast a good choice. The exhibit takes us through the golden age of fashion and supermodels. Photographs, more photographs, some memorabilia and lots of captions in both German and English. There were also plenty of tools and hands-on exhibits for kids to play with. The permanent collection included introduction of discovered remains, evolution of bodies and tools, myths and religion, health, and communication, etc. Don't forget to check out the outdoor exhibit, a 5-minute walk away, where neanderthal bones were discovered. Fantastic outdoor playground. Nearest parking lot charges 1.5 euros per hour. Also, check out the lovely Cafe Neanderthal No. 1 nearby for a sweet treat.

You can always take a break and lounge on the clear plastic orbs. Afterwards, come back to earth and visit the crazy spider exhibit: intricate webs are suspended from sheet glass. A guard is positioned in the room that visitors don't sneak in a can or two of Raid. Another exhibit featured rows of suspended fabric for the visitor to weave in and out of. After winding through, be rewarded with a highly unusual film short. This museum doesn't have as much art as the sister museum, K20, but it's well worth a visit. We were there in January and it wasn't busy- only a few minute wait to go up "In Orbit" The building is beautiful and spacious; we didn't even see the entire museum but would consider returning next time in Düsseldorf. Quite a few of the exhibits are admittedly unusual but it's still and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon doing something a bit out of the ordinary- especially if you've got painting and sculpture overload.

Despite the great collection, it wasn't crowded at all, which really helped enjoying the artwork. It's not a huge museum, so if you have a few days in Dusseldorf, check this out while you're doing the Old Town. It'll only take a few hours. (Tip: Pictures are not allowed unless you sign a form at the front at get a sticker showing you can take pictures. It's barely an inconvenience.)

To get there you can take the U-bahn to Heerdter Sandberg and walk for about 10 minutes. Otherwise you can take a bus to Niederkasseler Kirchweg and walk for 3 minutes (I saw the City tour hop-on hop-off bus also stops here).

Anyway, this is another of the town squares, though unlike Carlsplatz, this one was pretty empty, though it did have a statue in the middle. Actually, there wasn't really all that much in the square itself, though a short distance off of it you do come to the entertainment district that happens to be chock full of bars and clubs. However, while this square was nice, there wasn't all that much to do here.

There is an excellent collection of knives, swords and all things sharp but all the signs are in German which meant I could look at things but didn't know what I was looking at or why it was important. Understandably, I am probably not their target audience. Most tourists don't have Solingen on their list of German cities to visit. The museum isn't very big, it has 2 floors and you can probably cover everything in 1-2 hours. It is an OK museum for children; there was 1 room explaining how swords are forged and that had interactive elements which would be fun for kids but otherwise it is a standard museum with things displayed in glass cases. In summary, if you can read German (or bring someone who can) and like knives, go visit! Otherwise, I would skip this place.
