Dear tourists, if interested in modern art and architecture, this is your place to go!…read moreGreat old-modern-combination, probably one of the best architectural highlights in town. Art showed is truly modern (21st century, got it?) And rooms are dedicated to a huge range of different artists. This eclectic concept plus room in the basement for bigger expositions make this museum a good example of its kind. Not to talk of the tomas saraceno installation which can be entered (right.) Until end of 2014.

Go for the In Orbit installation. After donning a special suit and shoes, climb in to the exhibit…read morebut be forewarned : trying to walk on three layers of nets suspended 90 feet in the air isn't for the faint of heart. You can always take a break and lounge on the clear plastic orbs. Afterwards, come back to earth and visit the crazy spider exhibit: intricate webs are suspended from sheet glass. A guard is positioned in the room that visitors don't sneak in a can or two of Raid. Another exhibit featured rows of suspended fabric for the visitor to weave in and out of. After winding through, be rewarded with a highly unusual film short. This museum doesn't have as much art as the sister museum, K20, but it's well worth a visit. We were there in January and it wasn't busy- only a few minute wait to go up "In Orbit" The building is beautiful and spacious; we didn't even see the entire museum but would consider returning next time in Düsseldorf. Quite a few of the exhibits are admittedly unusual but it's still and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon doing something a bit out of the ordinary- especially if you've got painting and sculpture overload.

Five stars, I really enjoyed my time here. This is more like the sort of art that I really enjoy -…read moresome impressionists, some modern and even a few very old masters. It is a very large museum and you can expect to spend two hours quietly walking through the galleries and enjoying the paintings, sculptures and furniture. I felt the galleries were nicely laid out and the art not too crowded. Many/most of the captions were in German and English. They have a free wifi so Google Translate to the rescue where needed. The exhibit on the history of the city of Düsseldorf was also interesting. This was fun! [Review 16378 overall - 183 in Germany - 1885 of 2021.]

So this museum grew on me. I first found it quite boring but then realized it had hidden gems among…read morethe collection. So one of the reasons for coming to this museum at all, was that it was gratis with the Düsseldorf card. It's a massive collection over three floors and also fairly eclectic. You start downstairs, were the lockers and loos are and also there is a part of the city wall and then a modern day graffiti type sketch. Another whimsical thing to note was the banana graffiti at the entrance. I think the Curators have done a good job, but definitely for me the highlights were the Paleolithic and Early German (Frankish) jewelry collection as well as the 17th century books, ivory anatomy models and the gorgeous clothes from the 18th century. I wanted to check out some other museums, so only saw the 1st floor (have to leave something for next time). Overall, very glad that I came to check this one out, even tho' it wasn't my fave among the 4 museums I was able to visit over my Düsseldorf weekend visit. Yelp 245/ 2018

Amazing ceramic museum and very glad I got a chance to check it out, curtesy of it being free with…read morethe Düsseldorf card! The museum is spread out across two buildings. Towards the left, the first floor has Islamic and Modern ceramic art. The Islamic ceramic is amazing as there is an actual half of a tiled building in the museum! Downstairs is ancient ceramic art from all over the world and beautifully curated, visually striking pieces of not just every day objects, but also art works. Towards the right, the museum is spread over 4 floors, with the first floor being these amazing Delft cutlery sets, and then there was a special Chinese exhibition on the 2nd floor when we were visiting in December 2018. I I learnt that the ceramics that were glazed in yellow were meant for the Chinese Emperor only, and that the glazing of the color of the ceramic food bowls in China provided a visual cure that signified your importance at the Chinese court. This was a very very interesting exhibit, and I learned a lot about Chinese ceramic art. The 3rd floor of this museum had another enormous dining set and some other interesting pieces. However the 4th floor was another beautiful surprise and one of my faves - it's all decorative digital sculptural pieces, and it's not just sculptures depicting men or women, but animals too! The artistry really amazed me and if you only have a limited time to spend in this museum, this floor is where I would suggest you head to. Overall, really beautiful and brilliant and fascinating! Absolutely recommend! Yelp 246/ 2018

Prophetic,…read moreconsidering he included it in his play "Almansor" in 1821 (which portrayed the burning of a Quran). I know very little of Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) other than a few choice quotes so it was interesting being brought here by my Yelp friend Klaus-Dieter and I was pleased to learn a bit more about this Germany poet and writer. The Institute contains Heine's handwritten works (what survived the Nazi era) and collections of other literature and art from the Düsseldorf era of his time. They also have a huge collection of literature by others about the man. There is no other similar exhibit elsewhere in the world though there is a fountain in the Bronx (of all places!) in tribute https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/joyce-kilmer-park/monuments/700. You can expect to spend at least an hour touring the artifacts and displays in the institute, learning about this great man. I'll leave you with this quote that seems more Mark Twain but is indeed Heinrich Heine: "Experience is a good school. But the fees are high." [Review 16358 overall - 165 in Germany - 1865 of 2021.]
