If you happen to be in Barcelona on the first Sunday of the month this museum (and others) are free. Since there is a cap on the number of people permitted inside, you need to order your ticket online in advance. Otherwise, you'll never get in during one of those special days. You must choose your entrance time. If you show up early they won't let you in until 10 minutes prior to the time on your ticket. Good luck finding this art gallery! It is located in the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic) where the streets are narrow and not laid out in an easy to follow grid pattern. While the collection is extensive, it doesn't include Picasso's most famous works. Still, there are a number of wonderful paintings, sketches and sculptures. One of my favourites is the She-Goat sculpture in brass (see photo). The museum is in five former adjoining palaces. Don't miss the beautiful green and gold room with the fancy chandelier, cherubs and columns. I think it was reproduced to show how the palace used to look during the Baroque period. Originally, I had no plans on going to the Picasso museum. However, as I walked through the alluring medieval streets of the gothic quarter, it was hard not to be curious and peak inside. I have to say that this museum is truly for people who are vastly interested in Picasso's early life. Most of the famous abstract paintings, that we think of when we think of "Picasso" were largely absent. My expectation was that I would see all those famous abstract portraits. I guess they are probably somewhere else in other museums. Instead, the museum focuses on sketches, photographs, early paintings... it presents a timeline of Picasso throughout the years. Again, for someone that's interested in Picasso's roots. This is a great museum. For me, it was a bit underwhelming. It was also relatively small. If you're thinking that this museum houses the major works of Picasso, this is not the place. Instead this museum is a large collection of his early and not as well none pieces. The museum is set in the very attractive, historical and inviting oldest area of the city, the Bari Gotic, or the Gothic Bario. The tiny streets and alley are barely big enough for a Fiat and so rich in history. Here in this area is the Picasso Museo. We enjoyed the diverse collection that brought more of a human element to the iconic artist... Letters that he would embellish with drawings and the fondness he had for his family, and his little dogs, (Lump) who is featured time and time again thorough a series of oils. If you enjoy Picasso in the very least, I think this is a great place to experience. Then go for a multitude of shops in the area, and some sweets at near by Be Chocolate! read more

One of the finest art museums I've ever had the chance to visit. The old building is itself a work of art. The long and meaningful connection between Picasso and Barcelona is featured, this is as much an art museum as it is a history museum. It's in an older more medieval part of Barca, so getting here is a bit of an adventure itself, you'll have a wait and there's no avoiding the crowds. It's rightfully popular, but try to be strategic and distance yourself from the boorish and ill behaved. I'm more than a bit disgusted with tourists who think a Picasso museum is the place for hundreds of selfies. Before you come here, look up Velazquez's the Meninas painting and look at it carefully. There's a room here where Picasso has numerous variations on that earlier painting, a high point for me. Another high point was the way the museum was arranged so you could see the artists development and evolving styles. Picasso was to art what Mozart and Miles Davis were to music. A third high point to me was a remarkable and fascinating explanation with examples of the painting over a painting (or under a painting, whatever). While I was here there was also some live performance art going on in a non exhibit area which I found a little frightening, even though I am fond of saying, Fear No Art. Excellent gift shop, I now have a Picasso espresso cup and saucer in my breakfast rotation. read more

The Picasso museum was great for what was shown and in what way the art was displayed to guide the visitors through the artist's evolution in his time. However, unfortunately and unfortunately understandably, there are numerous very famous Picasso paintings that were NOT there in Barcelona because they are owned or on display in Madrid, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, etc. But unquestionably, visiting the museum on a Barcelona trip is a must and not a waste of time. I had purchased the tickets a month before. Although it was on the free Sunday of the month, purchasing in advance was the only way I could get in. As we arrived on time in the rain, the look and attitude the staff gave was as if we were an hour late. Anyone who didn't have tickets, were turned away as expected. Going through the museum and seeing the beautiful art was amazing! It began with Picassos early work and ended with his cubism movement. The building in which this museum is housed in is the other part that you'll enjoy. It's very beautiful art nouveau and very Spanish. It's almost like the house is the other reason you're there for. Of course it's been modernized but there are still bits and pieces of history which you will love. As far as the art, it's obviously 5+ Stars! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars was the bad attitude of various staff members. The rude ticket pick up staff, aggressively rude security guards and the sales person in the gift shop. I get it, it's a free day and it's more crowded than usual. But being rude is not something you expect from every employee you encounter. The restrooms were plentiful and clean. I don't understand how anyone can rate this museum anything less than 4 stars? Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a genius. The location is also great which makes use of the old Roman wall. The neighborhood is also Picasso's old neighborhood when he lived in Barcelona. How fitting that a museum dedicated to such a great artist is located in the neighborhood where he believed he was born as an artist. He actually was born in the city of Malaga, but sprouted his wings as an artist in Barcelona. The building were he lived is actually about a 2 minute walk from the museum, and the bar where he and his friends hung out at, the Four Cats, is about a 4 minute walk away from the museum. The collection takes you through a life time evolution as an artist which I believe was an amazing process. I knew it was going to be hot in July in Barcelona, therefore, I purchased tickets in advance for a guided tour so that I would not have to wait in the heat. When I met my guide, Mireia de Lasaosa Rosicart, I was very excited because she was an excellent presenter who really was truly excited about guiding our group through the life of Picasso. I purchased the multi museum pass for Barcelona that allowed me to skip the line and I was glad that I did because by the time I left, the museum was very crowded. I've never seen such a collection! This museum is home to hundreds of Picassos, from his earliest, most realistic stuff to the stuff he probably did on his death bed. It's really neat to see how Picasso's work changed throughout his life, and how he could take one scene and repaint it over and over and refine his craft. The museum is located on a back alley, in a series of old mansions. They offer a free day once a week, but you can't just show up and expect to be let into the museum, you have to reserve the free passes well in advance, just like any other ticket. The staff here was rather on the cold side, not very helpful with anything, and acted put off when we had to use the elevators to get around, and they wouldn't let us just get in and press the buttons ourselves, like we might break it. The floors were hard to get around on with a wheelchair, since a lot of them were cobblestone floors. The gallery rooms seemed to be kind of thrown together. For example, they'd have priceless masterpieces displayed in a case, the walls painted up with some of the most ornate details for a room ever, then an extension cord and a power strip hanging from the ceiling. There'd be rooms where you just wonder why the museum hung the art like that. The gift shop was ridiculously overpriced, especially considering that the gift shop across the street has nearly the same stuff in it for a fraction of the price. The temporary exhibit was on Picasso's jewelry, which a lot of it was sort of made to look like nipples. That was cool. read more

We were not planning to miss visiting the Museu Picasso which houses one of the most extensive collections of artworks by artist Pablo Picasso. With over four thousand artistic works exhibited by the painter, this museum has an extensive amount of his collections of works. The museum is enclosed in medieval palaces which is located La Ribera neighborhood. I was somewhat astonished on the artist early works and how he progressed later into his years into entirely different direction. The museum also had the artist sketches on paper. I've seen numerous Pablo Picasso exhibitions in permanent and temporary collections around the world. The Museu Picasso (Picasso Museum) was among the least interesting exhibits of Picasso art I've seen. Even worse, there was a strictly-enforced, weird-out-dated policy of no pictures that helps keep the disappointment of the museum a secret from Instagram, Facebook, and Yelp. Picasso was a prolific genius and promoter that spent some important years in Barcelona with important relationships with many Catalans. The museum shows portions of its collection that highlight some of that connection with Catalonia as well as earlier works. Two of the most famous early pieces of his career are housed at the museum: The First Communion (1896) and Science and Charity (1897). When we visited, there were two special exhibits. One was about Pablo Picasso and publisher Gustavo Gili that focused on the documentary archive of the editor and the the two men's friendship. The other was writings and portraits between Picassso and Museu Picasso founder Jaume Sabartés. Throughout our self-guided audio tour through the busy galleries, I was reprimanded by security for trying to take a picture with my iPhone. I eventually gave up. They did this for everyone that was there the day we went; however, on the museum website, it says that it is ok for non-professional, but personal pictures to be taken. Purchased a tour that included visiting this fabulous museum. This is a must see in Barcelona. My guide provided nuggets of information: the tense relationship between Picasso and his father, the death of his youngest sister, what inspired Picasso, so many tragedies in his life. The suicide of a good friend that really affected him and the suicide of his second wife, Jacqueline after his death. The museum houses early works of Picasso from his apprenticeship and youth. I found his interpretation of Velazquez's Las Meninas dazzling. There are 57 pieces that shape his interpretation of that one work! The one work I wanted to see was Lady with Mantilla. Weirdly enough she is temporarily housed in MOMA in NYC. I bought a print of it to console myself. There is an amazing exhibition showing now and moving from room to room really gives you an intimate portrait of Picasso. The Museum itself is rich and rooms crafted in marble. One room that housed his pottery had a gorgeous neo- classical design. There is also a wonderful gift shop where you can purchase everything from magnets, to posters to a replica of the striped shirt Picasso loved to wear. Many of the paintings and sketches are from his youth. It's very interesting to see how he progressed from a fine artist painter to abstract. The museum also does a great job pairing other artists paintings with Picasso to show how he was influenced by them and recreated their work in his own style. The museum has work from his early years and then skips to the 60's so there is a big gap in his work. Another interesting presentation is the hanging of several of the same paintings next to each other with different variations. This shows you his creative process whether or not you like his work. So stopped through this museum on our last day in Barcelona. Im not the artsy person but figured I can't come to this city and not see his art. The museum itself is very clean. There are plenty of employees around to ask questions and help guide you through. The museum has free lockers which helped us out a lot since we had several bags. You only need .50 or 1 euro to secure the key and then you get it back when you put the key into the lock. The art itself is beautiful. I was surprised that not all of his work was encased with glass. They allow you to take pictures and the you move through the museum as he did with his art. His later work is yours the end of the tour. You can purchase a guided tour through what looks like a cell phone for 5 euros. Also it's free after 6 but you need to "purchase" it ahead of time. read more

The collection is fine and what is expected. My whole experience was ruined by the security guards. When I went to retrieve my belongings from the locker that they provided, I made a mistake by opening the wrong locker which was next to mine. After making several failed attempts in entering the combination number, a female security guard appeared and hit me really hard on my arm and started screaming at me for my mistake. I apologized profusely and explained that my locker was the one next to it and I would like to open it and be on my way. She continued to scream at me and refused to let me open my own locker, she even threatened to call the police. She told me to return at 7pm (it was 2pm at the time) when all of the lockers would be opened and I could then claim my belongings. Luckily, I went with a friend and she opened the locker for me and fetched my belongings. While I was watching my friend, I saw that the same woman and other security guards were harassing other visitors who also made the same mistake as mine. It's appalling that they would treat visitors in such a horrid manner. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

I easily get bored with museums and have a 2 hour time limit before having museum burnout syndrome, but Museu Picasso held my interest. Maybe the 2 cups of cafe con leche beforehand helped too? Picasso was born in 1887 in Malaga, moved to La Corunya where he started his training at the well known Llotja School of Fine Arts. I learned that his first significant work shown in exhibition was in Barcelona entitled "The First Communion" and he was only 15 years old. * Shoot, when I was 15, I was crushing on boys and hanging out at our school courtyard, hoping to make out with the said boys * This museum provides works and information during the formative years of Picasso before he moved to Paris in 1904. It really shows you his progress as a budding artist. This is where it ALL began. Needless to say, this museum is not to be missed! it was the only museum that was created while Picasso was still alive and displays key pieces during his early years when he was most involved with Barcelona up to his Blue Period and then back again in 1917 when he went back to town with the Russian Ballet. Located in the Barri Gotic neighborhood, just getting to the museum is already an adventure. Be sure to come early because the lines are sometimes insanely long (from what we've heard from our concierge) Admission is €10/person, plus €3 audioguide. If you're a lover of the arts, then the Museu Picasso is a must while visiting Barcelona. If you happen to have a Barcelona card, then you'll get a discount, which I'll also recommend you getting the audio guide. The Picasso museum is the only museum of its kind where the artist was still alive while in its conception. Pablo Picasso had a lot of say as to which pieces would be displayed in the museum bearing his name. Because of his life-long history with the city of Barcelona, the museum resides there. His widow and widow's daughter have also donated pieces since his death. My favorite piece here was his take on Valasquez's Las Meninas which hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. He produced a room full of pieces related to Las Meninas, which was quite fascinating. Picasso was known to spend hours in the Prado studying the great works of the masters. You can see that his style changed over his lifetime. He was able to paint like the academics at the age of 13! His style constantly changed as he came into contact with other artists, particularly those he met in Paris after the turn of the century. After arriving in Barcelona (via Train from Girona) and checking into our Hotel, the first thing Gayle wanted to do was visit the Museu Picasso. I was game, as I was still feeling the amazement after seeing Guernica Painting a few weeks earlier at the Reina Sofia in Madrid. Plus, this place is arguably the best collection in Spain of Picasso's work. And since he spent is formative years (14-21) in Barcelona, it's the best collection of his early works anywhere. I was initially disappointed that the Museu Picasso is a bit short of his works during the time of the Spanish Civil War. In some ways that's not surprising as Picasso vowed to never again set foot in Spain while Franco was alive. And since he died before that, Pablo never saw the great exhibit that his personal secretary (Jaume Sarbetes) spent years putting together (with Picasso's long distance help). This handsome building and displays of Picasso's early years were well worth the price of admission. It's all scattered through several palatial room over 2 floors. Gayle would tell you that I gravitated too fast to the "nudes" such as the "Dos Figuras y Un Gato" piece, but I was intrigued throughout, especially regarding some of his childhood works and the Blue Period. As with other key Spanish museums, photography is frowned upon, backpacks need to go in the Locker, and the gift shop offers lots of options. There was a line to get in, but it moved quickly. Museu Picasso was also one of the few places where my credit card didn't work and which the staff wasn't very nice about it. They warn you about credit card fraud in Barcelona, but in this case it was apparently just a fluke with their machine. read more

If this happens to you, don't be timid or scared - just walk right through and you will be welcomed with kindness and open arms. It is so worth it, and you will basically have the museum to yourself. I remember learning about in school, however, I only knew a few select paintings from him. I knew he was super famous, with some of his pieces selling for the highest amount, so when I found out he had a whole museum dedicated to his work, I had to visit. Do yourself a favor. When you go here, keep mental track of Picasso's birth year (1881). Whenever you encounter a painting, you'll say to yourself, "Yes, that looks like an incredible painting by a full-grown adult." Then do the math and realize that Picasso was painting circles around the majority of painters by the time he was just a teenager. His work is totally incredible for someone so young. The museum is presented chronologically. See him copying old masters before entering his blue period and coming out the other end with his wild cubist fantasies. The real stunner is the museum's giant collection of paintings related to Las Meninas. Make sure you study a picture of the original painting or add a screen shot to your phone. Picasso deconstructs Las Meninas over and over again, building it back up into something original, yet familiar. It's fascinating to see him tackle each character in the painting, then put them all together in a Guernica-esque explosion. I went on a Thursday afternoon in April and there was no wait to get in (thankfully). It does kinda suck they won't let you take pictures, but I suppose that keeps the crowds moving and prevents everyone from spending hours taking selfies with masterpieces. The Picasso Museum is by no means complete, but it's a very good snapshot of one of the world's greatest artists. Note: If you have a larger bag, you'll be forced to store it in a locker. Ah, Picasso. That's usually my response when asked for my opinion of a piece of Picasso art. "Ah, Picasso". Probably because I didn't know what I was looking at and didn't bother reading the caption beside it to make me sound intelligent. You have to say it with a level of detached bemusement for maximum credibility. Otherwise you just stand there like I did, looking befuddled and wondering where I was going to get my next tapa. I made an online reservation for Jamie W. and me to come here on a Friday afternoon because I had been forewarned that queues form and don't let up. By the time we made our way through the labyrinth of Barcelona's La Ribera neighborhood, we came without incident upon the medieval building complex that houses the collection. It dates back to the 13th century and lends an intimate level of historical gravitas to an essential collection. Most of the over 4,000 pieces originate during the artist's early career from 1890 when he would have been nine to 1917 when he was 26. There is only one major series of work displayed here that comes from his much later period, 1957's Las Meninas, a recreation of Diego Velázquez's painting of the same name. These paintings reflect his more familiar abstract visual style (photo: http://bit.ly/2A8a5F5), while his more formative years are marked by a more traditional approach that could have been attributable to any number of artists (photo). That's probably the reason why I wasn't overly enthralled by the collection and why the medieval architecture of five interconnected palaces overshadowed the art itself. This museum is priceless settled in a beautiful Mediterranean villa, with airy hallways, brick walls, gorgeous majestic windows, and nestled on all majestically adorned are Picasso's creations. My favorite of the collection were his renderings pencil sketches of a sculpturer and his model who fell in love with each other and the erotic drawings of their relationship are captured oh so detailed by Picasso. Museum also has an electic store with different items showcasing beautiful memorabilias from his collection. Take the L2 line to Jemone metro stop and get lost in the cobblestone streets full of artisanal botiques which will lead you to this Gem of a place!! read more

This was an awesome learning experience. I've been to a Picasso special exhibit in Los Angeles but it was very interesting to learn more about Picasso in his birthplace of Barcelona. The audio guides were very helpful and informative. I really liked the unique look of this museum. Lots of stonework. The only thing was, there were a few shots where the tiles were uneven, so watch your step. I definitely recommend this museum. Purchase tickets online. Unfortunately since the wifi isn't available, the mobile checkin is not reliable. There is a separate window where they'll look up your name. Its easier to print it out in advance if possible. The only odd process flow is that We had to go in the opposite direction to pick up our audio guides and then go back to enter. read more
