I was surprised to discover well after Jamie W and I came here that this massive complex was built…read morearound the turn of the millennium. Given the retro vibe of the swooping, skeletal design of the entire layout, I would've guessed it was designed in the middle of the 20th century when the Jetsons ruled the Saturday morning airwaves. Designed by local architect Santiago Calatrava, it was actually built over a 13-year period between 1996 and 2009. We knew the City of Arts & Sciences was a must-visit in Valencia, and we took a local bus to disembark at the most visited component, L'Oceanogràfic (Photo 7). It's Europe's largest aquarium, and by far, we spent most of our time here (review: https://yelp.to/WiK7NyEDnr). Our experience with the other key structures basically consisted of strolling the expansive grounds and appreciating the sophistication of Calatrava's organic design. We walked the length of the science museum, Museu de les Ciències (Photo 2) which was followed by a look at the eye-shaped L'Hemisfèric, which houses a planetarium and an IMAX theatre (Photo 3). On the opposite side of the reflecting pool was El Umbracle, an elevated open-air garden (Photo 10). We ended our urban hike at the striking opera house, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (Photo 9). One man's unique vision of Valancia's future. RELATED - Exploring Valencia? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/LLaHiolznn

Beautiful architecture. Worth visiting for this alone. I happened to be visiting during a Leonardo…read moreDaVinci exhibit. Just incredible the breadth and depth they went into. Very informative. I really appreciate the cleanliness of the building, the attention to detail within each exhibit, and most notably, the interactive experiences. Each exhibit I visited had multiple interactive opportunities to help engage the audience. Great way to capture the attention of young and old alike; not just walking through looking and reading copious amounts of explanations on the art presented. One star off because some of the exhibits felt disjointed between one another, signage could be better.

The family at AtlasAdventured highly recommends visiting here!…read moreWe visited the Museum of Sciences in Valencia, Spain in July of 2023. This is definitely a must see if you are visiting Valencia! We purchased our tickets inside the museum the day before. You can purchase tickets the same day, but we wanted to ensure we had a spot for our 4 year old daughter to participate in the "Scientist for a Day" and the 3D Dinosaur show. Our general admission tickets into the Science museum were 8 Euros, the Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D show at L'Hemisferic was 4 euros (because we bundled the tickets), and the Scientist for a Day tickets were 3.50 euros (but you need to purchase a general admission ticket in order to participate in this event). Great customer service from the staff at the ticket desk. Super friendly and helpful, and gave us great recommendations on bundling the tickets and what would be best for our daughter. Our family had the best day here. There is something for everyone, and the majority of exhibits are hands on! Next time we visit Valencia, we will gladly be coming back here! It's affordable, fun for all ages, and a great break from the heat!

Perfect aquarium to spend half a day exploring. The exhibit of this time is all kinds of tortoises…read moreand turtles. The dolphin show was very nice and they are so talented and well trained. The show is not in English at all but there are some parts from the big screen of the show with subtitles in English. The Beluga Whales are beautiful and the penguins are a must see as well. There are plenty of school children on field trips so go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds during the week. I would expect the weekends to be very crowded. I think the value of the admission is good because the aquarium is so big and beautiful.

Now Jamie and I have been to world-class aquariums from Okinawa (review: https://yelp.to/JmZt0OKoJh) to Monterey (review: https://yelp.to/Zl6LM5VwU2), and this one is among the better ones we've visited, for sure. Take, for example, the Shark Tunnel billed as Europe's longest underwater tunnel (Photo 8). Sharks, rays, tortoises, and the more alpha fish swim above and all around you. It was definitely a unique feature, and so was the college campus approach to the entire operation. Instead of the usual claustrophobic space aquariums provide visitors, Oceanografic offers separate pavilions to reflect different ecosystems like the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Mediterranean. Spanning 110,000 square meters, It allows them to spread out the marine life. Birds and reptiles get their own outdoor compounds. The layout and architecture are compatible with the rest of the retro-futuristic City of Arts & Sciences complex. In fact, this worked well as an introduction to the expansive complex for us as we headed northward through Jardí del Túria. We didn't plan on coming here, which meant we waited in line for a half-hour before paying 39.45€ for each of us to enter. A bit steep but hey, if you like live sushi.. RELATED - Exploring Valencia?
