But great for fam picnics and social thingies. Whether you want to come here to work out, with the amazing walking tracks with low impact asphalt and gravel, or enjoy the breath-taking beauty for a picnic or BBQ... This place will change your life. A true escape from everyday corporate life and post-industrial alienation. It simply makes people happy. People say hi and seem relaxed here. I am lucky enough to live within walking distance to here again (and yes, I moved to my current address FOR this park) - and, for those of us who value more than money, shopping centres and the fake, this place is revolutionary. Enjoy, my similarly minded friends - it will change your lives.

It has a modest playground with two swings and a few springy chairs for little kids. The grass area in this park is flat and generally well taken care of by the council. The main people who come here are dog walkers or people who live in the area nearby. It connects Lakewood Estate with the Bunnett Road and many people pass through to get to the lake within Lakewood. I tend to come here when I want to chuck a ball around or play soccer. There are a couple of trees that are great for goals and as traffic through the park is fairly minimal it is a good place to have a decent kick. There is plenty of shade in the park as well as some good sunny spots. If you are going on the swings or the playground you will want to wear sunscreen or a hat because it gets pretty hot there.

Fitzroy Gardens is much bigger and full of interesting things to see and do, but if you just want a nice patch of grass and some shade to chill under with easy access to the CBD, Treasury Gardens has got you covered. The people watching here is second to none. With the Treasury building (and Victoria's registry office) next door, you're bound to see an eclectic array of bridal parties walking through the gardens for a photo on weekends. On weekdays, with Collins Place just a few doors down, I like to grab a salad or rice paper roll and head over with a blanket and a book to enjoy some quiet time amongst the hustle and bustle. You won't find kids and dogs here, this is the office worker oasis.

Another wedding hot spot in Melbourne City, and for the all the right reasons too. A great trek for riding bikes is also included; and also the ducks pond towards Parliament House is aesthetically beautiful and pleasing. Love the flowers and lily pads there. A great spot to read a book; take it all in; do nothing; meditate and hug your partner if you have one - all in addition to grabbing something to eat in nearby Collins Street; eat it here or come prepared for a picnic with a group of friends and work colleagues. Those of us living in Melbourne are grateful to have an abundance of parks to enjoy in the city and the city fringe; and Treasury Gardens is one of those parks. Although its quite small; no need to worry because as you walk away from the city; cross a busy road and you have landed yourself into another oasis called Fitzroy Gardens. Just be careful as the traffic gets quite heavy in this area.

There was a fairly large clubhouse too, which made sense when I saw a sign detailing what sporting clubs operate at the Reserve. The playground here is quite popular with three or four carloads of kids turning up to play on it in the space of only fifteen minutes. I thought this was pretty strange seeing as how the playground is quite small. It does have two swings though and they were in constant demand. There were some batting cages as well - totally cool. I used to practice here when I played softball a few years ago. As long as you have someone to throw a ball for you, you can hit it with a bat as hard as you like and the metal cage will catch it for you - they are awesome. There wasn't really any well-defined walking track, but the grass is short so you can just meander your own way across the Reserve. It was quite nice, but more enjoyable for kids or people coming down to play sport. For the wanderer like me, it was a little bit boring.

Another popular element of the Peanut Farm Reserve is the "Veg Out" Community Gardens that is located just across the road at the former St Kilda Bowling Club. The gardens are primarily rented by residents of apartments in the area and offer local residents the opportunity to express themselves in a small plot of soil, which results in many colourful artistic displays. It seems to have gained in popularity over the years so if you're coming on a weekend, prepare to arrive super early. I came at 8am on a Saturday, quite pleased with myself at waking up so early and the carpark was entirely full. It does detract from the experience a little bit but I'll just have to learn to share. Returning on a weekday was completely different. Barely any people on the track and I thoroughly enjoyed my walk up those steps! The 1000 steps don't take too long to complete and the hardest part is that last 5-10 minutes where the steps get bigger. Thankfully, there are plenty of rest stops and people are generally courteous about moving out of the way if your smashing out a workout without needing a rest. I love the sound of water running, kookaburras laughing and the different birds rustling around in the trees. The only slight inconvenience is the parking situation at peak times and high volume of people passing through.

In case anybody wonders (and people always do), there are actually less than 1000 steps. But the walk uphill before the actual stairway makes up for the shortage of steps of the stairway. Before you start, there is a sign that tells you to leave your water bottle and other belongings. As long as you know not to litter, you can disregard that sign. I'd recommend going up the stairs and then taking the other non-stair path back down. But then everybody has their own preferences. Plenty of shade, so you won't be baking in the sun. On the other hand, you can't actually see your progress since all you'll see are more and more stairs. There are certain parts that are leveled, and you'll see a few benches available to sit. Most people we encounter along this trail seem to be at least somewhat fit. The most resilient hikers end up being the older individuals. Overall, it's a great place to get a good exercise. You'll be compelled to finish the trip the moment you start.
