Great place to hang out and grab a couple cold ones, have a big fat juicy burger, watch some rugby or football and have a chat w/ the bar men and regulars. Murphy's is a bit of an expat cliche located right by the Hbf and all. But it actually is run by Irish owners, and they keep up with a set of typical bar offerings like pub-quiz (trivia), karaoke, live music and sport-showings that really work out. Beers are pricy here, but selection of alcohol's not half bad, and long drinks/wines/whiskeys are quite cheap considering. The food's also real decent pub food with a selection of pretty kick-ass burgers, Irish stew, shepherd's pie and bake potatoes...etc. The most finger licking dish has gotta be the chili nachos though, can't stop once you start. read more

Ah... good ol' Murphys. To be honest, this is where all the soldiers stationed in Mannheim went when they wanted to get out and mingle with the 'locals'. LoL. All in all its not a horrible place... it is not a dive by any means. The decor is happy, its well lit for a bar, there is always music. The drinks are good if pricey. Frankly, it always reminds me of someplace you would see in Friends. The problem is that this is where all the Americans come... so its crowded. Always. Its hard to find a seat, even harder to get to the bar to get a drink, and of course then you come back to find that someone has taken your seat. Its loud and everybody speaks English. The worse part has nothing to do with the bar... its all the pretentious idiots that come back to base and say what a culturally expanding experience it is. Asshats. Did you have a conversation in German? No? Because nobody there speaks German and you couldn't hear them anyways if they did. There are SO MANY fantastic places to go in Mannheim if only you would walk a few blocks from the Strass. read more

This is a small place and seating will be tight. We were there on Trivia night which was also the night of Champions League game (I don't recall who played). The place was pretty packed and the kitchen was in the weeds. So much so that they were telling us to expect 45-60 minutes for burgers. Between the trivia and game the time passed fast enough and the food was OK for pub fare. I think my beer swilling colleagues found enough variety to keep them happy, but beer isn't my thing so I stuck to soft drinks. One big caution if you're there when it's going to be crowded, there are backless chairs floating around the place. If you are going to be sitting for 15-20 minutes not a big deal. But if your stay is going to exceed an hour, check the seating situation first. I'll tell you two hours on one of these wasn't a pleasant experience. You've been warned. Three stars for pub quality food, decent atmosphere, providing you get a decent seat. read more
