Whenever we are in Victoria (infrequently), we always stop by Murchie's. My son loves their tea. And it's just a fun store.

For Christmas we had to stay an extra day in Victoria due to cancelled ferries to Vancouver. Many…read moreof the restaurants nearby were all booked up and so we went searching for some delicious food to bring back to our hotel...lucky for us Junoon was open! After seeing such positive reviews on Google Business Profile and looking over their expensive menu (that also had photos) we drove to their store to pay place an order. Upon arriving, we realize that they didn't have in dining seating... And was more set up for pickup and delivery options. This was fine since we're looking to have takeaway in anyways. The owner was very kind and took her order which took about 35 minutes for them to prepare. The highlights for me were the butter chicken samosas and their Jarred desserts which were delicious! Their packaging was great and everything that we ordered was exceptional, and they gave healthy portions. I highly recommend going to June if you're looking for a little higher scale take away option for Indian food and for sure make sure to try their dessert options.. the gulab cheesecake was my favorite.

Excellent service provided by the dasher who delivered our food as well. The food, including Amritsari kulcha, butter paneer and naans, arrived piping hot and exceeded our expectations. The luscious butter paneer and delightful pickled onion were standout touches. If you crave authentic and delicious Indian cuisine delivered to your doorstep, this place comes highly recommended!

We stopped by this small Filipino bakery on our recent trip to Victoria to pick up some baked goods…read morefor dessert. Even though it was the middle of winter and it was near closing, there was still a good number of people inside buying buns and not all of them seemed to be tourists like us. We ended up getting a number of different items: Custard Ball ($2.99) - We warmed this up in a toaster oven, giving a bit of the crust on the exterior edges of the donut, especially on the top where the powdered sugar turns into an almost crème brulee-like topping. The crumb is very fluffy fried and is filled with a sweetened vanilla custard. (4/5) Ube Custard Ball ($2.99) - This has the same donut dough base as the normal custard ball, but is filled with a dark purple ube cream. It's sweet and earthy, albeit not necessarily the most heavily ube flavored. (4/5) Original Ube Ensaymada ($2.99) - This bun, extremely fluffy and nice to eat, has an interesting spiral pattern construction at least when viewed from the bottom, but it's not apparent inside the bun. The bun is sweet and again there's not too much ube flavor. If it wasn't purple I'm not sure I could identify it as ube in flavor. (4/5) Classic Pandesal ($0.99) - Lightly sweet, great soft texture. It's pandesal, not too much else to say. (4/5) Overall the baked goods Friends & Family Bake sells are pretty good. Most of the items are soft, fluffy and sweet, perfect for breakfast or a dessert.

You can take your baking to go or eat them on the spot, you should definitely have something on the spot where they can warm it up for you also.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE Calling Hawaiian ex-pats and visitors…read more- the ahi poke is decent (better than some of the competition in town) and the service is good - just ask for the bowl to be made the way we make it back in Hawaii :) === 2. FOOD Review based solely on the poke bowls: it's good - the best value seems to be building your own bowl ($14 for a single scoop of poke, $17 for two scoops, etc.) where you get five sides to go with it. So it's not super authentic (I haven't come across any on the continental mainland), and the ahi serving is a little small compared to back home, but the flavour of the fish is good :) Rice: you can't get hapa here, but you can ask for white rice on one half of the bowl and brown rice in the other half. If you're a fan of or just miss the taste of furikake, be sure to ask the server to put the furikake on the rice BEFORE they put anything on it :) Fish: the standards (shoyu / spicy ahi) are good. They have some different flavours (not ever seen at Foodland or otherwise in the 808 :) ) ...but that seems to be normal on the mainland. Some of them (like the salmon) taste alright. Toppings: there are a lot, many of which we don't get back home and they are good I suppose for the uninitiated. You get five of them when building your own bowl - from egg to seaweed, to edamame, and more. === 3. SERVICE Overall, it's good - a fellow named 'T' seems to run this place; he's the best at service and can reveal the origin story of the joint (memorable culinary experiences in Hawaii). The ladies working here are nice, but need closer direction - and sometimes we find they give less fish/toppings that 'T'. Overall - they have all been great. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's the Hillside Centre food court - so you have a lot of space for groups of any size, with or without baby strollers or wheelchairs to dine in a bright, open, relatively-modern decor. Parking is a breeze too, given the spacious parking lot outside for the mall.

Stopped at the food court for lunch and this looked the most appealing. Initially decided on the 1…read moreprotein poké bowl but changed my mind to get a Hawaiian Plate instead for an additional $3, since I'd get more variety and slightly more food. The person helping me behind the counter was great--patiently explained all the options I had before each part of the meal! You get a choice of different rices or salad, one hot protein, one poké, one side, and unlimited sauces and toppings. Lots of options to choose from, which is nice. I opted for white rice (along with the furikake that was offered), Maui ribs, shoyu salmon poké, and marinated cucumber for my side. I also got offered a choice of drink for an additional $2 only, so I got the Hawaiian iced tea. Food tastes decent--not the best poké or ribs I've ever had, but it's fine. To be honest, this was some of the better mall food court food I've had! The poké portion was a bit smaller than I expected, but the ribs were a larger portion than I expected (3 big long pieces!), so it all evens out. There was a lot of rice, so I ended up having about 1/4 of it left over. The drink was okay--a bit on the sweet side, but I tasted some of the tea. Think it was passion fruit mango flavor. I ate around 1 PM on a weekday, so while the food court was busy, getting a seat was pretty easy. Ambiance here is like any other mall food court. Definitely will come back if I need a quick meal in the mall.

My daughter and I stepped into the store yesterday (Sunday afternoon Nov 3, 2019) with the intent…read moreto exchange a gift certificate for a personal size panago pizza of her choice. She earned the certificate through the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) Summer Reading Club. For the past 2 or more years, she has had a very positive experience of exchanging a personal pizza of her choice at other franchise outlets (1110 McKenzie Ave and 800 Kelly Rd) through this wonderful giving-back-to-community program that Panago Pizza have with GVPL. However this was not to be at this 3690 Shelbourne Street store. The first response the lady at the counter said was to ask my daughter if she wants cheese or another pizza that I can't recall (likely ham + pineapple). I told her that we have had the ability to choose in the past in other stores (and the gift certificate does not restrict the pizza type but only the size to personal) but she was insinuating that this is free to us and at their cost and so it's their call to decide which pizzas they want to give. She also suggested that we were exchanging for too many free pizzas as she misunderstood me when I gave her instances when my daughter was able to choose the pizza of her choice in previous years in the above 2 other mentioned franchise outlets. She was also very rude by trying to circumvent my presence and asking my daughter directly which one of the 2 pizzas she wants. Sensing that this is not right, I told her sternly that I am my daughter's guardian and parent and she should be speaking to me and addressing me and my concerns directly. I asked to speak to her manager and a guy came to the counter (he didn't identify himself so he could be the franchisee or her supervisor) but it was clear he wasn't going to apologise or get the lady to apologise. He made no effort to damage control what the lady at the counter had done and so I believe she must be acting on his instructions to restrict only the cheapest pizzas to customers with gift certificates. So we left for the 1110 McKenzie Ave outlet where my daughter didn't have any issue selecting the personal pizza of her choice. I will not recommend anyone to this outlet based on their business ethics but please continue to support Panago Pizza in their other franchisee outlets.
