I was in town for a work meeting and was introduced to this restaurant by a colleague. It was close…read moreto our hotel, and a quick walk. It has a comfortable ambience, where it feels intimate and quite cozy. I did not have anything to drink except water, but they have plenty of offerings for those who want it. I had been flying non stop from the USA so I was avoiding alcohol for a good night's sleep. Our appetizer was the single portion Blinis. They come with finely diced onions, sour cream, and roe that looks so fine it is impossible to say how tiny they are. The Blini itself could have been eaten alone, but when you put it all together it was magnificent! All of us then had the fish of the day, the pike perch with a beurre blanc sauce and potato pancake- pickled whole mustard seeds and a fennel salad. This dish was exquisite. I cannot remember a time when I saw a combination of items I have never had, plated beautifully, and also just absolutely delicious. The Fennel and mustard seeds were a beautiful counterbalance to the fish and potato pancake underneath- which made sure it was crispy by sitting above the beurre blanc. Our server was Iida, (pronouned EE-dah) and was very attentive, professional, and then when we thought our meal was going to end they asked about dessert. This was also a show stopper. Yuzu ice cream with fresh blueberries, blueberry granita, and blueberry jam. It was also one of the most finely plated dishes I have ever seen. I regret not taking a photo of the blini, but I will post the perch and the dessert. Stunning to look at and remember. Thank you to Iida and the team here at Ravintola Wolkoff. My hope is that I am back in Lappeenranta again sometime and can come support this business again! Support small business owners!

My friend and I had a late supper. My friend had yhe chefs menu and I had the brewhouse menu…read more My apetizer was the tomato, parma ham and goat cheese bruchetta. A nice combination, tomatoes two ways, oven roasted with dried basil and a slightly sweet tomato chutney paired with a whipped goat cheese and served with basil and watercress. Could have done without the watercress, but the flavours worked. My main, pam seared rainbow trout with pea and parmesan risotto. Topped with tender broccoli, a single asparagus and a random carrot. The risotto was a tad bland, it could have done with a bit more salt and some balck pepper. The trout had crispy skin and wasn't too dry, the seasoning on point. But as I ate my way trough the dish I was constantly asking myself why a pea risotto? To my mind I would have paired it with a lemon risotto and served it with peas on the side. The carrot was perhaps misplaced. Don't get me wrong the dish was passable but not perfect. The dessert. A deconstructed carrot cake, served with caramelised chocolate mousse,, dolopps of sweetened carrot puree, walnut creamcheese and a tender carrot cooked in a cinnamon flavoured sugar syrup. All toppd with a sugary crumble. Too my mind the cake was too dence and the chocolate component didn't add anything. All in all a pleasant experience, not perfect but well worth a visit. 8/13. My friends apetizer, snailes with parmesan and garlic-lemon butter served with butter toasted bread. Perhaps a somewhat skimpy portion size (6 snailes) but the flavours worked together. All served with one single slice of bread, toasted in butter but two slices would have have been prefered to enjoy the garlic-lemon butter. My friends main, the meat was a tad overdone (asked for medium, got a something closer to well done). But the meat was a bit too salty. The potatoes was smooth with a good flavour. The vegetables was a nice companion and the red wine sauce brought it all together. My friends dessert, the panncotta with strawberries and lime. The pannacotta was creamy but not too sweet and the strawberry jelly had a nice but similar to the matinated strawberries didn't bring anything too the dish. Perhaps the dish would have benefitted from a swap from strawberries to blueberries? My friends verdict, good location. Good but not perfect food. Pleasant and fast service. 9/13.
