My mother has severe cognitive and physical limitations stemming from a traumatic brain injury in 2010. She resided in this facility from 2010 to 2011 and again from 2015 to 2020.
Care was acceptable during her first admission, although she frequently had to wait for LONG periods of time when she called for assistance or to have her brief changed.
During her second admission, the facility was frankly negligent. They had her valid power of attorney on file and valid contact information for 2 adult children (one of whom was listed as a contact on her facility 'face sheet') yet they asked a guardianship agency to purse court-appointed guardianship without speaking with the adult children and failed to provide to the guardianship agency the contact information for the adult children. This is a flagrant violation of violation of Indiana Code Title 29. Probate § 29-3-6-1, which requires that the adult children be provided notice of the guardianship proceeding. When the children, who live out of state, subsequently became aware, the administrator, Frank Bensema, refused to discuss the matter with us, stating that the guardianship stripped us of all legal rights.
Fast forward June 2020. My mother had a severe femur fracture (upper leg bone) that required surgical stabilization and placement of a steel plate. She was hospitalized for 8 days. Again, administrator Frank Bensema, would not respond to requests from either the court-appointed guardian or the family for information regarding the incident. Mind you, my mother is too weak and uncoordinated to sit up in bed or to roll over without assistance. Draw your own conclusion.
I incurred the legal costs for to become her successor guardian, which was approved by the court. My mother was transferred from the hospital to Miller's Merry Manor in Hobart, and they have been very good to her.
I wouldn't recommend the facility to ANYONE, especially with an administration who fails to communicate with family members when adverse events occur. read more
